#3. A couple more tech procedures to check out - from Dorffer, Rich
Top
Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 14:06:59 -0400 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: A couple more tech procedures to check out Having done this on three cars now (both on the body and on the headlights), I highly recommend it. Also, I applied the product via a wet application for the body (8 mil 3M Scotchcal) and for the headlights (40 mil 3M Scotchcal). The wet application uses a distilled water/alcohol mix for small applications and/or a distilled water/soap solution for larger applications where you need to be able to position the product (similar to tinting windows). It appears that Jim is using the 8 mil 3M Scotchcal via a dry application. The 8 mil 3M Scotchcal is primarily designed for body/paint protection. The 40 mil 3M Scotchcal is designed for head light protection. Obviously YMMV. You can get the product in bulk and precut from www.xpel.com. They are very helpful and provide the right tools and instructions for the job. No affiliation, just a happy customer. I just did the headlights and fog lights on my 1989 325is this weekend and I am very pleased with the results. As always, Jim instructions and pictures are quite good, just wanted to make sure everyone knew there was more than one way to skin this cat. Also, with respect to chip repair, I am going to give a product, called Langka, a try next weekend. Anyone else heard of it or tried it (www.langka.com/). I have done it many times the way Jim describes but it is tedious and difficult to get good results in my opinion. A far as body shop, Doing a good paint job is more of an art rather than science. I would recommend you to wait a little bit for a good body shop rather than rush it. There is a reason why these recommended shop are book solid and other are not. On another note, is your M5 a E34 or E39? I would think that ASC or DSC would have helped to prevent this kind of accident. I had a close call one on a 101 onramp in my M3 earlier in the year and right after my rear started sliding ASC took over and brought it back inline. That is why I keep telling people not to turn off the ASC when driving in the streets, you never know when you might need it:) Good Luck! #9. Replacement shocks/struts - from Preston Carey
Top
Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 15:32:32 -0400 From: "Preston Carey" <pcarey@babson.edu> Subject: Replacement shocks/struts I need new shocks/struts for a 98 M3/4 (w/ 50k miles). Car is daily driver and sees a couple of track days a year. I want to keep stock ride abilities both in handling and ability to absorb Boston roads. A couple of questions: 1) I am under the assumption that the stock shocks/struts are Boge. If I buy Boge shocks/struts that are designed for the M3 are they identical valving to OEM? IOW, is there any benefit to paying the higher price for OEM shocks? 2) Are the low end Koni's (SA) better than the stock system? My major reluctance is that I have a crazy couple of months ahead and don't want to spend the time figuring out the proper setting for the Koni's. Has anyone got this nailed? (I saw the thread about a month ago on this but no one had a definite answer). 3) Should I be replacing anything else besides RSM's while I am doing this? Any bushings that are problematic in the 50-100k period? TIY. Regards, Preston

#10. Eurasian = Good, Coilovers = Good - from scott

Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 17:12:32 -0400 From: "scott " <scott@ditherdog.com> Subject: Eurasian = Good, Coilovers = Good First off, just wanted to mention that I got some really incredible parts and service from Eurasian, 800 824 8814. No affiliation, just a happy customer - the prices were right and Dave went out of his way to get me some extra bits right before my garage day. And I just wanted to add to the on/off suspension discussion by saying that after a lot of hard thought and test drives, I settled with the H&R coilovers. I talked to Alan and Kit quite a bit about it, and they both told me "It's what you'd eventually upgrade to anyway, so you might as well get 'em." Though ultimately it was going for rides in their cars that sealed the deal for me. My friend Scott F. and I did the installation in about 6 hours total, not counting food breaks and rest periods. I think the next time it could go even faster. Also, Scott was able to borrow an electric impact gun from a friend of his, and it made a world of difference - I can't believe I don't own one of these, it's definitely moved up on the purchase list. I initially set them on the lowest setting, which turns out to be "Cut-Coil-Ghetto-Civic-Slammed." Obviously a little adjustment is in order, though I'm getting thumbs-up from the local Street Racer types... ;P

Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 17:14:16 EDT From: Jzy308@aol.com Subject: Puckered Steering Wheel Fellow Bimmers: Someone recently posted re "puckering" on the steering wheel, ostensibly from sunlight. I retired recently and can say your Bimmer sure likes 8 hr in a covered garage every day instead of outside. My 98 M3/4 began to live "outside" in June, 1999, and the steering wheel was replaced (under warranty) with only 16,600 miles: April, 2000. Now, with, 27,000 miles, I am seeing the same thing: a distinct puckering at the 1100 position. I am scheduled for an oil service w/in a month and have put the Dealer on notice that the wheel needs replacing. Let us see what happens. In the meantime, if any of you out there have had a similar experience, please comment. The Dealer replaced the original wheel w/such alacrity that I sensed it was not the first time. Carl
