At first I was dissappointed until I noticed and pressed the Sport button and turned off the DSC. This totally tranformed the car. The sport mode should be the normal mode and the control should be renamed "parking attendant"." actually, I have recently read (can't remember the source right now) that the Sport mode is totally linear (re: gas pedal vs. throttle opening), and the normal mode is slowed down at low throttle openings to make it easier to maneuver in traffic. I guess the short runners and six throttles make it jumpy... andy r.

I got the same story when I (tried) to sign up: "No M cars". If they really are available, but only on race day, oh, I mean, the day of the event, then I suspect there will be a long line. Reservations for The Drive are a good thing. Last year my wife and I had a reservation and we went to the head of a line of 7 people waiting for the M coupe. But be warned. If you are more than 5 minutes late for your reservation, you lose it, which is only fair. This happened to a friend of mine who was 11 minutes late (by my watch). > two years ago a 22 year old was arrested driving > an M Coupe for the "Cure" in Chapel Hill, NC. He > was going 140 MPH - thus you now have > to be >25 to sign up for the M3 Well that's good news. I can't think of anyone over 25 who can drive that fast :-O ===== David Kroth david_kroth@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Date: Tue, 22 May 2001 13:34:02 EDT From: JEFFHARKER@aol.com Subject: re. Track packing Eric (and others in the same category); Leave the R tires at home. Learn how to control the car on street rubber and then in a couple years when you are starting to get the hang of it; then upgrade the tires. Bimwad Bob (Stommel) had an article in the Roundel some years ago on what to take. I've have a copy in word if you want, although I'll bet somebody has it tucked away on their web site (Jim P, Neil, Jack, Seth?). --jeff (couple of track weekends in the past ;-) , Mid Ohio this one) << I am planning on taking both my R and street tires and running possibly on the streets all day but I might stick the R's on at the end. >>

The ratios he mentioned are for the diff. They did make some subtle changes to the '96 up models' 5spd though. I can't remember exactly what they were, but there was a p/n or description difference when I last looked it up. I remember the changes as being _very_ minor however. -- Roger Baker Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> wrote: > The ratios you are talking about are in the diff, no? I can't think of anyone >over 25 who can drive that fast :-O Oh, there have been all kinds of incidents on the "Drive". Dallas is usually the last stop for the "Drive" because the Susan G. Komen Fund is headquarted in Dallas and there is a big ball to announce the amount of money raised. Hence, we get the cars after they have been trashed and often don't get them at all. :( The first year I learned the 540i 6-speed (the M5 was not produced yet) had required SIX (6) cluthes in less than 19,000 miles!!! We didn't get the M3 that year because it had been wrecked 3-4 times and finally totalled. Nor the 750iL. Some "elderly" gentleman had wrapped it around a tree early on in the tour. They said it was a $60,000 repair job. Also each year, several of the cars are stolen! The Z3's are very popular for drive away theives. I've signed up to drive the Z3 6 cylinder manual twice now and never gotten a chance because it had been stolen. What I want to know is what BMW does with these cars after the "Drive"? God help anybody that buys these "beat to shit" BMW's used! I hope BMW just scraps them. They have all certainly been abused. Lowell Seaton '95 M3 - not used on Drive for the Cure! Dallas, Texas

Shifter assembly, driveshaft, and crossmember brings the price to about $3400 for the 6k mile unit. Others are available usually, but this is the only one our supplier has in stock now that is not taken. It took three of us almost 10 hours to do the job. I needed 16 hours to install the vents windows, and rear fog lights, and that seemed quite long enough. 30 man-hours, yikes! Has anyone made their electric vent windows one-touch? -John '96 318is -- john.firestone@nord-com.net
