#4. Jim C Intake questions - from Sean M. Burke
Top
Date: Mon, 09 Jul 2001 19:12:55 -0400 From: "Sean M. Burke" <sburke@columbus.rr.com> Subject: Jim C Intake questions My Jim C intake arrived today. Installation was pretty painless. It's an amazing piece of art considering the base material is fiberglass screen :) I would appreciate it if someone could answer a couple of questions for me: 1. The aluminium fitting on the ITG filter is currently resting against the 'bend' in the heat shield where it jogs inward a little bit. It looks like I can scoot the filter (and the whole intake) back a little bit to prevent this, but then the foam of the filter will rest slightly against the heat shield. Can anyone tell me exactly how to position the filter? My intake tube isn't long enough to shift it as far forward as most of the pictures I've seen of the unit show. 2. How much oil are you supposed to put on the ITG filter? The instructions say "a moderate amount", but it's pretty tough to gauge what that is. K&N filters are easy due to the white cotton/red dye. Also, does anyone else have concerns about the filtration ability of the ITG filter? The air passageways seem to be too large to filter out enough dirt. Thanks in advance --Sean '98 M3/4 -- "I swear I'm keeping this one stock" -- Me last year

#7. larger mass air sensor? - from HYPERM3@aol.com
Top
Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2001 19:52:19 EDT From: HYPERM3@aol.com Subject: larger mass air sensor? To all, I was wondering if anyone had experimented on a 96+ m3 by adding a larger mass air sensor? I am experiencing a lot of faults right now putting my check engine light on and my MAS made its own fault 57 times. This I actually have on a printout from the technician. To put things in perspective im running a supercharger and that might be why its not sucking in enough air. Either way, positive or negative feedback on this upgrade would be highly appreciated. Thanks, Alex "HyperM3" Demsky 97 SC M3

Hi, I think that the problem isn't so much that you need a larger HFM as it is the super charger. It's pulling in more air than the maximum threshold that the DME wants to see. If you exceed the HFM voltage then the DME will throw a code. There are a few options but they all complicate things. The best option is to use proper software in the DME, that's what it all comes down to in the end. You can trick out the DME to never see the high voiltage but then it won't be able to properly adjust the A/F. You can use a bigger HFM and injectors but then the timing will be off unless the software is changed. Really, you should talk to the company who designed your SC kit. It's their responsibility to make sure that you don't have this kind of problem. BTW, it would also be nice to use a larger HFM since the stock one is quite restrictive at the flow rates that you are using. -Matt --- HYPERM3@aol.com wrote: > Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2001 19:52:19 EDT > From: HYPERM3@aol.com > Subject: larger mass air sensor? > > To all, > I was wondering if anyone had experimented on > a 96+ m3 by adding a > > larger mass air sensor? #9. OBD1 Codes - from Ron Buchalski

Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2001 03:20:58 From: "Ron Buchalski" <rbuchals@hotmail.com> Subject: OBD1 Codes What's the difference between OBDI codes 1221 and 1222? Looking at: http://www.bonnevillemotorwerks.com/fault.html The codes are labeled EGO Sensor #1 (1221) and Lambda Control #1 (1222). Looking at the Bentley manual, it seems to indicate that 1221 will be set if the DME doesn't receive the O2 sensor signal, while 1222 will be set if the signal from the O2 sensor is out of range (beyond a lean or rich limit preset in the DME). Is this correct? Thanks, -rb _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
