My apologies to Luis - I really thought the humor in this was self-evident, but I'm continually surprised at how poorly my sarcasm-based humor travels through email ;) You're in the DR, right? I'm not sure if you've seen the hype for the movie "the Fast and the Furious," but that was the humorous reference I used to try and convey the joke. Sorry 'bout the mixup. M3-relevant content: I won the battle of the tie rods. Last week my friend Scott and I attempted to separate the inner and outer tie rods, using a torch, a 5-lb engineer's hammer, vise grips, and a lot of harsh language. While the latter was probably the most effective, the end result was failure - these things freeze up like the polar ice caps. Last Sunday a fellow lister (Thanks, John!) said "I've got a HUGE pair of channelock pliers you can use," and it turned out to be relatively easy to peel back the locking plate on the inner tie rod securing nut, and unscrew the inner rod from the steering rack using John's Big-Channel-Lock-Of-Death pliers. While I wasn't able to retorque the new nut perfectly to spec, I think the lockplate should prevent the tie rod from working itself loose. Moral of the story? Don't bother trying to separate inner and outer rods, just get it right from the rack. And don't forget to order new lockpates and boot clamps :) Also, that inner nut has a thin 32mm flange - if you've got a thin-wall fan clutch wrench it will fit. best, scott ---------- Original Message ---------------------------------- From: "Luis Veras" <veras@tricom.net> Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 17:33:21 -0400 >I may be missing something here, but how the hell does a loudspeaker to >SOUND like a turbo give you an additional 40-50 HP? > -------------------- 3 -------------------- Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 18:21:44 -0400 From: "Tim Fogerson" <timmy@cybernex.net> Subject: 1998 BMW M3 - Located Northern New Jersey 1998 BMW M3 2DR Cosmos Black All of the standard M3 stuff plus: - Compact Disc Changer - Cruise Control - Heated Front Seats - Onboard Computer - Power Sunroof - Jim Conforti Firmware Upgrade - Clear Lenses - X-brace - Upgraded Transmission Mounts - BL/SS Short Shifter w/ERK (installed by Ben himself!!) - BF Goodrich G-Force KDs - 55,000 Highway Miles - Excellent Condition - $27,500 obo I hate to do this, but I just bought a house and must sell the M3 in order to have any chance of getting my Formula Continental on the track very often this year. I haven't been pushing the sale of this car yet, but now it is time (so I've dropped the price). This car is in excellent condition. It has never been abused and has never seen the track (that's what the Continental is for). It has literally been used as a commuter car over the last three years bombing up and down Rt. 80 on my 64 mile RT daily commute (actually kinda sad). For someone wanting all the goodies, do you have to get a 99 or can you get away with a 98.5? What are the differences? At least with the '95 analog HVAC system when you set the blower speed, you know where the heck it is going to stay. It won't go into "auto" mode and blast you when you first start the engine. I would not worry too much about equally adjusting the temperature knobs. If you don't have a passenger, why bother? Let him/her adjust it. Besides, if you can tell a difference when adjusting the passenger side temp, you are a better man than me. I don't know about you, but here in Texas the M3 A/C is just barely adequate. And I mean BARELY. I usually just turn the driver's side temp all the way COLD. You do know when you turn the driver's side temp knob all the way COLD or all the way HOT, it defaults and overrides the passenger side temp? Read the owner's manual for more info about this feature. As for retrofitting the '96+ Digital HVAC into a '95? It can be done but it is very expensive and tedious. I think one of our list members - John Firestone - did this. I don't know if he would ever do it again. When the '96 M3 came out with the "cool" Digital HVAC, I was pissed. I wanted it! But now I am glad I have the old fashioned rotary knob version. Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 11:26:17 -0400 From: "Jonathan Evans" <jonathanevans@hotmail.com> Subject: RE730 impressions They work great on the rears, very predictably when they are about to give. Not much vocal feedback, but smooth. The fronts are a little different. They will talk to you when they are unhappy. I switched from S-02's to RE-730 (235/40 to 225/45) and the 730's will make plenty of noise when braking, as well as when pushing them through corners. I think that's good for newbies like me. I think I'll go with the S02 or 03 in the front and the cheapest tire I can find in the rear next time. Jonathan 95 M3 LTW wheels

Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 13:23:58 -0400 From: "Jonathan Evans" <jonathanevans@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: RE730 impressions Dan, I guess having different tires front and rear would affect handling, but hey, what doesn't. As long as you find out what that difference is. I'm still confused about the whole understeer/oversteer thing anyway. My old VW would plow through corners, but if you went in too fast and lifted off the throttle, you get serious oversteer (right in a ditch). The old miata was pretty much neutral, but you could goose it to swing the rear out (great for autocross). But then it seemed like it was understeering sometimes. I swear it has a lot to do with the throttle and how the car is weighted. The M3 is very tossable, but still easy to swing the rear out if you punch the throttle. But when you brake and try to steer, good luck. The only time I could really tell on the M3 was at turn one at VIR (my first and only track event) in March where you could hold a turn for what seemed like forever. Long sweeper to the right. You would roll on the throttle and keep the steering wheel in the same spot, and lo and behold, the car would inch inside as though you were steering into the inside of the turn. I'm sure that this happens on every turn, it's just that it happens so quickly that I can't feel/see/hear it. Practice practice! -Jonathan 95 m3 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dan Miley" <dmiley@rcn.com> To: "Jonathan Evans" <jonathanevans@hotmail.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2001 12:55 PM Subject: Re: RE730 impressions > Thanks, Jonathan. It's stock and not used for racing-just for fun and commuting. In 5/99 (25K mi) the microfilter and brake flush were done. In 2/00 Inspection II was done. The inspection light is now on and I brought it to BMW excluservice. They said that there is no need to replace the microfilter for another year and same for the brake flush. They recommended simply an oil service. Does this make sense or should I stick to the owner's manual guidelines? Feel free to reply to me directly, Jason Olin Rockville MD
