Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 20:00:13 -0700 From: Roman <roman@arteuro.com> Subject: Rattling Exhaust Hi All, Sometimes I can hear what sounds like my exhaust rattle midship on my M. From reading some posts, I guess it is the exhaust pipe vibrating against the heat shield. Has anyone had a similar experience with there car? I can hear it when the car is at idle. Any cures for this problem? Cheers, Roman S.

I realize this isn't an answer, but on my M coupe, my R4S pads (front only in my case) squeal like a banshee most of the time, but if I take the car to the track, it's a couple of weeks before they start making noise again. And I've run them on my Miata for a long time without so much as a whimper. -Zandr -- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Aleksandr Milewski N6MOD n6mod@milewski.org http://www.milewski.org/

Hmmm .. I don't have the 6-speed, but I used to have MTL in my 5-speed, and after switching to Redline ATF I will never go back. I had all sorts of "balking" while on track with MTL, and none at all with ATF. Regards, -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com

#4. MORE: [E36M3] Tire Mounting Q&A - from Mel Silva

Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 22:10:09 -0500 From: "Mel Silva" <mel.silva@pdq.net> Subject: MORE: [E36M3] Tire Mounting Q&A Thanks Tom. I was not willing to take my M3 to the two shops I called that were listed on TireRack's site. The others are well into the 35 miles away zone, so I didn't call them. I got a couple of recommendations that I go to my local dealer with my new tires in hand and another half recommendation for Discount Tires. Can anyone provide more details on the Hunter Machine? This is my first time <grin> and I don't know yet what questions to ask the potential installer. What are the complications that require the Hunter Machine? Thanks in advance, Mel PS> I miss Joe at Custom Alignment in Mountain View. > > I don't know Houston, but Tire Rack has a list of installers on their > web site. This is true but don't take that as a wholesale recommendation from Tirerack. I checked out most of the shops that they have listed im my area and I didn't find one that I would trust with an M3 17 inch wheel - none of them had the proper equipment (the Tirerack sells a lot of 14,15 & 16 inch tires that anyone can deal with - thus the listings). A couple of them were bold enough to say they could mount 17 inch tires but hadn't done an M3 before - they were even confident enough to say they would be responsible for any damage. This still didn't build my confidence as their definition of damage to a wheel is likely different than mine (they were only charging $10-$15 per wheel) and it surely isn't worth the hassle of dealing with. I searched around and found a tire shop with the correct Hunter machine and even then they struggled. Good luck! #6. brake pad squeal - from Barrett Nicholas
Top
Date: 27 Jun 2001 22:48:25 CDT From: Barrett Nicholas <barrett.nicholas@usa.net> Subject: brake pad squeal Napa sells adhesive backed shim pads that I've found do a better job stopping squeal than any paint or spray on material, with the added advantage that the pads can be popped in right away. I have aftermarket 4 piston Brembo brakes on my 325i, so I can't say for sure Napa has them for a M3, since I've never looked for them there. For my brakes I went to a Porsche parts place online (can't remember/find name) and I've been told that Imparts also carries some made by Lucas (yikes - I'm scared to use any "prince-of-darkness" parts, even non-electrical ones, on my car!) hth, Barrett

#7. BMW Bash Site - from J. Eric Trela
Top
Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 00:33:18 -0400 From: "J. Eric Trela" <trela@cyberlogtech.com> Subject: BMW Bash Site I have to take exception with some of the things being said here about the author of the "BMW Site". While the author's position maybe a little extreme or over done, some of what he says strikes a chord with me. For instance, I was driving my "other car" today, which is a 97 Jeep Wrangler Sport and was wondering the following: - Why does my cheap and simple Jeep have a voltmeter and oil pressure gauge - but my expensive M3 doesn't? - Why does my American designed/made Jeep not have any problems with its strut towers or sway bar tabs when it is used for the purpose(s) for which it was built - but my German designed/made M3 cannot handle STREET driving with out problems or after thought reinforcements? Never mind actually racing it in some form. - Why do the stock shocks on my Jeep last 50K+ - but my M3 stock shocks only last -20K There is no doubt that BMW makes good cars, however, they SHOULD be better for the money. There are several common problems with the M3 that are unforgivable. Plastic under panels falling of M3's that are driven 100+ mph regularly - come on!

Paul, There's a rule in physics that says "two objects can't occupy the same space at the same time". Part of the E46 M3 exhaust system runs through where the spare would normally be, therefore it can't fit there. That's what I meant. While I agree with you (I'd rather have both), the spare-tire-in-a-can thing works pretty well, so it wouldn't bother me much. Personally, I've had a few flat tires, and the only time I resorted to changing it was because I didn't have "the can". In the other instances, I used "the can", even though a spare was available. As for this guy, what makes him sound so dumb is the fact that he bought the car and is now complaining about a feature that he knew (or at least should have known) before he bought it. It's like going to Wendy's, buying a bacon cheeseburger, and then complain about the bacon. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> To: "E36M3" <e36m3@bmw-m.net> Sent: Wednesday, June 27, 2001 10:55 PM Subject: [E36M3] ] BMW must be thrilled about this web site... > Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 22:55:18 -0400 > From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> > Subject: ] BMW must be thrilled about this web site... > > >>apparently he's just a little brat who has never owned > a car, that knows nothing about performance cars, the car business, > economics, or even physics (he can't seem to understanderstand that a spare > tire won't fit into the trunk because of the exhaust system). << > > Wait a minute....You seem to think that an understanding of physics would > lead you to the inevitable conclusion that people , if they had to choose, > would rather have 4 exhaust tips than a spare tire. That's all you need! Absolutely do not reinstall the single bar with the cross member. If you have a sensitive oneness with your car, you will detect a very slight improvement in stiffness during cornering.
