#5. Sunday's autox and traction control - FYI - from Mdriver13@aol.com
Top
Date: Wed, 4 Jul 2001 09:48:51 EDT From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: Sunday's autox and traction control - FYI Well, it finally happened to me that last Sunday as I had to autox in a driving rain storm. My Heat happened to be at the end of the day when a huge T-storm moved through, sending the course workers for cover and causing two 15 minute delays. After that, no lightening...just rain. Well, the course was interesting and I was looking forward to battling a Corvette for BSP bragging rights. This guys has had it easy the last couple of years...little competition in BSP. So, I watch his first run...car all over the place (amazing what 350 HP and no traction control will do in 3 inches of standing/flowing water), ... time 58 and change. My turn, leave TC on (tell car to use its computer brain and I'll use what little brain I have) to make it through. Bingo, rear stepping out at various places through the course and politely stepping back in before the next set of gates. Sort of fun, but working hard too, harder than on a typical dry day in my opinion. Time...53 and change! .... Smile ;-)) Remaining runs just got better and the Vette got better too, but never in the game. As an afterthought, I should have tried a run without the TC on, just for a reference data point. I guess the rain water soaked too far into my head to think properly ;-)). Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion 1997 & 2000 #13 BSP 2001

#6. 95 M3 - benefits/drawbacks of staggered wheel widths - from Chris Papademetrious
Top
Date: Wed, 04 Jul 2001 12:16:33 -0400 From: Chris Papademetrious <chrispitude@yahoo.com> Subject: 95 M3 - benefits/drawbacks of staggered wheel widths Everyone, I hope this isn't a newbie question. I'm looking to gather advice on changing the wheels on my 95 M3. I have the opportunity to buy some BMW factory wheels from the later-model M3s with staggered sizes (7.5", 8.5"). My question is, how will these wheels work on a 95 M3? I know the suspension was changed on the later models, and I don't know if I'd be adding excessive understeer by doing this. Should I just stick with the stock sizes front and back? Comments from those who have been there would be appreciated! Thanks, and sorry if this is a FAQ. I did do some searching and saw posts which said it could be done, but none describing the advantages/disadvantages. - Chris

#7. More tire related inquiries - from Mel Silva
Top
Date: Wed, 4 Jul 2001 11:24:58 -0500 From: "Mel Silva" <mel.silva@pdq.net> Subject: More tire related inquiries After getting the new tires installed I noticed yesterday that in parking lot navigation mode, both left and right front tires are rubbing the fender liner somewhere in tight radius turns. The car has not been lowered to my knowledge (25 11/16" front 24 5/16" rear height measured from the garage floor to the fender lip). This can't be normal for a 225/45 tire, however, it does appear that the tires are very close to the front air dam/bumper cover thingy. In my other car I would interpret this as having every last degree of caster dialed into the alignment, but I don't know from M3's. Maybe the air dam has been pushed back. I also noted that my center section (under-tray?) of the bumper cover is gone, could this be the issue? Any ideas on what I can look for? Of course this is all moot unless I go get myself a new floor jack and jack stands. I sold my old one with the old car. Thanks, Mel

You should see arrows in the opening. They should point forward. If they are pointed backwards, it will move the whole wheel assembly forward and you'll have rubbing issues. This happened to a fellow list member a while back. #10. 95 M3 - benefits/drawbacks of staggered wheel widths - from nabli@attglobal.net

Date: Wed, 04 Jul 2001 13:22:23 -0400 From: nabli@attglobal.net Subject: 95 M3 - benefits/drawbacks of staggered wheel widths Chris, You will hardly notice a difference. Perhaps slightly more understeer at the limits of adhesion though I doubt most people can actually drive at that level consistently without getting into serious trouble. The staggered setup is not such an odd setup for a 1995 M3s BTW. The production version was model code 9520 which some of us might recognize as the M3 Lightweight. The lightweight did use different springs though but that is not likely to dramatically affect handling performance. But if you are really really weary about that difference you can splurge and go buy the lightweight (i.e., euro spec.) springs from the dealer. 31 33 2 227 422 Front W/Air (actually this is not the same spring as the lightweight since that car does not have A/C - which would change the spring part number to a 421) 33 53 9 064 881 Rear spring Cheers, Jim E.
