#1. engine thumping - from Jay

It took a carbon flush to do it, and still appears at times but its infrequent. And now I hear what sounds like a thumping low frequency sound in the bay. That travels at less than half the rpms of a lifter noise but but does get faster upon slight acceleration. Any ideas on what it could be. The car has 125,000 miles but it's been well taken care of. The underside has all the pre-cut out markings for your car model, such as speaker holes and holes for your rear head rests. The install was easy and straight forward with no problems. Date: Fri, 05 Oct 2001 17:12:48 From: "Ron Buchalski" <rbuchals@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: Mileage Adding my $0.02. I live in Maryland... Typically, my car spends about 90% of it's time driving on the interstates. If I behave (70-80 mph), I'll get 23-24 mpg. If I have fun (80+ mph) for an extended time, I'll get 21-22 mpg. The best I've seen is just under 27 mpg, when I set the cruise control for 72 mph and drove for 400 miles, with one stop. On the track, I get under 13 mpg. As Peter says, the lower the mpg, the bigger the grin! Lower mileage could also be a result of differing fuel additive packages in various parts of the country. From reading digest messages over the years, I think that California probably has the worst gas (lots of additives to control emissions), at the highest prices. Less populated areas, having no problems with air pollution, have fewer additives, the fuel prices are cheaper, and cars run better. Last May, the fuel sold in southern VA (near VIR) was 40c/gal cheaper than the fuel sold in the DC area, and my car ran great with it. As soon as I refueled with the local (DC area) gas, the engine ran worse, and mileage dropped 1-2 mpg. Lowell, it's time for your EPA rant again! ;-) -rb Steven Tom says: >Date: Fri, 05 Oct 2001 08:33:54 -0700 >From: Steven Tom <stom@qualcomm.com> >Subject: Re: [E36M3] mileage... > >WWWHHHHHAAAAATTT. Just for another datapoint - I set my #2 average on my OBC when I purchased my car and have never reset it. Its is now at 26mpg. Depending on traffic, driving mostly highway, I get 25-28mpg per tank, resetting #1 average on every fillup. Stock 99M3, 33k Miles. I picked up 93 octane for $1.39/gal here in Dallas.. which is pretty cheap.. most stations are at $1.49. Eric http://www.geocities.com/bmw_1999_m3

It definitely depends on the weight of the shoes I'm wearing. ;) Mine can vary greatly depending on driving style, obviously. For example, on the way from Ventura to San Jose, I generally take the 101 the entire way. For that route, I can easily average just over 28 MPG, usually about 10-15 mph over the posted speed limit. On the way home, I always make it a point to enjoy the drive, so I take the PCH with about 63 miles worth of fun-filled twisties. For that portion, even with sections of mellow driving, I average 16-19 MPG. It's true, lower gas mileage is much more enjoyable. Jonathan L. >From: "Kevin M. #7. Retrofit Cruise Control - from Dorffer, Rich
Top
Date: Fri, 5 Oct 2001 13:53:47 -0400 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: Retrofit Cruise Control Has anyone here ever retrofitted OE cruise control onto an E36 M3? What did it cost and how difficult was it? Did it work as well as the factory installed option? The reason I asked is a buddy of mine and I checked out a 1997 M3 Sedan last night and noted that it did not have cruise control. This surprised me as I thought they nearly all had cruise control but a quick check under the hood verified it was not installed. It also did not have the OBC, alarm or armrest, all of which the buyer is interested in. I told him the armrest and the alarm are easy and I would not touch the OBC retrofit with a ten foot pole. The cruise I was not sure about though. The price is right on this one and I figured it may be worthwhile for him to buy it and have cruise control retrofitted if possible (along with the alarm and armrest). Please advise and thanks in advance. Regards, Rich 95 M3 - has cruise control already

When I first bought my M3, I averaged about 18-19 MPG. Recently I've been running around 22, but I don't drive quite as vigorously as I used to. One night, on the way back from the drag strip, I decided to go very easy on the car to make up for the 12 runs I made down the strip. By being very careful, I was able to average 31-32 MPG on the freeway. --Sean '98 M3/4 Misc Goodies > >WWWHHHHHAAAAATTT. The 97s came in either "sport" or "luxury" editions. Sounds like you found a "sport" model. (Does it have manual seats? That is another marker for sport model.) Rather than attempt to retrofix the cruise control, I'd give some thought to locating another M3 that has the exact options your buddy wants. There are LOTS of E36M3s out there. My first long trip with my '95 I averaged 78mph according to the OBC (with speeding up and slowing down as I saw fit, worried about cops..).. and I got 26+mpg I think. Another comparison.. I took a drive I've done many times, 3 hours, 180 miles, 3 mountain passes, lots of 2 lane roads (= lots of 4th gear 60-85mph passes), I got 27mpg in my 95 M3. I did the same drive a month later in my GF's 2000 328Ci 5 speed (not sport package, so it has 16" wheels an energy-efficient tires) and got 32.7mpg.. wow! My commute is 12 miles on the freeway, and I never get below 20mpg on a tank, usually right around 20.5 or 21. If you can't pull 20 on the freeway, something's wayyyy off. - reid > WWWHHHHHAAAAATTT.
