#2. suspension questions - from Steven Tom
Top
Date: Mon, 09 Jul 2001 10:18:18 -0700 From: Steven Tom <stom@qualcomm.com> Subject: suspension questions I'm going to be getting the H&R c/o soon and I have a couple of questions. 1. Does anyone have a installation instructions other than the Bently manual (I have the manual)? Possibly with pictures. 2. I understand that the only thing that I have to reuse on the front suspension is the strut hats. Should I just buy new ones so I don't have to deal with taking the assembly apart? 3. Do I need spring compressors to remove either the front or rear springs? I hear that the rears springs are difficult to remove. 4. I want to keep a 50/50 weight distribution. I plan on lowering the car only 1/2" evenly on all corners. Has someone corner balanced their car and found the drop on each corner to be significantly different? 5. I want to get the car aligned after it settles. How long should I wait? Should I just use the stock alignment settings? 6. Any other tricks/tips/hints for installing would be helpful. thanks, steve

#4. Oxygen sensor - from Jonathan Evans

Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2001 13:56:18 -0400 From: "Jonathan Evans" <jonathanevans@hotmail.com> Subject: Oxygen sensor I'm guessing that's not a 95 you're working on. I have no idea what "E5" means. And what does the order of the cylindars have to do with the O2 sensor? Please enlighten me, as I may need to change mine soon. Here's how I got rid of my check engine light (1221- oxygen sensor). This was as per the suggestion of the BMW tech: I disconnected the battery terminal leads and shorted them together. (the leads, not the battery terminals! doh!) Reset the DME and all is well now. We'll see if the O2 goes out of spec again, but it seems to be running well. Jonathan 95 m3

Date: Mon, 09 Jul 2001 14:18:33 -0400 From: Skip Bogard <skip.bogard@alumni.duke.edu> Subject: Re: [E36M3] 95 CD Changer problems To get the stuck disk out, this usually works: 1. Turn off car. CD changer will still have power available. 2. Eject cartridge (magazine). Assume one CD is still stuck in play position of player. 3. Take all CDs out of cartridge, making it totally empty. 4. Turn key until power is on for accessories (power to Head Unit) 5. Error message will appear "NO MAGAZINE" (remember we got "DISK ERROR before") 6. Insert empty cartridge while "NO MAGAZINE" error is displayed. 7. Listen to player reset then hopefully cycle through positions looking for CD to play (it doesn't always do this). It will give up then usually starts playing existing stuck CD. 8. Eject cartridge. Previously stuck CD will be returned to some slot in magazine. 9. Remove cartridge, take previously stuck CD out of magazine. This worked for me for a year and 1/2, until it got totally screwed up. Interestingly, Rocky Mountain Motorworks sells these. More interestingly, Rocky Mt. has a LIFETIME guarantee on their products. Think about it.... I've been thinking about approaching them for a group purchase of about 50-100 of these Alpine CD changers. And they in turn go order a bunch of these from BMW with the "Fix" for this premature ejaculation thing already in. I'm worried that if we don't get a big group, then they just selling existing stock which may or may not have the brain-dead players. Any ideas on how to get a player with a life-time warranty yet not drive Rocky Mt. into Chapter 11 in the process? They should be made aware of the risks involved and get assurances up front... that benefits us as well...less downtime. Anybody ever buy a BMW Alpine Changer knowing in ~ADVANCE~ that the changer they purchased had the necessary engineering changes to not swallow CD's and eject the cartridge, causing "DISK ERROR" ? - Skip Reid Conti wrote: > > Date: Sun, 8 Jul 2001 14:33:03 -0700 (PDT) > From: Reid Conti <reid@conti.net> > Subject: 95 CD Changer problems > > My '95 w/factory CD Changer is having changer problems. Date: Mon, 09 Jul 2001 11:51:38 -0700 From: Steven Tom <stom@qualcomm.com> Subject: Re: Oxygen sensor I have a 96'. The order of the cylinders are important because the code tells you if it is the O2 sensor for bank 1-3 or 4-6. The OBD2 cars also have pre and after cat sensors. Since the OBD2 cars are learning DME's then I don't know if unplugging the battery will work. To change the sensor is relatively easy and yours are located similar to where mine are precat. Invest in a stubby 22mm wrench it made the job easy. I believe the job took about 15 minutes not including set up time. You will need to remove both top engine covers to get to the O2 connections. steve At 01:56 PM 7/9/01 -0400, Jonathan Evans wrote: >I'm guessing that's not a 95 you're working on.
