Not everyone is a car enthusiast. For some, a car is simply a means of getting from point A to point B. Doesn't matter if this car is a BMW or a Ford or a Ferrari. This applies to guys, too. John (from another list to which I subscribe) wrote.... Interesting. to me cars are just hunks of metal on top of rubber that I would like to sell for a little more than I paid for them. Suzy, I wasn't bashing women. I was merely pointing out the reality that few of them know what an M3 is. But it's not because they're females. About a month ago I posted a similar post, but regarding some of my male friends that also didn't know the difference between an M3 and a 318. Point is, people at large don't really give the M3 the class it deserves. Heck, I've had people sitting in my car (both females and males) looking at it as if it was a normal car, admiring Camaros and Mustangs (I'm not kidding!), even though the M3 can slap around silly cars like Porsche Boxters and Audi TTs. That's what I'm talking about. But it's just that it happens more often with females than with males. That's all. I'm not making it up or trying to offend anyone. We all know this is a fact. Sure, you won't get the pure accerlation of an M3, but I'm sure many people can drive the 318i around the track faster than I can pilot my M3 around there. Camaros, Mustangs...to each his own. Straight line speed, they might be faster. Get to some twisties and say, "bye, bye." Personally, I think 'stangs and camaros are ugly as heck. The real sloppy sound of the V8 isn't music to my ears. I'd much prefer to listen the E39 M5 engine (though with stock exhaust...even my dad's 740i...it kinda sounds like a vacuum cleaner). I know it's frustrating, but not everyone is like Donna Seeley (sp?) or Kathy Lyle, ya know? :) Heck, I get more stares 'round here from guys driving their slammed rides (Honda, Toyota, Neon, bleh) than the gals. And if I do get a glance from a gal 'round Brooklyn, they aren't exactly the ones that I would like to get the stare from... Anyway, my main point was not to berate other folks who like different cars. At least they're into cars. It's when the trash talking surfaces that you have to put them in their place <G>. Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 14:37:47 From: "Ron Buchalski" <rbuchals@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: Mobil1; oil weights in general Todd, Mobil 1 is available in 10W-40 weight, but it's sold as a motorcycle lubricant. See: http://www.mobil1.com/mobil1_racing/about/products/cycle/index.html You can find probably it at your local motorcycle shop. I'm not sure if there are any issues with using it in an M3. You should probably contact Mobil and ask them. Regarding the oil recommendations in the owner's manual...they are for petroleum-based oils. Synthetic oils fall under the single bar labeled "Special Oils". I contacted BMW about oil recommendations, and they told me that BMW synthetic 5W-30 is acceptable for year-round use. Alternatively, they said that I can put a heavier weight (15w-50) oil in for the summer (I live in MD). After talking to the Mobil 1 reps at F1 Indy last year, I decided to stick with Mobil 1 10W-30 oil for year-round use. I think that the 0W oils are too thin for use in a BMW, unless you're driving above the Arctic Circle. -rb >Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 09:26:02 -0400 (EDT) >From: "Todd C. I put in 15W-50 in summer, but that includes track use where the oil temp hits 250-260 degrees. Unless you're putting that kind of strain on your car I'd think that a 5W-30 or 10W-30 synthetic would be fine, since the former is now the standard dealer fill. Neil 96 M3
