#2. How to: Compression test - from david kroth

Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 09:45:36 -0700 (PDT) From: david kroth <david_kroth@yahoo.com> Subject: How to: Compression test What do you do with the ignition system during the compression test? On a conventional, one coil, system you can connect a spark plug to the coil wire and ground it so the ignition is loaded normally. What do you do with BMW's one coil per plug setup? I suppose you could set a code in the OBC which would keep the spark from firing... ===== David Kroth david_kroth@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Check the level when the motor is cold, like first thing in the morning. There is a "cold level" mark on the bottle; top it off if necessary. Hope that helps, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4

To remove the spark plugs, you have to remove the coils. Technically, you can dismount the coils without unplugging them. But it's really easy to just undo the connectors and get the coils out of the way. Thus, you've eliminated any spark from firing. You'd also remove the fuel pump relay, which is next to the fuse box (under a little plastic cover). I'm fairly certain that the noise is timing chain slap cause by worn tensionsers. Now is it the top or bottom tensioner that usually goes bad? Should I just replace the bottom one since it is an easy fix and hope for the best. A.J.

#7. [E36M3] Rear Shock Removal? - from twisty M3

Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 14:39:36 -0700 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: [E36M3] Rear Shock Removal? Major brain freeze right now, so I can't remember where I've seen these instructions (I know... I'll pick up a Bentlely manual soon), but does anyone have a link to rear shock removal? I just need to remove the rear Konis to bump them up to a firmer setting (one turn is a bit bouncy in the rear). It looks like a straight forward procedure. Do you just loosen the top, loosen the bottome bolt and just pull 'em right out? Should the suspension be loaded/unloaded, wheels on/off? Also, when putting them back in, is there a torque spec on the bolts, and I assume you don't need an allignment from simple removal/replacement of shocks only? Thanks!!
