It's 6 days before OFest and on the way home tonight in traffic my Oil Pressure light comes on.......DAMN! Luckily, an Exit was right in front of me and I coasted into a Gas station. Oil level fine, spun the Oil cap off, no smoke, checked underneath, no leaks..... Ok lets just turn her over for a few seconds....Damn! The thing sounds like a Diesel...shut it right off, grabbed a tow and left it at my dealership... Background on the car... 98 Sedan...68K all highway.....a couple track schools, and 30+ Autocrosses.... No symptoms beforehand...no noise, no vibration, nothing........... in fact after the light came on their was no vibration either....I doubt any engine damage was incurred.... So it sure looks like a oil pump..... Thoughts from you folks? How is the Oil pump driven BTW? Anyone else have an Oil pump go? Thanks in advance, Steve

Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 19:40:34 -0700 From: Peter Fanning <p.fanning@verizon.net> Subject: Re: Source for Euro Floating Rotors? I have to disagree with Bob's comments. I find the floating rotors work great. I drive very hard and have worked on my braking technique. Even before improving my braking I found the floating rotors to resist warping better than one-piece. I order them from Nick Alexander imports (800-800-NICK, ~$108 per rotor), have them drop shipped to cryo-one for treatment (~$20 per rotor) and have smooth trouble free rotors until it's time for replacement due to wear (thickness and radial fissures). I think this debate has raged over the last couple of years about proper braking technique, high-temp fluid, track pads, floating rotors and cryo treatment. Proper fluid, pads and treated floating rotors helped me a lot as I worked on my braking. #3. New 3 series? - from Luis Veras

Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 21:36:24 -0400 From: "Luis Veras" <veras@tricom.net> Subject: New 3 series? According to this website http://www.bmw.com/bmwe/products/special/ there is a new 3 series coming for 2002. Is this a completely new model? (ie. E56?) By looking at the pictures it doesn't seem that much different, but the differences are somewhat noticeable. Isn't this unprecedented for BMW? Don't they usually leave a generation at least 6 years? Maybe I'm missing something. Also, the 3 series compact looks very different to the current (and the 2002?) model. Previous 3 series compacts look very similar to the normal 3 one, but not this time. Is the front of the new 3 series compact a glimpse of the next generation 3?

I had my rotors cryo treated and I expected that the cryo treatment would allow the rotor to be a lot more durable due to the refinement of the microstructure and the releif of residual stresses. Also, I had mine slotted to allow the rotor to wipe the fire band away from the pads. Thus without the premature cracking & pad wear that occurs with cross-drilling. For those of you who have run before and have printouts, this will be a chance to run with the latest software and to check if there's been any change since your last data pull. AFR/Lambda will be plotted along side horsepower, torque and acceleration (g's). A Porsche we ran this morning pulled 582hp at the wheels with 18psi boost. It really is just a minor face lift, like the 5's will be getting soon. The 7 series is all new starting next year (Q1 2002).
