My car is fairly modified, mainly suspension, but also exhaust, intake, Sharked, etc. Is there anything I should be concerned about with the inspection? I know the obvious like "don't touch the air filter" and "don't touch my Super Blue fluid", but anything else, expecially with the Shark Injector? Vern Anderson 98 M3/2

For the brake fluid, I'd probably let them flush it unless you recently put the SuperBlue in there. They will probably use the computer to actuate the abs pumps and really flush the system well, no? About the shark injector, isn't that the main reason for having the "injector" version? You'll be able to unshark it, bring it in for service, have whatever updates done to the ECU, and then reshark it. Chester ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? If so, could you please email it to me. Any format is fine. Also, does anyone know what the official colors (pantone code??) are for the motorsports stripes? thanks jeff Mcarjeff@pacbell.net

#5. slightly OT: Craftsman Jacks/Jack Stands - from Joe Kannookadan

Date: Tue, 22 May 2001 16:29:58 -0500 From: "Joe Kannookadan" <joe.kannookadan@sourcelight.com> Subject: slightly OT: Craftsman Jacks/Jack Stands I was in Sears and I bought a Craftsman Professional series 3.5 ton jack w/ a couple 3.5 ton ratcheting jack stands to work on my M3. I thought it was good deal, so I went ahead and picked it up. With all the talk of Norco, Milwaukee, Lincoln, and import crap out there, is there anything I should be concerned with Craftsman I suppose? I'm not an aspiring pancake, so should I be returning this or is someone else safely using a Crafstman? --- joe

#6. Rear shock mounts - from GluAll@aol.com
Top
Date: Tue, 22 May 2001 17:30:31 EDT From: GluAll@aol.com Subject: Rear shock mounts Thanks everyone who replied to my previous post on installing the rear shock mounts. They were very easy to get on thanks to your tips. The longest part of time was getting my car up on the jackstands. My car is lowered a lot so its difficult to get the jack underneath it. Anyways, heres my new problem. Shortly after i installed my new shock mounts i went over a very harsh bump (railroad tracks) and my shock pushed straight thru the new shock mount. At first i thought this was because the shock may have been faulty, but after replacing my H & R with the OEM M3 one, it happened again. Does anyone know what might cause this? Perhaps my springs are very stiff and i need to upgrade to an even more robust shock mount...like the ones in BMP (www.bmpd.com) Those are about 100 for the pair and seem to be stronger than BMW OEMs. Anyone have any suggestions or reccomendations?

Date: Tue, 22 May 2001 17:30:50 -0400 From: Vern Anderson <vanderson@cerebellumsoft.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Inspection II with modified car Chester, I'm really not fond of the idea of constantly taking the Shark Injector program in and out of my ECU on a regular basis. I'm an electrical engineer by education and I know how badly things can get screwed up, regardless of how good the product is (this is not a slam against JC or BMW, just that stuff happens). It's in there and it's staying there - a new ECU is not in my budget (haven't priced it, but I'm sure it costs a few sets of race tires). Probably overly paranoid on my part; if someone does this on a regular basis, please tell me I'm over-reacting. As far as the brake fluid, I may consider letting them flush it (it's 3 months old), but I had planned to do this in about 2 months anyway. It's not dirty and it was just bled today. I try to avoid letting the dealer do anything that's important to me (brakes, suspension, etc.) as they screw too many things up. I'm just happy to get a free oil change, new fuel filter, new plugs and whatever disposable parts they will install for me. I may think about the brakes. You say use the computer to activate the ABS to get a good flush? Is this standard BMW dealer practice or just good ones? My dealer and all others here that I've tried have done really bonehead things to my car in the past and I'll spend Thursday night anyway double-checking the car to make sure they didn't do anything wrong. Thanks for the ideas and info, Vern Chester Wong wrote: > For the brake fluid, I'd probably let them flush it unless you recently put the > SuperBlue in there. The good thing about a Craftsman floor jack is that it has a lifetime warranty, no? Just bring it back to Sears if you break it. *ALWAYS* use jack stands when you finally lift the car and you should be fine. The only differences between the various jacks is saddle height, chassis height, perhaps tighter tolerances (in terms of side to side slop, etc, etc). Just be safe and you should be fine. #9. M3 BRAKES - from Patrick Dargan
Top
Date: Tue, 22 May 2001 18:08:47 -0400 From: "Patrick Dargan" <darg01@earthlink.net> Subject: M3 BRAKES =20 In the Tech Talk" column of May's Roundel, someone asks if he can put Euro rotors on his M coupe, as his stock rotors are warping. Mike Miller, Technical Editor, replies positively, but states in passing: =20 "For the life of me I can't understand why BMW downgrades brakes on their U.S. bound cars. The E46 M3 was shown all over the world with awesome two-piece cross drilled rotors. What are we getting on the = U.S. spec E46 M3? Out-of-the-box 330i brakes -- which by the way are = warping on some 330i's..." =20 Can someone confirm this? I understood that, aside from various emissions requirements, the new M3 was a "world car". =20

#10. need help shopping for Toyo RA1 - from Fadeev, Alex

Date: Tue, 22 May 2001 17:39:32 -0500 From: "Fadeev, Alex" <alex.fadeev@verizon.com> Subject: need help shopping for Toyo RA1 Hi folks, I'm finally getting on with the plan to run long lasting R tires all summer long in DFW area (TX). The catch is that I know off only two relatively long lasting R tires: Yoko 032Rs and Toyo RA1s. Since 032Rs are hideously loud I've started seriously looking for RA1s. So far the only local place that got back to me confirming they can get me RA1s is a local Discount Tire store. And even than the tires would need to be shipped from CA and wind up costing $195 a piece. Has anyone found cheap source for Toyo tires in general and 235/40/17 RA1s in particular? TIA, alex

I understood that, aside from various > emissions requirements, the new M3 was a "world car". > =20 All that basically meant is that everybody gets the same engine, instead of the US getting a bored-n-stroked 2.5 ('95 M3) or 2.8 (96+ M3). There are still plenty of tradeoffs here in the overly-litigious US; Euro-style floating rotors are one. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4
