Taiwanese makers were selling bars for $250 retail. The design didn't seem to matter to most buyers - it was just the cost. I've got one on my 97 M3/2 and it actually feels lot better than the Dinan bar I had on originally. And no, there isn't a clearance problem with the hood. There's just a slight indentation in the insulation, maybe 1/16". - Bob -----Original Message----- From: Greg Cernosek [mailto:gcernosek@inetx.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 08, 2001 10:32 PM To: E36M3 Subject: RE: [E36M3] Strut Barbarian Date: Thu, 9 Aug 2001 00:17:31 -0500 From: "Greg Cernosek" <gcernosek@inetx.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Strut Barbarian If you find out anything on this, please let me know. Is there anything I need to know about continuing to use this product on my '99 M3?? I have had no response from UUC themselves on this question. Thanks, DB -It hasn't been on the site for a long time. I would only guess that so many people had complained about its bulkiness (hood clearance problems) and UUC got more returns on the item than was profitable. I have an OBDI car w/out the traction control and there are no clearance issues. It is a beefy unit and I'm not worried about warranty issues in terms of the thing bending. In May I was sideswiped by a Honda and the body shop said the brace probably prevented the shock tower from moving b/c the car was straight when they put it on the 'Rack'. What did bust was the Bilstein strut. On the other hand, I had a Maxima with the Stillen brace and I was T-boned on the driver's side and the bar bent. It is not as sturdy as the UUC brace. In fact, the mount of the brace was very thin and it had heim joints on it. I don't think you'd have to worry about the bar bending. It is possible though that bolts can become overstressed but I highly doubt it. Ed Tang 95 Cosmos M3 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Is there anything I need to know about continuing to use this > product on my '99 M3?? I have had no response from UUC themselves on > this question. I believe that UUC discontinued this product some time ago, apparently for economic reasons - the design was too expensive to make, as I heard it. A few people had minor fit problems (height interfering with hood closure to varying degrees) on early models, but that got fixed. (Pause for Chester to jump in here!) IMO it is an outstanding strut brace. I bought one even though I already owned a different brand. (I like the JTD brace too, but they don't make that one any more either.) A little anecdote. A couple of months ago I pulled a bonehead maneuver in a mall parking lot, and drove out from behind a parked car right in front of a lady in a Buick Park Avenue. Her car hit me on the front wheel, crunching the fender and hard enough to bend the control arm. There was also enough impact to bend the shaft of my front Koni near the top and to require replacement of the bearing hat. Despite this there was no distortion or movement of the sheet metal strut tower itself, although these are known areas of weakness in BMWs. The car's structure measured completely true. My body shop's opinion is that there was no way my strut tower could have survived unscathed without the reinforcing effect of the brace. I see two mechanisms at work here. One is that the very solid strut plates of the UUC brace clamped and braced on top of the tower simply want to resist any movement. The other is that the brace's crossbar spreads the load to the other side's tower as well. (Of course there could be a possible downside to that last point: if you got hit hard enough then possibly both sides would get damaged instead of just one.) In any case, I got away with just bolt-on part damage (fender, bumper cover, grille surround, turn signal, control arm, strut, hub and kingpin - plus paint). BTW, it's amazing how much shop work $4000 doesn't buy anymore... Bottom line: that UUC brace paid for itself. Neil 96 M3 - fully restored to its former glory
