I read a few posts that people have gotten them from here. I called and talked to a rep. He told me that they are "GENERIC and made in Taiwan". Their website states "PHILLIPS REAL H.I.D. SYSTEM". Are the phillips products (ballasts) made in Taiwan? Any information on this company and/or product will be useful. Any information on any other HID kit will also be welcomed. I need an H1 kit for my Euro Ellipsoids. Thank You In Advance Bill P

From what I've read so far, the only reason these are even being offered is to meet the ALMS homologation rules which require offering for sale and having brochures and price lists. I don't think they are required to actually sell any which are street legal. Feel free to correct me here, all. This GTR is a full race car which I believe to be targeted at the other racers much like the Porche GTR, not the general public. Being available to the 'public' and actually selling any is quite a different thing. I'm actually 1st on the GT list at my dealer based on speculation 2 years ago when I thought the GT would be like the LTW, not the race version. The $175k difference is a little out of my league, maybe $170k or so. Based on some previous articles, etc. I don't think the market for that car is the street driven customer any more than it is for the Porsche GTR and Corvette GTR versions. It's being done entirely for homologation and may never sell one to the public, only other racers. Those are an H&R part. (and if you call H&R asking for custom rate shocks, you get revalved inserts to slap into your housings. ) BTW, H&R coilovers + no rear coilover adjustors = 2" lower than stock in the rear, which is A LOT. I'd actually be interested to get measurements of ride heights from other people... measure from the top of the wheel well ache to the bottom of the wheel itself, assuming you're running 17" wheels. (if you're not, just let me know what size wheel you're running. -kit, who has to get off his butt and call H&R for his new rear ride height adjustors... The whole point of the E30M3 was to > create a no-holds-barred, barely street legal, racing version 3-series. That's > what always excited me about that car. But evolution happened. Actually, I hate to break it to you, but the E30M3 was built and sold for homologation rules as well. When they wanted to improve it (for racing) they also had to sell those models too (in volumes of 500). Over the years, the minimum number of production cars has dropped drastically (although Touring Car rules are still pretty high, I think), such that it now must just be available for public purchase. Also, it was hardly a no-holds-barred 3-series, but fit tightly within what the rules permitted (and BMW wanted to spend). > When the E36 came out, they got away from this a bit. But you're willing to > overlook it for the fact that better the S50US then nothing at all. Then they > made a sedan -- an automatic! -- and a convertible. The car is still extremely > powerful and great handling, a magnificent car or we all wouldn't have bought > it, but they started to dilute the brand. Ah, here is the critical point, that they learned from the first M3 that they could actually sell these cars in pretty high numbers (unlike the original batwinged 3.0CSL, which they never tried to sell). BUT, this car was built for the market (Europe and US), not the track. As such, they built it so they could make money on them. Just look at the LTW, which was more along the lines of what so many people CLAIM they wanted, and yet NO ONE bought it. (except my family and friends, which got something like 10% of them). Even I wouldn't buy it for what it cost (MSRP was well below program cost). > Now we have the E46M3. If you listen to the automotive journalists, it's the > best thing since sliced bread. I don't believe it. It's hot and all, but it's > still a luxo-barge. A damn fast one, but not what the name stood for in the > beginning. But standards change, otherwise the benchmark would still be a mustang GT (like it was for the E30) and not a 996 911 or an S4 or F50 (insert your version of the competition). > And now we have the GTR. With this car in existence, the M3 is no longer the > ultimate 3-series. May as well call it what it is -- the 332csi -- and let the > GTR have the M3 name. But this is apples to oranges (sorta, bear with me). Did the existence of the Evo3 take away the "M" from the original E30M3s? Of course not, but it did kick its but (and we couldn't get that here, either). Remember the GTR isn't really a volume car, not at that price. > Maybe I'm over-reacting a bit, but it just sounds silly to me to have the M- > car, and the M-car Deluxe. For the past 15 years BMW has been building up the > M-badge to mean the best, the ultimate BMW. By releasing the GTR and not > simply upgrading the existing M, the M-badge just means pretty damn good. I would argue that M is really more of a brand (like BMW), with many model offerings. It clearly has evolved over time from being the penultimate of any single BMW series to becoming a series unto itself. > Just my $0.02. > > -peterg I like your opinions. Personally, I thought the LTW was a waste of time, and totally missed the boat (needing more power and LESS weight). If they built it to my specs, they would have sold one...to me! Unfortunately, too much of automanufacturdom is to build the lowest common denominator (cater to the masses). At least BMW does less of this than Oldsmobuick or Nissoyonda, but more than Porarrari, which cost much more. Since we all like back seats and trunks and prices under $100k (our own personal version of making compromises), BMW is the best choice. Dan

According to the latest issue of "Sport Compact Car" (or better know as Civics 'R Us), the new 2002 NSX will actually be more "stylish" and have more power than the current offering. I don't know what that really means, other than they can't be losing too much money or they wouldn't be building another generation.
