#1. Fuel pump failure mode? - from Alain van der Heide

Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 22:56:35 -0600 From: "Alain van der Heide" <ajvdh@attglobal.net> Subject: Fuel pump failure mode? I have a '95 M3 with 40k miles on it (the first owner used it as a "Sunday go to meetin'" car), and a MechTech turbo kit. Fuel enrichment under boost is provided by a combination of a new ECU chip and a rising rate fuel pressure regulator (not the ideal solution, but I'm not sure how I'd jigger the fuel maps for bigger injectors - but that's another issue). Under full boost, fuel pressure goes up to about 85 psi(!). The last couple of days, I've noticed that fuel pressure under boost is just hitting 70. It also looks like fuel pressure is a bit down when I'm not under boost. It used to be around 45 at idle, and 50 at part throttle, now it's about 5 psi lower. Does this sound like the fuel pump is going? I've had the turbo on the car for over a year, and its been to the track several times, including two open track events and a school in the last few weeks, so that pump's been under a little stress.

Have to support the wife's college fund. Anyway once she is out (~1yr.) I will get a new one :). Anyway here's the info. Located in the Maryland area: 1998 M3/4A Boston Green (yes the rare automatic!) 55000 miles, all inspections and oil changes, etc. by dealer. (inspection II coming up) Interior: light gray w/M badge seats New RE730's all around. All available options [except] rear wing, power seats, and HK audio. The car is in excellent condition inside and out. asking $28000.00 (less than trade-in from NADA book). retail at~$32000.00 Bottom line I would rather sell it to an fellow M3 nut than an obnoxious dealer that could care less about the car. Thought I would post it here first, maybe someone may be looking. If not I will post up on the internet later. I will supply pictures upon request, exterior, interior, plus a scan of the original window sticker listing all the options and price ~42500.00. I am open to offers, please contact me privately via e-mail for any additional information. Gil, gpasswat@dmv.com M3/4A Boston Green (hopefully graduating to the new M3... oh.. the wife graduates with a B.S , then I get the new M3)

#4. Front air dam grill and brakes vent - from Luis Veras
Top
Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 13:17:13 -0400 From: "Luis Veras" <veras@tricom.net> Subject: Front air dam grill and brakes vent So I'm driving from Santiago back to the capital, Santo Domingo, (about 100 miles appart) at regular speeds of 120-130 MPH, hitting 150 MPH a few times, at a trip average speed of 105 MPH, and half an hour into the trip I hear something braking, some clunking like I stepped into something, and when I look in my rearview mirror I see some parts flying out the back of my car. I stopped over and was relieved to see that it was only the front bumper grill (air dam). No biggie, I guess. It costs about $75 from the dealer, so I won't bother ordering it from the US and having to wait a week. Anyway, when looking closer into the entire front bumper, I noticed that my left brakes vent duct was quite loose, the right one was also slightly loose. They were not like that when I started the trip. So I lost the grill and loosened the brakes ducts by driving at very high speeds for a somewhat prolonged period of time. I didn't hit anything on the road, so the only reason all this happened was the opposing wind at tornado and/or hurricane speeds. Would this be considered normal? I don't think BMW would give a car so much power that it wouldn't be able to support its own parts in place when going at those high speeds. What do you think happened there? Anything I can do to prevent it from happening again? What about the brake ducts? Also, I examined closely the front fan (which the grill undoubtely hit at a very high speed) and I was surprised to see that it only had a few very slight scratches, nothing major, so it can stay there no prob. Anything else that I must look into to see if the grill damaged it? Another thing, can I have the part number for the grill? When I went to the dealer I was presented with two options, both have all horizontal lines, but one of them has two vertical lines that the other one doesn't. They said that the one for my car, a '96 M3 coupe, was the one with the two vertical lines, although I don't remember seeing them in my car (but I could be completely wrong). Which is the one my car uses? Can someone tell me the part number so I can confirm? Thanks in advance for all your help. Luis

There were two types of grills offered, the non-luxury and the luxury version. The non-luxury grill looked like a black honeycomb mesh pattern. The luxury grill was painted body color and has 3 or 4 horizontal slats, with vertical support slats in the back. Since you don't have the luxury package, you must have the mesh-style grill. I believe its part number is 51-11-2-250-685. Nick
