I had the intermittant/dead speedo/odo problem for a while too. I got sick of it (especially when it finally died permanently) and had it fixed, which involved replacing the console - not cheap. At least the dealer went half on it with me, as I argued a speedometer is not exactly a wear item that should die at 60k miles. - rob

I > have no experience with it > but I met someone that used to put a bottle in with > 92 pump gas just before > getting to the track. > > -Bobby I was already a guinea pig in this area, so let me relate my experience. I have a 95 M3 with a Conforti chip. During hot weather, I always used to get pinging (and I used to live in Las Vegas, so there was plenty of 'hot'.) Anyway, I got in the habit of dumping in a bottle of "104+ Octane Booster" pretty regularly--every other tankful or something, because it seemed to alleviate most of the pinging. Well, it wasn't long before I started to notice an intermittent hesitation in my throttle response. Then it progressed to a "stagger", where the car would literally buck during acceleration. Finally, I actually had it die in traffic a couple of times. The engine would restart and run normally, but then the problems would always return. I took the car in for inspection and my mechanic pulled all the spark plugs--and found them all badly fouled. I replaced the plugs, quit using the octane booster, and haven't had a problem since. That was four years ago. All I'm saying is constant use of the stuff probably isn't a good thing. The occasional bottle before an autocross or driving school would probably be okay. ----------------------------------end Cod Major Chris Darling HQ AMC/CEXR DSN 779-0698, Comm (618) 229-0698

"Borrowed" this info from a message board, so I can't vouch for the reliability... There should be more info elsewhere if it's true: "Ahead of the Sear Point ALMS race, Joachim Stuck, BMW's star driver from Germany will be making a very special appearance on Wednesday: at 11 o'clock, as part of a publicity stunt, Stuck will set out to cross the Golden Gate Bridge in the BMW M3 GTR and then drive through the streets of San Francisco. I'm not sure where exactly, but if you are in the area, you may want to check it out. Don't forget the camera!!" OK, let me see if I understand this - you're jamming it into second gear as fast and hard as you can *and* you're not fully releasing the clutch. And now you're surprised the synchros are showing signs of crapping out? > Is this the second gear synchronization losing the battle with time? No. It's losing the battle with gross mechanical abuse. These gearboxes have - well, in your case "had" - amazingly strong sychros, witness their allowing a driver to mis-shift into second or even first gear at high speed without much in the way of protest. > Will it get worse? Well it sure ain't going to cure itself... > Is the tranny mount bushing doohickey designed to prevent this? How about > the x brace rubber piece that I forgot to install? BMW has them in stock, although your dealer probably won't. My cost is $15.35 after discount - I ordered a pair. I then called my insurance agent who told me to call the claims office who told me to call my insurance agent. After that run-around, I decided that the claims adjuster would take one look at the seats, harnesses, coil-overs, etc., and deny the claim anyway. I'm going to take the BMW parts to the race shop next week and just see how much it will be to cut and paste. If it's within $100 of my deductible, I won't even go through the hassle of dealing with the insurance company. BTW, P/Ns are: 41 14 8 169 027 (driver side), 41 14 8 169 028 (Passenger side), reference #'s 16 & 17 on the "Floor Panel Trunk/Wheel Housing" diagram. -- Ron Katona ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ron Katona" <rkatona@bellatlantic.net> > OK, plan "B." > > Looks like a fix using a cheap fabricated part, even maintaining the > stock mounting location, geometry, and mounting hardware, is illegal in > the SCCA SP rules.
