Been there, done that. The only 'trick' is to make sure the steering wheel is at the 12 o'clock position (wheels straight ahead). After pulling the cluster far enough out, reach your hand in back and disconnected all 3 electrical plugs. The slide the cluster out toward the center of the car (by the radio). No broken ears or cracked faces if you're careful :) Nick > yes this is neccessary. with it loose you barly have room to get to some > of > the bulbs. but removing it all together is (airbag, steering wheel) > imposible. > you can try it but you'll break an ear off the cluster or crack the > face. not > worth the effort. the tools you will need. > torx t25, 16mm socket, breaker bar, hammer , punch, phillips head pocket

#4. [E36M3] Replacement Windshield - from Colin_S_Whelan@rrfc.raytheon.com

Date: Tue, 5 Jun 2001 07:24:49 -0400 From: Colin_S_Whelan@rrfc.raytheon.com Subject: [E36M3] Replacement Windshield Group, It's almost time to replace the front windshield due to numerous little chips and bulleyes. I know the original BMW glass is quite soft, but also of good optical quality. Mostly I'm worried about a good installation, with no leaks and rattles/squeaks. I know the BMW dealers here subcontract glass work out to local companies who install the factory BMW glass. Here in MA, insurance should cover free glass replacement, so I was thinking of just taking it to a dealer. Any thoughts of factory vs aftermarket glass? Does the aftermarket glass have the BMW roundel on it? Thanks! Colin '98 M3

It is possible however to buy the same windshield without the roundel (OEM). I may be going out on a limb here but ALL BMW dealers, body shops, etc. subcontract out their glass work. There may be a rare body shop that has their own glass guy but I would _guess_ that that is extremely rare. If you know of one then go ahead tells about it and prove me wrong. :p > Here in MA, insurance should cover free glass replacement, so I was > thinking of just taking it to a dealer. Unless, the dealer is giving you a FREE loaner why bother. Just call them and find out who they use. > Any thoughts of factory vs aftermarket glass? They are _probably_ equal in quality. OK, b/c I have been on these lists for a while I have seen a lot of rumors about windshields. So I decided to asked the shop. Yes, he may be like the sales guy who told me about the E46M3 limited production and he probably did not tell me everything and I am an idiot for even believing him but here it is and at least I asked... Q1. Will insurance pay for OEM glass. A1. YES. They don't care!! Q2. Will the insurance force me to repair the windshield? I want to replace it. A2. NO. They don't care!! If you opt for replacement then your comprehensive, unless you crashed, deductible kicks in and YOU help pay. If your comprehensive limit is >$100 your a fool. :) Q3. I have heard that repairs are invisible. A3. Buzzz... go to the back of the line. You will see it. If not I'll send Chester over and he'll be happy to point it out and any other flaw on your car. :) Additionally, the installer should warn you, mine did, that repairs can go sour, things happen and your small crack can turn into a broken windshield. At which point you will have to wait for them to order you a new one. Or more likely they will try to sell you a PPG or whatever they have. If you do opt for repair your insurance (read: my insurance) will foot the entire bill, read: no deductible. Q3. If Q1 is true then why did I hear on the Internet, blah, blah... A3. B/c your local installer lied to you or you have crap insurance. I really pushed Q3 and the guy actually showed me his computer and costs. If the installer orders a BMW windshield your insurance will pay ~$289 (1997 BMW M3 windshield). If you order the installers TOP of the LINE PPG windshield he bills the insurance ~$599. They will reimburse him ~50% of that price. Now if you are keeping up that is ~ the same $289 that they will pay for the BMW windshield. Hence, they don't care. Well who cares? The installer! He said that if ANYTHING happens and he breaks, scratches, etc. the BMW screen then HE has a hard time getting the local BMW shop to help him get a replacement and _may_ have to eat it. If he breaks a PPG screen he just tells them it's defective and gets a credit. Why b/c he's a retailer for PPG and they understand s&@*? happens. In addition, to the screen cost the installer gets a few bucks for labor and materials. So if he doesn't have ANY problems you get a new BMW windshield and he makes a few cents. If you opt for the PPG you _probably_ get the same windshield sans a few cosmetic differences but the installer makes more. > Does the aftermarket glass have the BMW roundel on it? No. The other problem, explained to me by the glass shop is that they have to glue on the mirror peg and that it is impossible to get perfect. They hate it and it's a PITA for them. Chester this is not an option for you ;) If you are picky get the BMW glass, read: Chester and anyone like him, including me. HTH. S <- w/State Farm for over 18 years. #8. Looking for suggestions re. brake discs and pads - from Luis Veras

Date: Tue, 5 Jun 2001 10:34:45 -0400 From: "Luis Veras" <veras@tricom.net> Subject: Looking for suggestions re. brake discs and pads As some of you might remember, about a month ago I changed my discs and pads. Also, as some of you migh know, I am in the Dominican Republic, so I pretty much got killed in pricing (I paid almost $800 for it). Back then someone on this list suggested that I could have gotten everything (except of course the labor) through mail order for around $350. Well, a friend of mine has to change his dics and pads now, and I told him that I would find out for him where to get them in the US through mail order, so he doesn't get squated as I did. That's where you guys come in. Where can I order these through mail order? Maybe online? Also, would you suggest to go stock all around? I heard of some pads that develop low dust, brake just as good as stock, and sliglty cheaper, do you know what brand they are? ('cause I can't remember). What about their lifetime? Do they last more than stock? What about discs? I heard someone suggesting brembo discs. Are they better than stock? What about euro floating discs? If the price is right, I might also order a full set for myself of whatever my friend gets, so I am ready for my next change, whenever that may be. (Any idea when this will be? How many miles do you get between pads and/or disc changes?) Thanks for everything! Luis

(Any > idea when this will be? How many miles do you get between pads and/or disc > changes?) Kind of depends on your driving style. I autocross my car reasonably frequently, but don't really take it to the racetrack for drivers schools. My car is still on its original pads and rotors at 63k miles. The car has seen lots of highway miles that didn't involve much braking though. Hope that helps, Andrej '97 M3
