Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2001 15:40:50 -0500 From: Bob Stommel <rstommel@iquest.net> Subject: RE: Kumho Victoracers - to shave or not to shave? Jim: If you're going to run the Kumhos on a dry track, shaving them to 3/32 will give you longer wear and faster lap times. The reduction in tread squirm makes the tire last longer. If you're running them in the wet (or dual wet/dry), leave the tread full-depth. Either way, give them a good heat cycle and let them sit off the car for 48 hours before your first event. Hi All, I'm thinking of running Kumho Victoracers as my next track/autox tire, departing from the Toyo RA-1 I've been using. I've run the Toyos at full tread-depth, but wondering what the feeling is for shaving the Kumhos for drivers school/open track events? (My main reason for possibly switching, FYI, is price. The Kumho's are cheaper than the Toyos, but I stiil need to calculate shipping costs.) Thanks for your feedback, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - needs new track shoes

I can honestly say that there was definetely a difference. I added a full gallon to a full (well, full minus a gallon) gastank. This was roughly a 20% mixture to the gas in the tank. The throttle response seemed crisper and it seemed more willing to rev. Being that I only did that one tank, I cannot vouch for the long term consequenses-- I read the website listed below and everything made sense.... I get the message about every 2 weeks since adding the trailer wiring. Usually comes on once and goes away for a couple weeks, but it always comes back. Maybe a bad connection? Loose wire nut or other connection? I can't find mine but it's purely random. They're OK in the wet unshaved. They will stick a little better shaved but may not last quite as long. On the other hand, if you drive aggressively at the track (which I think you do) the shaved tires will last as long or longer. If I we're to order the V700's again I'd order them shaved. Incidentally, Kumho is supposed to be coming out with a new design soon, you might check into those. I couldn't get the Kumho's or Toyo's last time so ended up with the Yok's. Don't like 'em nearly as much. I had a 3-qt Accusump in a 914-4 2.0 that I raced a while back. I would not recommend it. Why? Because it's a big job to plumb it correctly, and the protection it affords has a limited duration. I.e. if you're in a long sweeper the Accusump will protect you for, say, 3 seconds after the in-pan pump is starved for oil. But after those three seconds, you're just as screwed as if you had no Accusump at all.. IMHO it's better to address the problem with a controlled flow of oil in the sump, e.g. baffles or twin-pickup pans (e.g. my LWT) or dry sumps, etc. Solve the problem at the source instead of addressing the symptom as the Accusump does. It's interesting to note that I've _never_ seen a wet-sumped racing Alfa Romeo (the 50's through 80's cars) with anything other than the "hammerhead" two-piece sump that came standard on the later 4-cylinder motors and could be (retro-)fitted onto any 1300/1600/1750/2000 motor. Its baffles are labyrinthian -- a very nice casting indeed. Regards, -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com
