I have a K&N factory-replacement air filter in the airbox with the baffle removed, and 2. I run a molybdenum disulfide additive in the differential fluid and the engine oil. The advantages of MoS2 have been known by the hauling/heavy machinery industries for many years. There was a noticeable improvement in fuel economy when I added MoS2 to the diff/trans fluid and crankcase oil in both my cars (2-4mpg), along with faster cold-weather cranking and a quieter idle. The downside is that it's expensive, but it actually makes me money (pays for itself and them some) over the course of each oil change. I order my MoS2 at: http://www.netside.com/~parsec/index.htm The product you want for crankcase oil is Spica Gold (I order the 5-gal buckets), and I use Spica Green for the M3 differential and the gearbox in my other car. I meant to add some Spica Green to the ATF during this tune-up in the M3, but I forgot. :( I may go back and drain/mix/fill it again soon just to see what happens. If you have any questions about MoS2, its usage, or what you could expect to notice, please feel free to ask. It's easier to have people ask, because I've found if I say too many good things about it, people don't believe me. :) - Chris

Less than 1,000 miles have passed. I still experience occasional notchiness (Much less than stock!), and engaging gears on a cold morning is actually worse than with the stock fluids but once things warm up they are much better. Will changing to Mobil 1 tranny/diff fluids so soon be OK? If so does Mobil 1 make diff fluid and where can I buy both. #3. subwoofers - from kitwetzler@mindspring.com

Date: Thu, 4 Oct 2001 18:35:30 -0400 From: "kitwetzler@mindspring.com" <kitwetzler@mindspring.com> Subject: subwoofers I found a much cheaper alternative to the JL Audio stealth boxes. This is really only applicable to those of us with 4 doors, thought. The JL Audio cs110 truck style box fits the M3 perfectly. I have mine between my AA rear strut tower bar ad the rear seat, with the woofer firing through the ski pass through. (I didn't have a pass through and knocked out the opening with a rubber mallet) http://www.jlaudio.com/enclosures/cs110t.html It sounds great, more than enough bass (driven by a bridged Rockford Fosgate 400a4 (about 300 watts), I can rattle my teeth out if i want to. Very punchy and tight bass. I hated the way subwoofers sounded in the car, very slow and muffled because of the good seal between trunk and cabin. Now that I have the woofer basically firing directly into the cabin, the bass is much better... my amp's work is much easier too, since it doesn't have to push bass all the way through. Best of all it was only $200 or so. The power handling of the woofer is supposed to be pretty low, but it's fine with 300 watts, as long as you don't crank it for very long. I figure that if (when?) I blow out the woofer, I'll just swap in another, stronger one... -kit -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ .

Hey Rob, I love hearing stories about high-mileage M3's running strong and fierce (I'm at 91K) =) Quick question - is the BG setup a fancy machine that they hook up in the shop, or a couple of cans and hosey-bits that you buy and perform in your garage? Can you tell me about availability and cost? I'm thinking about doing a cross-country trip and this is sounding like the perfect way to kick it off. best, scott yu '97 M3 > 2. #5. Coolant hoses around throttle body - from Marc.S.Edwards@QuestDiagnostics.com
Top
Date: Thu, 4 Oct 2001 16:01:56 -0700 From: Marc.S.Edwards@QuestDiagnostics.com Subject: Coolant hoses around throttle body Matt Henson <hensonator@yahoo.com> stated (and others did too): The air that goes through the throttle is cold. The coolant hoses are connected to a thermostatic switch in or around the airbox (I think it depends on the year; the 3.0L is in the airbox). It allows warm coolant to circulate when it gets very cold, probably near freezing. This keeps ice from building up around the throttle. Remember that at part throttle the air speeds up, lowering the pressure and temperture. This could cause it to deposit some ice on the throttle plates. Warming the air probably helps with fuel evaporation as well, which will increase the economy and power of the engine. -Matt I think Matt said this, but, to paraphrase: It prevents ice from building up inside the throttle body which would end up in a frozen throttle butterfly and hence the inability to close the throttle (so you couldn't slow the car down unless you put it in neutral or turned off the engine). The coolant shouldn't be flowing through there unless it is cold enough for it do so. So, in warm climates this shouldn't be a problem and won't be affecting the temperature of the intake air. Like most high end car audio manufacturers, they use their strength to protect their dealers' margins. With that said, I think that they can be found from some of the shadier e-dealers. Or, try E-Bay. Worked for me but maybe it was a fluke. -Matt --- philooo <philooo@hotmail.com> wrote: > Date: Thu, 4 Oct 2001 15:34:44 -0400 > From: "philooo" <philooo@hotmail.com> > Subject: Where to buy JL Audio Stealthboxes ? > > I am decided to buy a pair of JL Stealthbox to my > stereo. > But I cannot find a place on internet to buy those > things.. > > Do you have any idea where I could buy those > stealthboxes new or used for my > 1995 M3 2 door ? > > Thank you for your help again. > Philippe DAIX > > > ************************************************************* > List Commands > UNSUBSCRIBE - (in subject line) unsubscribes you > from the mailing list. > DIR - sends a listing of files available in the > list's GET directory. > GET filename1.ext,filename2.ext - sends the > requested file(s). > > To issue a command/request to the server: > Send a message with the command you wish executed as > the > subject of the message to the email address > e36m3@bmw-m.net. > ************************************************************* > > __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? #7. check engine light again! - from Mdriver13@aol.com
Top
Date: Thu, 4 Oct 2001 22:34:30 EDT From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: check engine light again! Well, my check engine light came on again after autocrossing last week. Same as what happened a few weeks ago. Took it to my Dealer (who treats my very well) yesterday and after checking things out for over two hours they decided it was a leak in the evaporator extension tank and replacing it will cost $280.00 :-( Has anyone experienced this same problem? Anyway, they had to order the tank and sent me home. After talking to the service mgr. today he said the car would run just fine without replacing the tank, probably slightly better (I find this statement interesting) but I'd have to agree based on autox performance. The only problems he can see is if ever we start emissions testing around here it may not pass and the CE light will stay on. So, at this point I'm tempted not to fix it....hey, anyway it's a performance mod the way it is! Any comments or help? Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion 1997 & 2000 #13 BSP 2001

I was thinking of using them to mount up some treaded track tires for rainy track days. Is the offset for E36 and E46 the same? Anybody using E46 wheels successfully on modified E36M3's (I have bilstein shocks and H&R springs)? Any idea what the rim width is, as I haven't seen them in person yet?
