#1. 1221 update (where to buy O2 sensor?) - from Jonathan Evans

Gas mileage just went south in a big way and the car failed emissions testing today. 345 hydrocarbon reading compared to 120 a year ago. (220 is passing in NC). Sooo, without driving to Bosch in Anderson, SC and asking for an O2 sensor, where is the cheapest place to order one? Build date 7/95. I hope this is a DIY project so I can finally use the Bentley. I'll ask around for the special wrench, which I've seen advertised in BMP and such places. Thanks Jonathan "Polluter" Evans

But there's one thing that most kits/buyers fail to address, and that's the location of the light source of the new HID bulb. When installing HIDs into non-HID housings, it's beneficial to have the HID bulb's light source in the same location as the bulb it's replacing. Most HID retrofit kits don't offer this feature. I don't know if the kit below has this feature or not, so somebody who plans on purchasing it might want to ask the question. The 9006 HID kit that I have (made by Vision) does put the light source in the correct location. #3. How does one mount a front license plate? - from fesler@nsc.com
Top
Date: Thu, 5 Jul 2001 11:02:49 -0700 From: fesler@nsc.com Subject: How does one mount a front license plate? I received my first ticket with my nearly 1year old M3. Fortunately I wasn't driving. Unfortunately it was a fix-it ticket for no front plate. I had parked in a questionable parking location (at the end of an aisle in a supermarket parking lot) and when I came out the officer was writing the ticket. He said "If people park like this they will make paint the curb red." In other words, he didn't like my parking space but it wasn't illegal so he looked for something else to ticket me for...Bingo, front plate. So I need to mount a front plate. A couple thoughts: 1) Can I get away with temporarily gluing it on and taking care of the fix-it ticket and then removing it? 2) If not I guess I need a method that doesn't look ugly and doesn't damage the car. There is no obvious method for mounting on my car. Thanks, Eric

You said that you were parked on the supermarket parking lot. Isn't that private property? Can he ticket you for that? If I have an car with an expired inspection on my own property, they wouldn't be able to write up a ticket since it's not on the street. > So I need to mount a front plate. A couple thoughts: > 1) Can I get away with temporarily gluing it on and taking care of the > fix-it ticket and then removing it? This involves removing the trim without holes and installing the trim with holes and getting the necessary metal bracket and screws. The body nuts should already be present under the front strip. I agree that the bulbs are probably made to just 'twist in' to the factory housings with no mods, just like standard halogen bulbs. But what I'm wondering about is whether or not the 'xenon gas chamber' is in the same physical location as the filament of a 9006 bulb. > Question on your setup: did you use the US DOT-approved headlights or > get Euro lights? Original US-DOT housings. Nick

When I had a similar ticket on my Celica many years ago, the desk sergeant didn't even come outside to look at the car, although she could see the front of the car through the front door. > 2) If not I guess I need a method that doesn't look ugly and doesn't > damage the car. It replaces the bumper trim piece with the embossed "BMW" on it. (At least, there was for my previous 328is; the M3 is front-plate-less.) See ya, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4

What I did was simply remove the plastic cover under the grill (the one that says BMW), and tie the license plate with cable ties in a very botched and sloppy manner using the grill on the front air dam too and whatever else I could find. Then I went to a CHP station got it signed off, and when I got home removed the whole mess, put the plastic cover back on and voila! I don't know in your area, but over here, as long as you have a license plate and it's securely fastened, they don't care what it looks like... Date: Thu, 5 Jul 2001 14:34:51 EDT From: SWKAUF@aol.com Subject: Hawk Blues I remember seeing a thread on the Hawk Blues and the pros and cons. I think I remember that the 9012 compound was the one that was the best as far as stopping power for track events without severe problems with destructive dust. There are also HT8 and HT9 and (I think) another blue formulation. What are people's experience with these pads at track events? I already know they are entirely inappropriate for the street! Date: Thu, 5 Jul 2001 14:58:15 EDT From: Shelhart2@aol.com Subject: WTB: JTD or Racing Dynamics strut tower bruce I've recently installed the X brace and will be going with new front / rear sways (UUC most likely). I know most would say that strut tower brace is eye candy and I understand this ... That is why I don't want to pay $400 for a new brace. Please email me privately if anyone has one in good condition that will fit my 1998 M3 Coupe. Either polished or black. Would prefer JTD or Racing Dynamics. TIA.
