You can tell b/c it _usually_ has small holes in it like a cheese grater. I think the reason for the holes is so that you don't stick to it like a normal vinyl seat. Mercedes and BMW (and probably others) use it on their entry level cars. On Thursday, May 17, 2001, at 02:24 PM, Jim Bassett wrote: > "leatherette"

#4. Koni Update - from David Hogg
Top
Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 22:57:31 -0700 From: "David Hogg" <springwood@blazenet.net> Subject: Koni Update Several listers requested a report after the Koni's were on, so here it is. To review, car is a stock-suspended M3/4 daily driver with X-brace and tower braces; 8.5" Fikse's with 245/40 Pilot Sports all around. SA Koni's were set to 2/3 turn from full soft front & rear. After 2 days with the Koni's on the car, here's my impression: * Ride feels a little firmer and a little jiggly, actually very much like the E46 M3 I drove recently, which isn't what you'd call harsh. Still quite comfortable. * Damping is much better * Cornering is better - didn't feel like it but when I looked at the speedo, whoopee! * Rear feels like it has less damping than the front. I will probably soften the fronts 1/3 of a turn from where they are now. * Maybe I'm imagining this, but seems as if it understeers a little less/oversteers a little more (it was pretty neutral to start with). Is this possible? Hope this is helpful for the Koni's-to-be out there! Dave Hogg

#5. Finally a GOOD Dealer Story - from Andrew E. Kalman

Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 21:07:53 -0700 From: "Andrew E. Kalman" <aek@pumpkininc.com> Subject: Finally a GOOD Dealer Story Hi All. After San Francisco BMW tried innumerable times to get me a "standard M3" replacement for the LWT's CF-covered center console (they're sickeningly expensive and warp in the heat, so I wanted to replace it with a stock part before it gets damaged), I gave up on them and went down to Peter Pan BMW in San Mateo. Well, the first one they ordered for me was wrong -- it had an extra cutout above the driver's window switch. I pointed that out, and Leo said he would call BMW and talk to someone there, 'cause there are so many different version listed on the fiche that it's unclear which is correct. Anyway, a few days later I get a call that the part is in, and sure enough, it seems they they got the right one (I'll put it in a few weeks from now). Only, it's twice (!) as expensive as the wrong part. Leo was a bit embarrassed (or felt sorry for me, with my two little girls riding the toy cars around in the parts department), and basically gave me the part at their cost (which was still more than the other part at their normal price). Saved me $100 or so. So, while their prices aren't as competitive as they should be (boy would I like to be a BMW dealer - ka-ching!), I've found them on this and other occasions to be friendly and helpful. -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. #7. illuminated shift knob - from Lee Conte
Top
Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 23:27:19 -0700 From: "Lee Conte" <leeconte@home.com> Subject: illuminated shift knob I have an illuminated shift knob in my 98 M3 coupe. I am wondering what the criteria are for when it lights up. I thought I saw it illuminate a few times when the interior light came on, i.e., when turning the car off, but then I made of point of noticing what happened when I got out the other night and it didn't seem to illuminate. Then, tonight, after starting the car I turned the dash light knob all the way up and the shift knob light (which was off) illuminated slightly, but then when I started driving it went out, no matter how the brightness knob was set. Later, a friend in the passenger seat mentioned that it seemed to come on when the car was in high revs. What's the deal? I wish it would just come on with the dash lights and be normal, I don't really care what it does when the engine revs high since chances are I'm not exactly sitting there looking down at my shift knob. I was bummed to see the e46 m3 has the oil temp gauge instead :) It's not like I drive for good gas mileage, but it's a really fun toy :) - reid > I remember seeing an article in the Roundel a few years (?) ago > explaining how to swap the stupid gas mileage gauge for the Euro M3 oil > temp gauge. Late last year got some water trapped under magnetic numbers from a brief rain during an autox. Well, it's hard to see but under the right light you can see a "haze" from, I guess, the water boiling away under the magnetic numbers from the sunshine. I've tried waxing it out, yesterday I tried Maguier's #1 swirl remover...no change! Anyone run into this and found a solution? Of course for all of you that are trackers and autoxers, I now would suggest removing any magnetic "stickers" on the car after a rain before the sun does its damage, unless there's an easy solution here. #10. Tires for 18's - from Lew Becker
Top
Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 00:41:02 -0700 From: "Lew Becker" <lmbeckercfls@earthlink.net> Subject: Tires for 18's I'm running 235/35x18's MXX3's on 8.5's that are just about ready to be replaced. The Tire Rack advises that 235/35x18's are almost impossible to find (most 235x18's are a 40 series -- too tall on 18's); they only have 2 Pilot Sports (no other brands) in stock, and with more on indefinite back order. I jumped on the only 4 245/35 P Zero's they had in stock (almost the same outside diameter as the stock 245/40x17's, with a cross section width only .2" wider than the 235's); but they only had and sent me 4 Directionals (which are only supposed to be run in front, as opposed to the Asymmetric that can be run all around or in the rear with the Directionals in front). They are now proposing to replace the P Zero's with Goodyear Eagle Fiorano/F1's (the stock tire on Ferrari's F50, 550, 355, and 360) at a very attractive price to make up for their initial mistake; but in the Tire Rack's comparison chart of various max performance tires, this one rated lowest in virtually all categories (Bridgestone SO2 PP's were #1 -- not available in the sizes I can use, not even the SO3's). Anyone have any experience with the Goodyears? Lew Becker
