Despite auto manufacturer's best efforts at quality control, sub standard parts occassional make it onto vehicles. On a side note, this is most common during the first year of manufacture of a given part (or vehicle) as they learn the boundries of what effects the life or function of the part. Jeremy Lucas 95 M3

The springs are technically for 1996+ M3s, but will fit a 1995 model if you use the 1996+ struts hats (which can be purchased from a BMW dealer for less than $30 retail). I decided to sell this set-up rather than install it on my 1995 M3 as I am going with the full-race Turner Motorsports I-Stock suspension. #4. Parts Prices - Am I getting Ripped Off?1 - from shane.a.kleinpeter@accenture.com

Date: Mon, 2 Jul 2001 10:05:38 -0400 From: shane.a.kleinpeter@accenture.com Subject: Parts Prices - Am I getting Ripped Off?1 Hi everyone, Just a sanity check. After posting to the digest last week to save myself some time and money, I didn't get around to ordering my spark plugs and AC microfilter. Instead I drove the hour plus round trip to Hendrick BMW (my only choice for parts locally in Charlotte) and bought six spark plugs (the 4-post Bosch, forget the number exactly) and an AC filter. The plugs were $10.82 a piece with discount (regular price was over $12) and the AC filter was $20.50 with discount (regular price $26+). I gotta believe that these prices are higher than others are paying. And yes, I will order these parts from more reliable sources next time. Total bill for six plugs and a filter was close to $90, and I got to sit in traffic for about an hour and a half. Fun. But not as much fun as replacing the AC microfilter. Jeez, who designed that. I'm sure this was beaten to death when the car was new, but this is one poor design. I used Brett Andersons advice and did not remove the glove box, and the filter that was in there had been replaced at the Inspection 2 when I bought the car, but was still filthy. As for the plugs, a pretty easy job. Had to consult the Bentley manual to figure out how the coils come out. Of course, it didn't really tell me anything and I just started unscrewing every bolt I could find, which turned out to be correct. Good thing I have multiple spark plug sockets in the tool box, BMW has gone to a smaller size than was on my E28. Shane Kleinpeter <-- Bend over at the local dealer? Tarheel Chapter '96 M3

If I had known (or bothered to look into) this, I could have saved myself some money. The Discount Tire prices were within $5 of Tire Racks prices and they don't charge for mounting if you buy the tires there. You still have to pay for balancing and the disposal fee, but...I still could have saved myself about $50 after taxes http://www.discounttire.com/ if I bought the tires at Discount Tire. #6. Anyone got one 245/40ZR17 MXX3 for sale? - from Dorffer, Rich

If not, I'll probably go with the 235/40 size. I think they should fit okay on the BMW 10-spoke 8.5" rims, since LTWs came with that configuration in the back. (I'd buy a matched set of two for the rear axle.) I am guessing you have traction control on your car based on the wheel sizes you mentioned (correct me if I am wrong since you could have a 95 with staggered wheels/tires). Won't the 235/40 tire size potentially cause problems with the traction control or is a 1.3% reduction in rear tire diameter insufficient to be a problem? Just curious. Regards, Rich - Wishing I could have convinced a friend of mine that just removed his 75% worn 245/40/17 MXX3s rear tires with new Bridgestone SO-2s to keep them so I could have given them to the next person that ran into Dave's very problem. I thought he was going to and when I asked for them, he said he choose not to mess since they were dirty! doh!

On a vehicle with traction control, if you install shorter tires in the rear than in front, the ASC will engage at highway speeds. There have been reports of other list members with this problem. Installing 225/45-17 tires in front and 235/40-17 in back will cause this to happen. You need the same height tires all around, or, slightly taller tires in back. He was a great help in de-wussing" Thanks for the kind words Joe. I've been doing this a couple years so I've lost a lot of the butterflies in the stomach. Autocrosses are a great way to safely explore the limits of you and your car. Speaking for the car alone, the limits are very high. Don't get yourself into trouble on the street. Seat time is the best way to learn the vehicle. As always, I can sit in with you or vice versa. btw, tell your brother to join the CCA, I'd like to see the S2000 run. #9. Fan Breakage - from DiVincenti, A.J.

Date: Mon, 2 Jul 2001 10:21:15 -0500 From: "DiVincenti, A.J." <ADiVin@lsuhsc.edu> Subject: Fan Breakage This Sunday I did a time trial with the PCA on a short .8 mile road course. It was a blast while it lasted. Although my second and last lap was good enough for 4th fastest time, that's where the fun ended. While leaving the grid, there was a crunching sound followed by a coolant leak. It turned out that something got in the way of the fan and broke off about 5 blades. The broken fan pieces then punctured the radiator. What bothers me is that I can't figure out what caused the fan to break up. The track was clean so I don't think anything flew up into it, although it's possible. I have been running without any center underpanel, just the pork chops. The shroud is not scared nor is there any other evidence that the fan it something on the car. When I pulled the radiator out last night, however, I did see that the lower expansion tank hose was out of it's brackets and had a big gash across it. I'm not sure if this hose interfering with the fan was the cause or one of the effects. As you can imaging with five fan blades missing things were terribly out of balance. It's bothersome because I don't know what caused this. My best guess it that the hose jumped up into the fan. What do you guys think? Has anyone found a better than OEM radiator perhaps without a plastic neck. If not, what are some good sources other than the dealer. I remember this being mentioned, but it didn't apply to me at the time. A.J. DiVincenti
