This is really sad that a contributor and overall very knowledgeable guy would feel like he has to remove himself from the web because of the ranting and raving of some poseur who thinks because he bought the car he knows the intricacies of performance tuning. Jim could be pretty in-your-face with his posts, but he knows his stuff. I hope Suzy quickly boots anyone off this list that resorts to flame wars over something they know nothing about. This list is incredibly useful and I hope we all do what it takes to help it remain so. - peterg (glad I dropped off of the other lists a long time ago)

It makes the car look like it is riding on bicyle tires and the tires are way in and not near the fender (Maybe I am used to the look of the Fikse FM/10 with 245/40R17 as they fill the wheel well to a tee). Also the cars handles like crap with 225 all around. As for the comment for 235/40R18 fitting, I do not know.if they fit but, if you go to 19" rims a 235/35R19 is recomended by the tire rack. That combo would be the same diameter of the 235/40R18 so it should fit. On thing I was told was with a lowered car and the 235/35R19's the front fender cathes the top of the tire under some conditions, so this may become a problem with the 18's also. check out this tire calculator to help you out http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html The best set up is 245/35R18. The tire rack web site says they have this size. Bill P

#9. TC Kline trailing arm bushings - from Juan Carlos Bruce-Novoa
Top
Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 19:27:11 -0700 (PDT) From: Juan Carlos Bruce-Novoa <jbruce@stanford.edu> Subject: TC Kline trailing arm bushings They transmit a significant amount of road noise. If you want more details read on. I just got the M3 back from having my car tech inspected and having the thermostat housing and control arm bushings replaced. As I mentioned previously I went through the last set of bushings in 15k miles. I debated between installing another set of stock('96+) bushings with the Ground Control Delrin reinforcements or going for the the TC Kline monoball bushings. I ordered both and eventually decided to put on the TC Kline parts. Well, the rear end is now really solid. The car no longer takes a second to take a set in corners. It'll be interesting to see the difference on the track next week. In terms of harshness I don't think they are much different. However, many people (the techs at Dinan included) think I'm a glutton for punishment anyway with the coilovers. The bushings are definitely noisy. They don't bang over bumps but they just transmit constant road noise to be amplified by the rest of the chassis. Its like one of those wind noises that are so hard to track down in old cars. It's not so loud you could not hold a conversation over it but its just annoying. I can't blame anyone but myself, the possibility of such noise should have occurred to me after just having gone through 5 years of Mechanical Engineering education. Oh well, I guess I'll either get used to it, go crazy and switch back to stock bushings, or finally get motivated to re-do my stereo system. If anyone with a db meter is really interested in how much louder they are I'll be happy to let you take measurements. I need to find a dedicated E30 325is track car to end this insanity. #10. drove the new m3 - from Jonathan Evans
Top
Date: Sat, 19 May 2001 00:03:07 -0400 From: "Jonathan Evans" <jonathanevans@hotmail.com> Subject: drove the new m3 Just another data point for the group. On my way to lunch today I noticed a gray/silver 740 with decals driving the other direction. Then an X5, same decals, etc... You get the picture. Drive for the Cure, breast cancer fundraiser. So I drive by the dealership about a mile from work and hang out, talking to the folks there. I drove a 325iX when I asked for anything with a manual transmission. What a dog, a complete waste of clutch. Great interior, solid chassis, etc, but horrible tires, annoying traction control and felt like it weighed a ton. Got on the waiting list for the M3 and took a peek at the z8 inside the dealership. So, the guy looked at my twice, asked my age a few times, and reluctantly handed me the keys. Hey, it's for charity buddy! He mentioned that there was a nasty accident on the other tour with a nearly 25 year old and the insurance got messy. whatever. Steering wheel is amazing. Perfect size, great feel for the road. Gauges were cool. Of course the motorized rear windows were killer. I might be in the minority, but the exhaust sounds absolutely gorgeous at every RPM. On the beginning of my ten mile tour I immediately turned off the traction control. I can't imagine how you 96+ guys and gals stand that. I did feel some of the understeer qualities of the car, but it seemed very neutral overall. Engine felt like it wanted to keep going past 8000. Silky smooth transmission mated with an effortless clutch. This is not even near the same car as my 95. Different class altogether. Dream car. 'nuf said. I can't wait to get one of these in 8-10 years. Jonathan 95 M3
