Pretty damn impressive. Max horsepower area seems to be moved up by less than 500 rpm, for a peak power gain of better than 45 hp without losing anything lower down. Torque is improved throughout the rev range too, although that slightly funky area between about 2200 and 3500 rpm now looks much funkier. Maybe some kind of intake resonance? Should we assume that "stock" means bone stock, whereas "Cam System" is the full monty with emphasis on the "system": i.e. cams, JC software (duh!), cold air intake. Maybe bigger injectors too to keep the PWM duty cycle reasonable? OK, yes, as a matter of fact I am drooling. (BTW: the backslash in the link above should be a forward slash.) Neil 96 M3

The highlight was the cross-country drive (Chicago-San Jose) with a nice climb to the top of Independence Pass (13k elevation, very cool) and continued high-speed run over highway 50 through Utah and Nevada. With a straight road, and 100 mile visibility, you can drive whatever speed you want... :-)) ...the E46M3 feels as tight at 130 (and quiet too!) as the E36 did at 90 (never mind about the E30-and yes, I have several thousand track miles on one, and >20,000 track miles on E36s). I am a little disappointed with the closeness of the exhaust tips to the back of the bumber but I love the sound of the exhaust. (Greg's newer exhaust tips are much better placed a fraction of an inch further away from the bumper. Much better) Anything under 2500 is a bit loud and resonates badly in the car. My suggestion and remidy is to keep the RMPs above 2500;) I also have noticed a bit of a shimmy in the morning when I get up to highway speeds. I do have new Springs and Stock/Struts (Eibach/Koni) so the theory on old shocks/struts does not hold up. I am going to have my front rims checked. Maybe they are bent? I have used the Stand 21 outside seam gloves for over 5 years. They are very comfortable, give excellent feel, and cool (not sweaty). Personally, I like them much better than driving bare handed! I don't know the price (purchased from Northstar Motorsport), and whatever you buy, make sure the cuff extends over your suit for sufficient fire protection. Dan S. PS: on the helmet issue, make sure you like wearing it for 40 minutes (or more). If you feel any pressure points during 5 minutes, you have the wrong size/model. The overall shape varies from manufacturer to manufacturer (just like shoes), and this is the biggest reason for my personal hatred of certain models. (yes, I have a big head) Also, if you plan to race (or go to a pro-school), get the SA rated model, Nomex is just one brand of fire-proof material.

I take your point, but I specifically selected the US M3 as it is assumed that most of those on this list knocking the E46 M3 are themselves driving a US spec E36 M3. >2. the stiffer chassis is actually supposed to be lighter, according >to reports I heard. i.e. E46 chassis (i.e. bare metal) is lighter >than an E36 chassis. it's just better designed to the point of being >stiffer and lighter. Though I would not be surprised and would almost expect this to be the case, I have not seen it stated by BMW or anywhere in there technical manuals. If it is the case then it would even further bolster the point that the new M3 is an improvement over the previous generation US or Euro version M3. >3. the Euro E36M3 had a 6 speed transmission. see pt 1. see above response to 1st point >4. bigger brakes, wheels, etc can't add that much (I give you 50lbs at MOST) Without getting into a tit for tat nit pick fest let me put it another way. The weight differences of the E46 M3 and the E36 didn't come from navigation or the handful of additional E46 M3 available options. >so I have no doubt that the E46M3 is a luxo barge, although extremely >fast. As I have said before this is history repeating. If you go over to the E30 M3 digests you will find people right now saying the same thing about the car that you are driving. Remember when it comes to weight it really isn't that hard to take parts off of a car or to simply not order excess luxury options in the first place. > I would appreciate it, however, if people would stop comparing >it to the US E36M3. > there is no point -- compare it to the Euro There really is a point when those pointing the finger are driving the US E36 M3, but since you asked lets break it down (E46 vs Euro E36)...... -stiffer chassis -better engine -better brakes -better suspension (shocks, springs, swaybars, bushings, etc) -better differential -better SMG when it arrives -flared fenders that will fit better wheel and tire combinations -better aerodynamics including a more durable front air dam -better exhaust (that 40% less back pressure is a comparison to the Euro Motor) -out of the box significantly more race potential than an E36 Euro or US M3 -better traction control (not that I really care cause it is always switched off ) -though likely to offend the average self labeled purist/disciple of M3 heritage correctness - significantly higher quality interior and exterior component construction. >E36M3. has the motor come that far since the Euro E36M3? I dunno. When you get a chance you may want to ask one of your mechanics at the dealer to loan you their copy of BMW's "E46 M3 Technical Reference Manual" so that you can learn exactly how far the engine has come from the previous generation M3 motor. You