I have Cardfax for another month or so, and was wondering how one gets the entire report to print (e.g. from IE 5.5) ... All I get is the first page inside a scrollable frame ... #6. Stethoscope for car? - from Steve Lilley

Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 20:33:42 -0400 From: Steve Lilley <m3steve@earthlink.net> Subject: Stethoscope for car? Is there such a thing as a stethoscope for use with the car? I'm trying to track down a noise (a grinding or rubbing sound) in the front steering or suspension (not the swaybars this time), and I can't get close enough to pinpoint the noise (especially with the engine running). If I had some kind of audio probe that would let me listen to different areas of the suspension/engine bay, I'm sure I could track the problem down to a particular component. Any ideas? My brother-in-law is a doctor; I wonder what he'll think when I ask to borrow his stethoscope!?!? (Mental note: keep it away from the fan blades.) Regards, Steve m3steve@earthlink.net

An Exxon station that is walking distance from my house has done this type of work on other vehicles for me. And I am in need of two rear tires for my car. Thanks.<< Be very careful....There's a service station near me who has done all my previous tire work, and whos even a Tirerack recommended installer. But when it comes to our wheels and tires, forget it....Even though he has a good hunter 17" machine, he cant break the bead on our Pilot Sports in our size. Make sure hes' done it before, before you let him try...If he says hes never done one, but he's sure he wont have any trouble, head for the nearest door. --------------------------------------------------------- Paul Elliott '99 White M3; < 30K miles; Dinan stage II sc kit; Rotex pads; Steiger SS and Clutch Stop; Sound by Polk, Excelon, JLAudio

#8. Re: [E36M3] Re: Sway Bars - Advice and Input - from Chris Teague

Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 20:17:00 -0700 From: "Chris Teague" <cteague@home.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Re: Sway Bars - Advice and Input Neil, You may not think that the 22.2 mm Dinan bar can have the same effective rate as a 27mm bar, but here are my calculations: Stock Arm Length: 8.25" Longest Dinan Length: 7.25 Shortest Dinan Length: 5.39 So the Dinan is not quite 1/2 as short, but getting there. If you do use the shortest length, the end link is at a fairly severe angle. I use the 3rd hole that is 6.01" long, about 2 1/4" shorter than stock. The angle is not that bad. From Fred Puhn's "How to Make your Car Handle" book, the formula for sway bar stiffness is: K=(500000*D^4)/((0.4244*A^2)*B + 0.2264*C^3) Where K=stiffness in in-lbs A=length of bar arm in fore-aft direction B=length of straight part of bar (32" for the M3) C=length of bar arm along the direction of the arm D=diameter of the bar You are correct that the diameter is to the fourth power. For my 23mm stock bar, that gives: 311 in-lbs. For a 27mm stock length bar, that gives: 592 in-lbs For a 22.2mm bar on the full stiff Dinan setting, that gives: 655 in-lbs. With my 3rd hold setting, it is: 524 in-lbs. So full stiff is actually slightly *stiffer* than the 27mm bar. I admit all the length measurements I made may not be perfect, but I think that as you can see from the formula, the arm length can make a big difference. And I have all this in an Excel spreadsheet. I can e-mail this to anyone who wants to play around with the numbers. Chris 97 M3/4 P.S. If anyone has any lever length numbers for other bars, send them on. I am curious about others who may have Dinan bars if they measure like mine. ----- Original Message ----- > Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 14:07:31 -0500 > From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> > Subject: Re: Sway Bars - Advice and Input > > on 7/12/01 1:05 PM, Matt Henson <hensonator@yahoo.com> wrote: > > > Neil, > > To get a higher spring rate, one would want to decrease the arm length. > > Yeah I really do know that, see my previous correction post.
