From PTG, -Motor must be rebuilt after every 50 hours, minimum. "Your experience could be worse." -If their lucky, the differential lasts 8 hours, usually only 4. This is a custom-made, hardened unit (in an M5 case). The stock M3 unit lasted 20-40 minutes (ouch). -Rear axles just go spontaneously (as do driveshafts, occasionally). -Pads cost a lot, but last quite a while. and so it goes....there is a reason that PTG brings 4 motors and two semi's to each race! (their budget is in the millions) I hate to say it, but this car will probably end up in a collector's hands, seeing the occasional track school but little more. I have a hard time imagining many club racers with the money to support this car for an entire season... -peterg

Date: Wed, 6 Jun 2001 20:32:44 -0400 From: "Gil" <gpasswat@dmv.com> Subject: RE: visit to Tate BMW Annapolis, MD Kevin, About 2 years and change I too stopped in at Tate BMW, just to look around you know, yeah then I saw the 1998 Boston Green M3 sedan. Sooo I drooled for a while, stalled... then I bought it from Kevin. As you have mentioned Will is very good at running the service department. My M3 has been in numerous times for service, etc. The only bad experience I had was when they replaced the rear tires. Basically they put the wheels on the wrong sides (read one had a little curb rash from previous owners) and I just wanted to keep it on the curb side. Also the spare was just loose in the trunk. I think they just forgot. No real big problem. They do charge too much for a tire change IMO. Now on to the good stuff. They have always been attentive to every problem no matter how small, like the door molding being snapped off at the joint even though you could not really tell, they replaced it, (warranty). The steering wheel had small cracks in the leather from being in the sun, replaced, no charge. The car had been back about four times over 8 months for the instrument cluster dropping all functions intermittingly. They replaced sensors, cluster, etc. Thanks to this list mentioning the speed sensor, they finally replaced the sensor, presto! problem solved. Also front brake pads were replaced, again from information I received from this list regarding the recall notice (they were already aware of the problem). The drivers seat also replaced under warranty because of wear problems before I owned the car.... again from this list mentioning the metal support located under that area of the leather (they cried a little over this but replaced it after the repair did not last). They wash your car after it has been serviced, however I always take it in after I have given it the 3 hour cleaning just so there is no misunderstanding on the care requirements expected from their service people. :). Will told me on one occasion they would have washed it, but were afraid they would just get it dirty, hehe. So I'm picky like Chester, sooorrry! :)) The sales department is well... the sales department, overall they are very knowledgeable. When you go in I think it helps to accidentally drop a large roll of hundreds on the floor to get their undivided attention then they are all yours (at least they don't hound you). I am sure there are other good dealers out there, but I have heard of a lot of bad ones, Tate falls into the first category. I know this was kinda long (I been saving it up) but this list along with Suzy's web site and other individuals are the one stop, definitive, most important source you will find anywhere on the web regarding our beloved M3. Most other sites are full of trash talking really rad duds (13 year olds idolizing the kid next door with a coffee can muffler on a slammed honda civic). just my $.02 Gil, 1998 M3/4 Boston Green Denton, MD -------------------- 8 -------------------- Date: Wed, 06 Jun 2001 14:47:36 -0400 From: "Kevin M. #7. Brake Rotors - from Rick Pocock

Date: Wed, 06 Jun 2001 21:45:52 -0400 From: Rick Pocock <Rick@DovetailRacing.com> Subject: Brake Rotors Let me apologize if this topic has been beat to death in this digest in the past, as I suspect it has. However, if you can share any positive experiences with me, I'd be very grateful. The issue is warped brake rotors on my '98 M3/4. As a result of no more than eight or ten track sesssions, I've warped two sets of factory rotors in less than 4,000 miles. Many people have suggested changing to cross-drilled rotors. Many people have suggested changing to slotted rotors. Many people have suggested changing to floating rotors. My question is simply, has anyone found a rotor that's not prone to warping under normal track conditions? I'd really appreciate any experienced-based recommendations. (At the risk of sounding testy, I respecfully ask that you not reply with a lecture on how I'm warping my rotors because I'm "dragging" my brakes on the track rather than using them with authority. I'm an accomplished SCCA road racer who has acquired a reasonably high level of braking skills. Thanks!) Rick Pocock Dovetail Racing ITB Alfa Romeo Spider, No. 42

#10. Seat Covers for Vader Seats - from Peter Guagenti

Date: Wed, 06 Jun 2001 19:15:29 -0700 From: Peter Guagenti <peter@guagenti.com> Subject: Seat Covers for Vader Seats I saw a car at the Thunderhill CCA Driving School last month with a set of very nice fitted black cloth seat covers. They covered the headrests seperately, and had the motorsport stripes sewn in. I did not get a chance to ask the driver where he got them, and after searching the web for a few days, I haven't come across them. Does anyone know who could have made them and where I might be able to pick up a set? Any advice is appreciated. -peterg
