#1. Oil leak question - from Robert Manger
Top
Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2001 12:29:28 -0400 From: "Robert Manger" <Robert_Manger@Mastercard.com> Subject: Oil leak question This question goes out to those on the list that know their engine very intimately. I have an oil leak that seems to be starting from some where in the back of the engine above the steering rack. I at first thought the rack seals had failed or an associated hose, but the fluid is very clear in nature and looks like oil. Is there a return line or something that is back there that I can check? Thanks, Rob 95 and she leaks a bit

#3. Welder referral - from Juan Rico

Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2001 09:59:29 -0700 From: Juan Rico <juan_rico@captionsinc.com> Subject: Welder referral Hi everybody, I need a referral to somebody who can do some nice welding work on my car in the LA area or its vicinities... I've developed a crack on one of those two beams that run parallel to the engine and support the front dam, bumper, etc. The crack is where the inside of the wheel well in the engine compartment is welded to the beam, in front of the strut towers, right behind the AC unit (?) cutout (right under the windshield washer fluid tank). Doesn't seem like anything serious but it's growing. Has anybody had this problem? Juan.

I purchased the car when it was a bit less than two years old / 23kmiles. The first time I filled up the tank, upon accelerating onto the Fwy I notice the same behavior. Never happened again but I noted it to the dealer on my first service call (still al under the BMW factory warranty). The dealer replaced a fuel tank sensor and a pump and in the ensuing 2 + years of ownership it has never recurred. Good Luck, I hope you are under warranty because while it didn't cost me anything the list on the parts wasn't cheap. After filling up my gas tank with key in hand and securely capped off the gas tank, I drove away to home. The next morning when I started the car, the gas gauge was playing a little dancing game. It went from full to empty (with empty light light up) while the car is running. I drove off and it dance again like that - full-empty-full. It happened about 5 times during a 30 miles drive to and from work. The next morning, everything else is fine. No more gauge fluctuating, everything is solid. Is my gas gauge or gas sensor about to go or is it bad gas? I've been filling up the gas tank at this place on a normal basis since I purchase the car new 3 years ago and nothing since now. Please help. Thanks, -John __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? NEW from Yahoo! The only welding I've had done in the L.A. area was at ProParts/TriPoint Engineering in Canoga Park. I believe Jeff is their BMW guy, at least he's the person I've dealt with and he was pretty helpful. You can always go check out some of the welding work they've done on their cages one of the cars there. He is looking for a 95 M3 to use for testing his turbo kit. He said he would give the person a significant discount on the kit (which retails for $7995). They are located in San Antonio Texas. I can't drive out there otherwise I would do it. But I thought I would pass it on to my M3 buddies... I hear one is living pretty dangerously swimming anywhere near that area of the Gulf. ;-) Kidding aside, I agree with Mel in that EPA should prove how RFG is beneficial in today's society. Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2001 16:17:28 -0400 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: Burning River (was Now RFG II Gas) Mel, You are clearly confused. It is called "Burning River". Flaming river sounds kind of, kind of ..... oh never mind. Yes, the beer is from the Great Lakes Brewing Company named after this 'event' (actually it is plural) as the Cuyahoga River caught fire in 1959 and 1969. http://www.allaboutbeer.com/beertalk/taste/burning.html or http://www.ratebeer.com/ShowBeer.asp?BeerID=1224 Now drunken idiots partying in the Flats (the Flats line both sides of the river near Lake Erie) after drinking Burning River Ale like to jump in to cross the river late at night and end up drowning before reaching the other side. The river is much cleaner than it once was but you won't catch me going for a dip anytime soon (still dirty from all the humongous ships that go up and down the river and it is getting pretty damned cold here). Best regards, Rich

If you allow the engineers to keep working on a design it will keep getting better (you will also never get anything into production). My guess, and it's not even that educated a guess, is that the dual VANOS and the higher compression ratio of the E-46 help out quite a bit with the low end. They may have also made improvements in the emission system to make it more efficient. The E-46 intake system is vastly improved even to the casual observer but this seem like it would be most helpful at higher revs. I have never seen the HP/Torque curves for the E-36 Euro engine which I understand has Dual VANOS and the hot intake system. Anybody out there got the data? Anybody out there have any real inside info on what those clever German engineers did? Yes, I'm an engineer!
