If it made a detectable different in power, I'd be real surprised. :) Plus a heavier oil will give more protection to your synchros, etc. -kit 97 m3/4

Most buyers like cars that are stock. Not to mention a waste of money since you've never explored the potential of the car. Try not to do the same thing to your M coupe if I were you... :o) Good luck! Certainly not as sharp a peak as a LED. If I recall correctly, LED's have about a 80 to 120 nm spectral width. Perhaps you could combine a yellow and a green LED and simulate a composite wavelength peak close to 605 nm. Kevin D. McLeaster WB9HMI '95 M3 Arctic Silver

#7. Re: flywheel rattle - from Paul England

Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 01:00:50 -0400 From: "Paul England" <ettsn@mindspring.com> Subject: Re: flywheel rattle I was just talking about this with Neil Deshpande (not on this list, but on UUC) today. A lightweight flywheel does not, in fact, free up any horsepower at all. It merely transfers the effect from a higher gear to a lower one. A heavier flywheel imparts inertial force to a later gear equal and offsetting to the loss in a lower gear with respect to mechanical advantage. Meanwhile, the engine is still making exactly the same horsepower. The loss of inertia using a lighter flywheel aids in off the line effect, but the tradeoff is slightly affected advantage in a higher gear (usually second or third). It all depends on how you plan on using your car. As far as heavier oil reducing horsepower, it sort of does. The engine will make precisely the same amount of horsepower regardless, however if more of it is used sloshing the crank through the pan or turning the oil pump, less is available for powering the gearbox. As an example, it is easier to jog through the air than through water. That doesn't mean you are stronger in air than in water, simply that more of your power is going into making you go. How much can oil affect available HP? Many more factors including temperature, viscosity at various temps and subjectivity to mechanical breakdown factor here. It's a knowable figure, but it probably isn't worth figuring out. Besides, you could fill your car with WD-40 and it would make TONS of extra power available. For the 45 seconds it ran before seizing. Choose your oil based on how it does it's job (protecting your engine) versus the extra few HP it might make available. Hope this helps, and sorry for the long post! -Paul England > From: "Ron Katona" <rkatona@bellatlantic.net> > > I wonder how much HP is robbed from the thicker oil? Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 05:37:03 -0400 From: Mark Greene <gsa@arpinintl.com> Subject: VIN / Insurance Thanks to all who answered about the VIN and US spec car or not...... everyone is convinced including me but how do I prove it with the insurance company? It came in through MA, BMW NA said to contact dealer that had it first, no help. I finally asked BMW NA to write a letter stating that the car is US spec.... is there some identifier that I am missing? It is something that sounds as if it has not had to been proven before much, as proof seems to be "it wouldn't have been on US roads legally for 5 years otherwise". I am starting to threaten my ins company..... thanks again, Mark

Just wanted to thank those that offered help and suggestions before I tackled the suspension upgrade two days ago. And a big thanks to Neil for his extensive write up on the koni strut insert install! I had installed the eibach sways last november, and last night I finished up the install of the h&r sports, koni sa's, and the e46m3 rsm's. This weekend I'll bolt up the ltw x-brace and be done with it! I took it out for a quick (10min) drive last night, but had to hurry back to beat a t-storm, so i really can't go into any detail, but from my first impressions, the ride much better than my tired 70k mile shocks and struts. This is with the koni's half stiff (or half soft...) at all four corners. As for the ride height... Lets just say I hope these suckers don't settle too much. Ride now the height is pretty nice, but is almost a little low for my tastes... But time will tell as to the ride height and performance (and my advanced group school at summit point is two weeks from friday, woohoo!) Take care, Jeremy- 1995///M3 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Mail http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/

See how they respond to that. You may have other vehicles, houses, etc. built in the overall policy would make it a pain in the butt, but then again that would help your "threaten" strategy since they wouldn't want to loose all of that business. Just a thought. Scott Riley
