Hmmm so the list would start something like this ... premature clutch wear, lugging of the engine, greater wear on the cylinder liner, bearings, piston rings from the greater lugging torque, engine retardation from knocking (you won't be able to hear this because your knock sensors will adjust it out but still will have some)..... I'm sure the list is very long which other people from the list will soon expand on. steve At 12:44 PM 6/18/01 -0500, Luis Veras wrote: >Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 13:39:39 -0400 >From: "Luis Veras" <veras@tricom.net> >Subject: Starting in 2nd gear > >I've always been curious about this... > >For ride comfort (in some cases when riding with certain passengers), I >start the car in 2nd gear. I had to run 10mm hubcentric spacers and they just barely fit. (my strut got clean in one area) 255/40r17 Kumhos on 8.5" stock wheels barely fit with 10mm spacers. Little bit of rubbing, but nothing a BFH won't fix. ;) If you can, try 15mm spacers. with the H&R sports, you don't need to worry about rubbing on the fender liner... -kit 97 m3/4 w/ no more race tires... This rotary knob works for the dash vents only. It seems to simply mix outside air with the warm or cold air being produced by the climate control system. I don't see a lot of value added by this feature. (Or, am I missing something in the way it functions?) Does your AC get really, really cold? Mine does not. It gets cold but it does not get frigid cold. (Maybe the black leather interior and untinted glass have something to do with it.) I can put the AC on the highest fan setting, coolest temperature, recirculate interior air and NOT feel too cold during a 30 minute highway drive in direct sun on a 90 degree day. How can I tell when the AC system needs a re-charge? >Finally, how can one tell if one has a water pump with a plastic >impeller? Don't know. #6. Excessive wear on inner front tires... - from Luis Veras
Top
Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 15:11:24 -0400 From: "Luis Veras" <veras@tricom.net> Subject: Excessive wear on inner front tires... Hi again, I removed my left front wheel to add the roundel logo that had been missing from that wheel for about a couple of weeks. Anyway, when I removed it, I noticed that even though my tires are basically new (about 3,000 miles), and they all look new from every angle when they are placed on the car (maybe 85-95% of thread left), the inner part of this tire was all worn out, maybe like 30-45% left. I then decided to check all tires, and the rear tires look good all around, but both front tires are pretty worn out on the inner side. The outer side and the middle are good as new. I balance and align the tires regularly. Is this normal? What could have possibly caused this? Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

#8. camber shims - from RFKoby@aol.com
Top
Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 15:34:33 EDT From: RFKoby@aol.com Subject: camber shims Approximately 0.040" thick washers gives you 1/2 a degree negative camber ON TOP OF WHAT THE CAR ALREADY HAS. If the car already has 1.5 negative, and you want to get 3 negative, you need 1.5 EXTRA negative camber. So you will need to add approximately 0.120" between each lower strut mounting point. your 0.230" washers will add over 2.85 negative and with your suspension already having about 1.5 negative, you will have 4.35 negative. rfkoby From: "Tom Tice" <tetice@triad.rr.com> Subject: Strut Assembly ? and Camber Shims My washers are about 0.115 inches in thickness. I can use one or two (total of 0.230 inches). Any idea how much extra camber these two steps would add. And also (I know this is a bit more of a guess) any idea how much total camber I will end up with? TIA, Tom Tice

#9. RE: Portable Canopy/Sunshade - from Riley, Scott
Top
Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 16:30:10 -0500 From: "Riley, Scott" <SRiley@CardinalCapital.com> Subject: RE: Portable Canopy/Sunshade Thanks to everyone for their help. I ended up buying the EZ-UP (8x12) canopy at Academy (regional sporting goods retailer) on Friday for around $175. I used it this weekend at an autocross and it worked very well. Of course, I wish that it was 12'x20', so that it would cover my entire car with a little room left over for my seating area, but I digress... It did not take too long to install the first time and will be much quicker the next go-round. I think the 60-second advertising claim is a little optimistic, but it definitely should take no more than 3-5 minutes depending on how many people are helping. With four people, it would take 1-2 seconds since one person could man each corner as you "walk" the canopy out, but it gets a little awkward doing it by yourself. Excellent quality and very wind resistant. The design allows for a complete bolt-down into asphalt, etc. which I may consider down the road, but (as someone suggested) using the four street wheels/tires as anchors (pole through the hub) was sufficient enough on this particular day. Thanks again. Scott Riley 99 M3 on 6/15/01 12:22 PM, "Riley, Scott" <SRiley@CardinalCapital.com> wrote: > >> Does anyone know of a good source for a portable canopy/sunshade? I wish the knob was lighted as my SO likes to change it and I spend 5 minutes trying to figure out why the air is soo cold. This feature was explained to me as a control for the driver so that you can keep the air cool enouph to stay alert when the rest of the passengers are nice and toasty. I can see why they bothered: at 150mph with 3 passengers, a nice alert driver is good thing. Jason
