Date: Sun, 1 Jul 2001 10:21:25 -0500 From: "Mel Silva" <mel.silva@pdq.net> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Re: M3 Totalled at Summit I totally agree with and appreciate David's comments. These are the reasons I bought the M3 in the first place. So that I could have a reasonably quick street car that wouldn't drive me mad because it was ill handling and slow. I also promised my wife that I would not modify the M3 for track duty. She said "when you've paid for that car (the M3), then you can look at a dedicated race car that you can monkey with." So, the Mustang open track car went to the highest bidder and I have an M3 that I like to drive on the street, and is nice enough for me to give rides to clients in. Oh, and it has 4 doors. The best of both worlds in my opinion. I will get a track car eventually, if I can ever get employed again. Mel ;^/ Running out of money soon, D'oh! <snip> When you're in the "A" group or equivalent and you're feeling as if you simply must explore the limits (yes, we know who we are ;^ 0), you owe it to yourself, your spouse and your kids to do whatever you can to get a dedicated track car with cage, harnesses, etc. A "safety car", if you will. An E30 325 or even an E36 ti bobtail will do nicely for a relatively modest price. The old 325 will still outrun a stock E36 M3 if properly set up, yet still be streetable enough to drive to and from the track. Used race cars are cheap as BMW's go. And always, always wear a quality neck collar - it won't save your neck in a serious, crushing wreck, but it will help your skinny, little neck (they all are) hold up without injury under many other crash conditions. My neck wasn't even stiff after the high drama. At all. They work! Think about it. Dave Hogg M3/4 daily driver BMW used race car "Safety Car" on the track

I just saw the BMW flicks on Speedvision ( not the 'net) and being ignorant of most contemporary music, I wondered who does the vocal on The Follow. It poured down rain during the entire race. Bill Oberlen driving the Turner BMW had to start last from the pits because of a last minute engine change. But it was a marvelous performance by Bill as he worked his way to the front through a field of 45 cars! He finished first! =20 Great video - great race - great performance by Bill =20 Joe Dyer

#8. rear E36 windshield rattle - from Chris Papademetrious

Date: Sun, 01 Jul 2001 17:04:17 -0400 From: Chris Papademetrious <chrispitude@yahoo.com> Subject: rear E36 windshield rattle Hello everyone! I've got a 95 M3 with the dreaded rear windshield rattle. It appears to be the plastic shelf vibrating against the rear glass. Searching the list archives, I see some messages where people ask about it or explain what's causing it, but not a definitive fix. Has anyone gone up against this particular rattle... and won? If so, details on what you did would be great! - Chris

#9. Clutch Slave Cylinder Replaced at 20k Miles? Normal? - from DASGUNZZ@aol.com
Top
Date: Sun, 1 Jul 2001 18:37:03 EDT From: DASGUNZZ@aol.com Subject: Clutch Slave Cylinder Replaced at 20k Miles? Normal? Hi List, I just had to have my clutch slave cylinder replaced under waranty due to a leak at 20,800 miles. I have not heard of this happening to other M3 owners and am a bit worried. My clutch is fine so I don't think it can be from driver error, I do have experience with manual cars and baby my clutch most of the time. I bought my car as a CPO with 16k miles on it, it's a '99 M3. This is the second major problem I've had in the past 2 months. First the final drive resistor for the blower and A/C went bad and now this. Can somebody ease my worries and tell me what could have made the slave cylinder leak? Thanks in advance, Tommy '99 M3 NY Chapter CCA

#10. Anyone got one 245/40ZR17 MXX3 for sale? - from David Ripton
Top
Date: Sun, 01 Jul 2001 19:11:20 -0400 From: David Ripton <dripton@wizard.net> Subject: Anyone got one 245/40ZR17 MXX3 for sale? Last fall I ran over a large nail at speed and blew out my left rear tire. Nobody had the 245/40ZR17 MXX3s in stock at the time, but through this list I found someone who had one, and all was well. Until today. Stopped at a gas station to wash autocross numbers off my windows, and heard a loud hissing noise coming from my left rear tire. Another hunk of metal sticking through the tread. No exciting blowout this time, just a boring if somewhat fast leak, but the tire is ruined. (The tread was punctured right at the shoulder between the tread and the sidewall, so it's not patchable.) Tire Rack has the 235/40ZR17 MXX3s in stock, and on sale for only $165. No 245/40, though. Anyone got a single 245/40ZR17 MXX3 for sale? If not, I'll probably go with the 235/40 size. I think they should fit okay on the BMW 10-spoke 8.5" rims, since LTWs came with that configuration in the back. (I'd buy a matched set of two for the rear axle.) Thanks. P.S. If anyone sees someone leaving sharp metal objects on the road, please run him over for me. -- David Ripton dripton@wizard.net
