#1. Power Steering leaks & engine over-rev - from Jonathan Caldito
Top
Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 16:25:16 -0400 From: "Jonathan Caldito" <jonnym3@hotmail.com> Subject: Power Steering leaks & engine over-rev POWER STEERING LEAKS: Common leaks leaks on the power steering lines are the intake manifold hose (reservoir to the pump) and the cooler coil line (pump to the reservoir) the clamps are the main cause but I HIGHLY recommend replace the hose that is leaking as well. I've seen guys replacing ONLY the clamps on warranty and customer pay vehicles at the service dept. and days/weeks later, car comes back again with the same complaint with a pissed off customer. This isn't only for the E36 but on the E39, and E38. If you need specific direction/parts list for the power steering leaks, feel free to email me since I've done them about a couple dozen of times. I must mind you though that doing them on the ground is a PITA (messy) than standing up. ENGINE OVER-REV: If you over-revved your engine, obviouly due to a mis-shift, and felt like you were running on 3 cylinders, then you're on a fail safe mode. If you shut off the engine and start it back up and runs fine and idle smooth, then most likely you got lucky. This happened to me a couple years back but of course it left a 8160rpm record on my engine speed detection feature on the DME (MS41.2) and lost my drivetrain warranty. I still had good compression, had a 250bhp on the dyno, and obtained a 14.161 on the 1/4. If the engine idles rough after shuting the engine down, then you have bent the valves and looking at a high cost repair and labor. Mr. J. Powell spent a couple a grand I believe on his E30 but that price could be 2x as much or more on a S52B32 engine providing the pistons are ok. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

I've had the driver's seat cover off, and it's leather >(what the heck is "leatherette" anyway?). Leatherette is standard upholstery on base E46s. It looks like leather but it is not the real thing. If BMW offered $500 to downgrade, they got away with it cheap since it cost twice as much to upgrade to leather from leatherette. #4. suspension... - from Kit Wetzler

Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 14:22:51 -0700 From: "Kit Wetzler" <kitwetzler@mindspring.com> Subject: suspension... > Version 4.0: H&R springs + Koni shocks + UUC sway bars + TC Kline camber > plates + Ground Control rear shock mounts + TC Kline aluminum monoball > rear trailing arm bushings Short of the UUC sway bars (I have stock) and Kmac instead of TC Kline camber plates, I had this exact suspension. I thought that it was alright, but not great. The H&R springs lower the car to the point where I didn't have enough suspension travel. The H&R coilovers are $1700. They're expensive. They ride so much better than the H&Rs and Konis that I'd *never* go back. My street car, with 255/40r17 kumhos, and a full interior, with about 230 at the rear wheels was turning lap times only 3 seconds slower than navid kahanghi's IP M3. That's with stock sway bars, too! And a nutty driver. ;) The H&R coilovers handle better and ride better than the H&Rs + konis. I really don't think that the H&R sports + konis are going to be any better than bilsteins. -kit 97 m3/4 01 cbr-0600 f4i

#6. paint haze problem - from Mdriver13@aol.com
Top
Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 19:25:50 EDT From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: paint haze problem To all, A quick paint question. Late last year got some water trapped under magnetic numbers from a brief rain during an autox. Well, it's hard to see but under the right light you can see a "haze" from, I guess, the water boiling away under the magnetic numbers from the sunshine. I've tried waxing it out, yesterday I tried Maguier's #1 swirl remover...no change! Anyone run into this and found a solution? Of course for all of you that are trackers and autoxers, I now would suggest removing any magnetic "stickers" on the car after a rain before the sun does its damage, unless there's an easy solution here. At the time it looked too complex but now I'm thinking it would be a worthwhile mod. Has anybody out there undertaken this or = know of somebody who has ? =20 Steve.

#9. How much for a 6 speed tranny? - from Luis Veras
Top
Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 20:13:45 -0400 From: "Luis Veras" <veras@tricom.net> Subject: How much for a 6 speed tranny? It's definite. I will have to get a new transmission. I'm considering an used 5 tranny being sold by a fellow list member, but I thought, what the heck, if I have to change it any way, I might make the jump and go for the 6 speed. Now, how much would it cost? Any online information? Also, what are the shift points for a 6 speed on an '96 M3? I'm sharked, so I get 7000 RPM. With my 5 speed I get 37 MPH in first, 62 MPH in 2nd, 93-95 MPH in 3rd, 120 MPH in 4th. On a 6 speed, how would this be? Thanks for your info!

Ronal makes several. I know the LV does ( http://www.ronalusa.com/wheels.html <http://www.ronalusa.com/wheels.html> ), but do not know specifically which others do. I ended using some cheaper wheels from MAK (the Excess) ( http://www.makwheels.com/) <http://www.makwheels.com/)> . Because of a mixup, I ended up buying a set of the LV wheels that I never used. They are brand new, still in the box. If you are ineterested, you can email me. Dave 98 m3/4