will need to get a copy of the Euro Technical Reference Manual or BMW's somewhat un-obtainable "E46 M3 Course Contents/Background Material" manual to get a fully delineated view of Euro E36 vs E46 motor comparisons. It isn't like the engineers at BMW Motorsport who brought us the E30M3 and Euro E36 M3 said "hey ask the guys who work in engine management to crank up the rev limit by 400rpm" In fact, quite the opposite, upon closer study it appears that they left no stone unturned when developing the next generation M motor. Think about it.....8000rpm on a civilian released in-line 6 cylinder motor......a thought that until very recently was simply unthinkable! >How do the cars compare on the track? I dunno. Do you really think that the guys at Motorsport would spend millions and millions of dollars on research and development designing a slower less capable M3? Picture this.... Hans Stuck climbs out of the E46 M3 after a few test laps at Nurburgring and says to the BMW engineers "Nice work guys, it is so much easier to enjoy the scenery at a slower speed, I never realized how pretty the track is when you have a chance to really get a good look at it. I can't wait to take it out grocery shopping. Really, that E36 M3 was just a little bit too fast for my liking. Thanks." >now, I have no doubt I would love to drive an E46M3, and will happily >turn my E36M3 in for one. I see it as a natural evolution to me in >what was the best all around usable car. This will become an even more poignant experience when you have a chance to become completely acclimated and familiar with the new M3 from actual driving experience and then get an opportunity to hop back into an E36 for comparison. If at that point you still are inclined to use the term "luxo barge" then I will happily stand-by and accept your informed criticism. >btw, any chance we can get a dyno run of a Euro E36M3 motor vs an >E46M3 motor? :-) If someone has one send it over as I have a dyno of my car which put out ~346hp stock. #9. road construction, bent wheels, yelling at the city. - from Reid Conti
Top
Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2001 14:28:18 -0700 (PDT) From: Reid Conti <reid@conti.net> Subject: road construction, bent wheels, yelling at the city. Good afternoon... Today, while driving back to the office on a work-related outing, I came upon an intersection where the road was crowned a bit ahead of me.. when I was approximately halfway thru the intersection at 30mph (And too late to hit the brakes), the road dipped back down the other side of the crown, and I could see there was a lane missing from the road. That's right, missing. The city decided to cut the asphault out of the road on the far lane, leaving a very nasty 3" lip with no ramp or anything. Again, because of the crowning of the road, it wasn't visible from the other side. There were no cones, warning signs, work crews or anything. Well, there was an extremely hard impact, but no flat tires, so I drove back to the office to examine the car. The left side seems fine, but on the right side, both wheels are slightly bent (stock 95 motorsport wheels) and my right front tire has a nasty bubble on the outside sidewall corresponding with the bend. They were most definately not there earlier in the day. I went back to the scene to take pictures an hour and a half later. By this time, work crews were on the scene. They were spraying tar in the missing lane (so my shoes got nice and sticky, as did my dead pedal on the way back to the office again, and a bit of a dark patch on my floor mat..) and had cones and a "bump" sign setup. However, the cones were warning the cross traffic not to merge into the missing lane, there were no cones at the intersection, and only the bump sign was present. I know 100% that neither the cones nor the bump sign were there when I went through. I took pictures, and it was very easy to leave out the bump sign and the cones, as they were not too visible from that direction anyhow. The pictures very clearly show the large lip and the fact that it's basically invisible from the opposite side of the intersection. I plan to yell very loudly at the City of Seattle and see if I can get them to fund a new pair of tires for the front and, at the very least, get 2 wheels straightened. I want to get them to agree to look at the situation, then get BMW of Seattle to inspect the tires/wheels and make sure that only the 2 wheels with visible bends are actually bent, and make sure no other tires are damaged (Especially my rear S03PP's that I bought 2 weeks ago). Anybody have any advice? I think I'm in a pretty good situation as far as these types of things go, as it is a road construction project. They very deliberately cut the road apart, left it terrible shape, and didn't mark it as a construction area. Furthermore, my car is 100% stock so they have nowhere to go with that. I'm hoping they're somewhat receptive to footing the bill, because I'll be even more pissed than I already am if they refuse. I'm just hoping someone has some experience with this, can let me know what my chances are, and some ideas as to how to put this whole thing together. Reid, I don't know about Seattle but I've heard good results with this sort of trouble in other parts of the country. Don't be surprised if you have the deal with a contractor instead of the city.
