#1. Engine Whine........Again - from cemick
Top
Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2001 10:46:00 -0400 From: "cemick" <cemick@snet.net> Subject: Engine Whine........Again In my 1996 M3, a year and 11,000 miles ago I had the rear main seal replaced due to a engine whine noise caused by the engine vacuum = drawing past the seal. It took the dealer three tries to fix it. First, they replaced the belt tensioner. Still whined. Then the Northeast technical rep listened to it and suggested replacing the pcv system. Still whined. Then they did the seal, per my suggestion, after reading that others out there had a similar issue/remedy. Whine went away.......until last week. =20 Is anybody else having similar problems with engine crank seals? Is there a better seal than the BMW part? Is there a benefit to reducing the vacuum within the motor? Noise goes away when dip stick or oil cap is removed. Any ideas as to what is deteriorating the seal effectiveness? Last years seal looked perfect? I have been using Mobil 1 15-50. =20 Chris McCormick 96 Whiney M3=20 =20

Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2001 11:44:15 EDT From: RogRacer@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] Door panel Sep I've gone thru several types of adhesives to try to reattach the vinyl trim on my rear passenger side panels (coupe). My suggestion: lightly sand the surfaces to which the adhesive is to be applied, clean with alcohol, and apply 3M Super Trim Adhesive. The two-part epoxies I've tried don't work. I'm not sure how long the 3M adhesive will work, but it is the best thing I've tried so far... Roger RogRacer@aol.com '95 M3...in the Florida heat.

#3. Re: [E36M3] AA Exhaust Install - from Jimenez, Ariel

I was able to do it this morning with the help of a buddy. Took about two hours, most of which was spent cleaning some of the rust off the bolts and nuts and such. Installation instructions from AA were like 1) remove old exhaust, 2) remove hangars, 3) put new exhaust on. So I'm glad I asked here first, so that I could get a little more detail. :) Only problem I have with the exhaust is that it looked like UPS dropped it or something because one of the tips has a small chip on it. Otherwise, it looks great, sounds awesome, though I can do without the stench... Thanks Ariel Jimenez 99 Titanium Silver M3/2

#4. Anyone here tried a 3.73 diff? - from Todd Ogi
Top
Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2001 12:59:20 -0700 From: Todd Ogi <TOgi@etimecapital.com> Subject: Anyone here tried a 3.73 diff? Has anyone on this board tried 3.73 differential gearing? I've checked out Turner's site and found that my top speed would go from about 165 (optimistic, most likely) to about 140 with something like 400-500 rpms higher at any given speed. I have a 95 running the 3.15 diff now but I'm looking for more low end grunt to compete with the 3.2 L engine through second gear and I don't want to get a turbo or a supercharger and I don't want to sacrifice driveability. I've heard that the diff is a "poor mans supercharger" but again, I like to autox and don't know how this will actually effect my runs (considering that with the 3.15 I never get outta second gear...but I never get to look down and see what the speed/tachometer is reading either). The only reason I'd even look at a 3.73 is one of my friends is getting rid of a BMP unit reasonably cheap. Anyone have any input on this? I appreciate all the help. T

#6. Part numbers for glove box - from Luis Veras
Top
Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2001 13:17:28 -0400 From: "Luis Veras" <veras@tricom.net> Subject: Part numbers for glove box I'll try one more time... A couple of weeks ago I wanted to change the passenger side panel that has the A/C vent windows. But while looking closer into it, the glove box itself also has some damages; it's bent due to the heat and sun, so it doesn't close properly. If I fall into a pothole, the glove box will even pop itself open. So, I'd like to get the part numbers for the entire glove box panel, including the part that has the passenger side windows and the lock for the glove compartment. I know the part that has the A/C vent windows costs around $30, but dunno about the part that has the glove box. Please click below for a link of a picture taken from page 513-2 of the E36 Bentley Manual, and put in a red frame the exact parts that I want. http://216.71.22.68/ebay/passpanel.jpg I'd like to get the part numbers, please, and where I can get online. Thanks in advance for your help. Anyone know when is the last month of production for the 2001 model year E46 M3? Just wondering when they will switch to the 2002 model year. I'm next on the list to get an M3 at the local dealer and would prefer a 2002 rather than get one of the last 2001 cars. Suzy

Yes, I know that parking in NYC can be dangerous but this time it was in a completely different neighborhood. I have parked there many, many times with no trouble. When I went back to my car this morning, my mirrors were gone. There wasn't any other damage but I still just don't understand... :-( I guess that it really stays in the garage now. -Wayne
