I am personally pretty safety orientated, anybody taking their car to the track should have roll protection. We do not require it, because that would deter most for coming to track events. It has been my experience (4 years now) that beginning drivers are more likely to crash than experienced ones. How many of these horror stories have you heard where it was the guy's first track event. In our club (CFRA) the only rollover we have had was a 1st time driver at Laguna. Sure others make mistakes, and eventually it will happen to you, but percentages go with the beginners. Especially those who panic when going off the track. Experienced drivers know their cars, and limits better than beginners, in theory anyway. Bill Lackey With that said, I have a really nice powder coated removeable x-brace Autopower bar for sale for $400 in Northern Ca. Are you ready to total the car, > have you taken all the necessary safety precations for when it does roll and > then hits a concrete wall? This is a great post, and everytime I see a wreck I remember that any of our "play time" can turn ugly really quickly. At my first school, an M3 chasing me and another student (also in an M3) made the same "two wheels in the dirt" mistake as this other driver and slammed into a wall at 90. This is why when me adrenaline gets up, and I _know_ that if I push a little more I can keep ahead of that S2000 about to pass me, I take a deep breath, back off, and let 'em go. When I see the cloud of dust and the S2000 facing me off the side of the track, I know I drove to my abilities and not to my ego's (true story, BTW). With everything that has been said about this however, when is it time to install a roll bar? Is it a certain frequency of events? A certain level you have reached in both your abilities and the groups you run with? As a novice who has already done 4 days of events this year, and plan on doing another 4-6, this is something I've had top of mind. I've watched a couple of cars wreck already. I am by no stretch of the imagination at 10/10ths out there, and I don't think I'm really doing events that frequently yet, but the whole concept of an accident is exactly that -- an accident. I know my wife would be ecstatic to see me drop in a roll bar, but when is it necessary or when are you simply going to look like a wannabe? How do you know that you've gotten to a point that a roll bar is something you really should be driving with? I'm really interested in people's thoughts... -peterg ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using HiSpeed Technologies Webmail. http://www.hispeed.com ************************************************************* List Commands UNSUBSCRIBE - (in subject line) unsubscribes you from the mailing list. Interesting, here it is just the opposite of that. Beginners are usually scared of the car and actually listen to the instructor. B and A students have enought seat time that they start thinking they have a grasp of the car and are too good for it to happen to them. And they are usually driving a car with a bunch of mods, r compound tires etc when they still should be in a bone stock, street tired car learning car control still. I am pretty sure that the last 7 M3s totalled here at Road Atlanta have been A,B students and/or instructors, one of them being yours truly, :~)))

I did some research on installation of Dinan suspension by Dinan-certified installers, and found that the labor rates actually varied widely here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Dinan itself, for instance, quoted me $100/hr, while SF BMW quoted me the ridiculous rate of $150/hr. In my old stomping grounds up north, BMW Seattle quoted me $85/hr. I have heard of reputable independent shops that will do it for less than $80/hr. So, while the parts may cost the same anywhere, it pays to shop around for a decent labor rate, in my experience. drew | 98M3/4 still stock suspension for now >-------------------- 5 -------------------- >Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 12:14:56 -0700 (PDT) >From: S Lafredo <slafredo@yahoo.com> >Subject: Re: Are Dinan prices fixxed through all dealers or negotiable? > >Yes, everything is fixed for the reason you mention in the last >sentence. While I think that "The Fast and the Furious" has the potential to be a very bad thing for legitimate amateur motorsports in this country, I really hate the knee-jerk reaction of some of the press. The implication that the movie had something to do with this crash because it was playing "nearby" is silly. As the article mentions, people have been drag racing there (and elsewhere) for along time. Why even mention the movie? Did they just leave the theater? Maybe we should burn some books while we're at it? Anyway... I am concerned about the public image of motorsports being damaged by this movie. Someone who doesn't know the difference between an autocross and a street drag race will lump all of those activities together. When enough people do that, finding venues to race on will become even more difficult. It doesn't help when the press links the movie to tragedies like this one. To the uninformed general public, an SCCA autocrosser is just another deadly "street racer." But I still can't implicate the movie in a death just because I don't like it. And this film was #1 in the box office this weekend.... sheesh. -- Ron Katona
