#1. and they say BMW owners are assholes! - from Roman

Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 17:57:27 -0700 From: Roman <roman@arteuro.com> Subject: and they say BMW owners are assholes! Good Evening All, After reading twenty + messages about M3 owner(s) feeling unappreciated and not God like because of the car they drive, I realized that non-BMW owners have a point about some of us. Speaking for myself, I feel very fortunate that I am able to afford such a fine automobile and that I can enjoy the finer driving experience that comes with it. Although, I am patriotic to my brand, I realize that there are better cars and some not as great. I also realize that not everyone can spend the kind of money that is required to attain such a level of performance. Most Mustang, Camero, "Rice" owners, are also driving enthusiast, except their wallets are not always as big. I appreciate what I have and I wish that everyone that wants an M3 can have one. I was not looking to be exclusive when I bought my M3. I was looking for the driving experience that all the automotive magazines were claiming were possible with an M3. After reading some of the posts here and on other BMW groups about hurt feelings (girls not realizing how fortunate they are to be in an M3), putting down other cars (Mustangs, Cameros are pieces of $***), I realize that there are some very insecure M3 owners out there. I also realize why none BMW owners say what they say about us as a whole (read the subject line of this message). I for one am disappointed that other owners of such fine automobiles (with whom I am now official associated) act like such children!!!! I guess money cannot buy common sense or better attitudes. I will keep enjoying driving my M3 for what it is, a high performance, German automobile and not a "pimpin, mac daddy, stud muffin, phat ass, rice burning, mustang killing, chick gettin" ride. Cheers, Roman S. 96 ///M3 Getting girls without the Beamer...

#2. Radiator options anyone? - from Brent Williams

Is there one that won't pop ever 50k miles? Last time around, I used jbweld to get me to the dealership. It works pretty good, and they were impressed with my work! So any ideas so I won't have to pay for the next one when it comes out of warranty? What does Will Turner use? And did his radiator break at Mosport? Just wondering. Brent

#4. Kumho Size Questions - from Ron Katona
Top
Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 21:34:14 -0400 From: "Ron Katona" <rkatona@bellatlantic.net> Subject: Kumho Size Questions Noticed a couple of you asking about Kumho sizes and fitment. I had the same questions a couple months ago and went with the smaller 225/45-17s as suggested by Steve Hazzard. My use is all autocross, but I can give some subjective and objective data here. The fit of the 225 is a no-brainer - it fits easily, but you knew that. The other sizes are going to be hit or miss and the taller Kumhos are probably going to rub somewhere. May not be a problem except at greater steering lock angles. Performance wise, unless you're competing in club racing or national level autocross, you'll never miss the extra tread with of the wider Kumhos. I find the 225/45-17 Kumhos to be an excellent autocross tire just a couple 10ths off the wider Hoosiers on asphalt. I save the Hoosiers for tour and ProSolo stuff, but the Kumhos go on for all the local events. The difference is small enough to be masked by driver error for most of us. At the track, I suspect that the narrower tires will be easier to drive and will give higher speeds on long straights at the expense of a small amount of cornering grip. Don't forget gearing as well: the taller Kumhos will give you taller overall gearing which may or may not hurt depending on the track. Here's some data from on board my car via a G-Cube on the same parking lot using Hoosier 245/40-17s and Kumho 225/45-17s: Hoosier Kumho Peak lateral G's: 1.23 1.17 Sustained Lateral G's: 1.16 1.09 Peak Braking: 1.20 1.14 Peak acceleration: 0.57 0.62 I believe the acceleration data as the Kumhos have a softer sidewall and come out of the hole better. The August issue of Grassroots Motorsports has a comparison of Toyo, Hoosier, and Kumho "R" tires including lap times with drivers of differing levels of experience. The Kumhos were just a tick slower than the Hoosiers and when the pressure was right, also fared well subjectively. -- Ron Katona

Ahmad, =20 I am using 4 245/45x17 Kumho's on the stock 7.5/8.5" combo on my 97 for SCCA AS autox. They rub on the rear fender every couple of events, but it is hardly noticible. I can get them to clear completly if I ran a little more camber. =20 They have a new Ecsta 700 in a 235/40 size that I will try as soon as they are in stock at tire rack. =20 Chris 97 M3/4 ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Ahmad <mailto:m3_racer99@hotmail.com> Lutfeali=20 To: E36M3 <mailto:e36m3@bmw-m.net> =20 Sent: Monday, June 25, 2001 1:15 PM Subject: [E36M3] Kuhmos 245/45/17 Vicor racer feedback please? The profile is kinda tall for a 245. Anyone running this? I will be using them on the 8*17 wheels I have. Any rubbing concerns? (245/40 GForce and Hoosiers run fine with my wheel setup but a higher profile was raising some red flags). Thanks in advance for the feedback. Ahmad

#8. securing my battery - from Jesse Caldwell

Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 20:51:50 -0600 From: Jesse Caldwell <Jesse.Caldwell@Colorado.EDU> Subject: securing my battery another idiot question from yours truly: my '96 came with a battery that doesn't fit the stock restraint (interstate, i think). the plastic "handles" that look like they would fit the bmw restraint are on top of the battery instead of the bottom, and since turning the battery upside-down isn't really a viable option, i'm looking for a good way to fix this. my ideas are: spring for a new battery. not on top of my list, since the battery is working fine. find a bolt that will allow me to use the handles on the top of the battery. i haven't had any luck thus far at lowe's. rig up something myself. anyone have any experience with the last option? at the last autocross here we stuffed jim's jeans around the battery, which kept the car from catching fire but didn't make jim's jeans look any better. now that you know how i approach car problems, you know why i'm asking for advice. :) i'd also be interested to hear from folks who have 3rd-party batteries that fit the bmw restraint. thanks, Jesse

With no further information, are we to assume you put the key in the ignition? #10. Re: [E36M3] Kumho Victoracer fitment - from Chris Teague

Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 20:04:20 -0700 From: "Chris Teague" <cteague@home.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Kumho Victoracer fitment Kris, You can run 245/45's on all 4 corners if you like. I do, and while the clearance is close in back, they do fit. You can also run 255/40's all the way around. You will be OK in front if you have lots of camber, and the proper wheel offset/spacers. In the rear though, you may need to roll the fenders, or live with some rubbing. I lived with some rubbing. Also, the 8.5" wheel is on the small side for the 255's. The 255 Kumho's are more than 10mm wider (~20mm if I remember) than the 245's. I would go with 17x9 on all four corners if you want 255's. Note that the 255/40's are not that much shorter that the 245/45's like the size would have you belive. I held them next to each other, I was amazed how close the diameter was. But they are *much* wider.
