I have 5 (very thin)spoke Breyton wheels that show off the rotors. LOOKS! Euro floating rotors are boring! My wheel/cross drilled rotor combo looks beautiful. As far as how it affects braking, I've gone through two sets of rotors and pads, and I have yet to see a difference versus stock. Not sure what you mean by "weaker". I put close to 40K miles on the first set and didn't see any of those famous hairline cracks anywhere around the holes. Maybe if you track your car it's another story... 70K miles of cross drilled rotors and still a very satisfied customer. #3. John who? - from David Hogg

Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2001 21:17:17 -0700 From: "David Hogg" <springwood@blazenet.net> Subject: John who? Self-depreciating NASCAR-related humor. Scroll down if not interested. Spent Monday thru Wed this week at the VIR Skip Barber School (South Track) to learn to better drive my E36 M3 (mandatory content). On Tues the NASCAR boys were practicing for Sears Point on the North Course, so we all went and ate lunch at the North snack bar where they were. The other Skippy boys stayed together, but not me. I found a table with a guy in a fancy driver suit and an empty seat, so I joined him. Nice young guy. Very pleasant, very polite. I told him I wasn't a NASCAR fan but I was curious about the equipment and what they go through to prepare for a road race. We talked 15 minutes or so about NASCAR car setup and how difficult it is to get these beasts to handle a road course. He said, "believe me, you guys are having a lot more fun than we are today." He had taken the 3-day Skippy course a few years ago. When he finished his lunch, he excused himself and got up to leave. I said, "By the way, what's your name?" He just grinned from ear to ear and said matter-of-factly, "John Andretti." I was only 90% mortified until I walked into the Driving Impressions trackside store to be greeted by a life-size cardboard cutout of J.A. smiling at me. Then I went to 100%. But then I also got to talk briefly with Ward Burton and Rusty Wallace. It may have been that my "BMW Motorsport" hat didn't look much like a NASCAR accessory, but they just weren't as interested in talking with me as my buddy John was. Moments later J.A. was rocketing down the straight (on the short course, mind you) at a consistent, rev-limited 163 mph, lap after lap. We had the Skippy radar gun on him. These cars don't handle like M3's, but they're 650 hp BEASTS that demand serious drivers to tame them. (Especially guys who can turn left really well.) They're not the greatest road course drivers, but I have new respect for the skill of these good old boys. Dave Hogg

Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2001 21:30:51 EDT From: Shelhart2@aol.com Subject: Racing helmets - Difference between Snell SI 2000 and SA? I've got a Snell (SI 2000 imprinted on the inside) helmet (motorcycle application). What is the difference between the SA designation that I've seen as a requirement? I know I can use it for driving schools and club events but can I for others? Where is the best place to source online (or West Central Florida)? TIA. Shel Hart 1998 M3

I would call Supreme and ask what colors they have. When I got mine, this was so new that they didn't have and official color codes. I just said I had the Dove Grey interior and wanted the grey covers ( as opposed to the black ones). I expect you would get the first year warranty in the U.S. as part of the worldwide warranty. After that you might only get the standard, European, two year, "fair deal" (Kulanz) agreement during which you pay the dealer for labor and Munich pays for defective or mis-engineered parts. -John '96 318is -- john.firestone@nord-com.net
