#2. bouncing speedometer - from Kris Welhart

Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 13:03:24 -0500 From: "Kris Welhart" <kris.welhart@cyou.com> Subject: bouncing speedometer Hello all, My speedometer has started a weird trend. Most of the time it bounces around, under acceleration it seems to display the correct speed for a brief moment, and the rest of the time it is nonfunctional in the rest position. It did this a couple of times in the past and yesterday it assumed full time employment. The instantaneous MPG bounces around as well, I assume because of the speedo. It appears to be a loose wire or bad connection somewhere. Has anyone else had a similar problem and = what is the best remedy or course of action to find the problem. Everything else on the cluster is OK, no lights out, guages functional etc. Thanks in advance for the help. Kris=20 1995 M3 3.2 OBD I=20

I'm curious though, does anyone know =3D where I can get a poster of the E36 M3? Preferably black? I have E46 = =3D Posters hanging up in my office, but they're just not the same :-). Also, if anyone knows where to get a 6" BMW logo iron on patch, I'd =3D really appreciate it :-) BDT

It would probably be the same > case as if the ASC was turned off and during 'discovery' this was found > out. I'm just a layman, but... I doubt any insurance company investigation has ever gone this far. They'd have to have a REALLY good reason to think your traction control was permanently disabled, then tear the car apart to try to figure it out. Disabling it manually before a drive is even harder to prove. I don't see how the insurance company would go in and prove (from a wrecked car, no less!) that you had traction control off. Furthermore, who cares? Are you really any more liable if you turned off your traction control than you would be if you bought a car w/out it? As long as you did your best to control the car and didn't intentionally run into someone, I frankly don't see where they could go with this unless they had a REALLLY REALLY good lawyer :) I sure wish I had traction control in my 95 for the rainy season here in Seattle. But, at the same time, I understand that noone wants to have to flip a switch before they kick the ass end of their car out on a corner.. sometimes these decisions are made mid-corner, hardly the time to be taking your hands off the wheel and hitting buttons. It would be very cool to have traction control that I could just flip on ONLY when it's slick so I don't have to worry about spinning my S03's trying to pull out into traffic. Anyhow, I wouldn't be worried at all about liability for turning off your ASC. Does ASC just retard throttle, or does it apply brakes to individual wheels like DSC? I've only driving a bimmer with DSC, none with ASC... - reid

I've only driving a bimmer with DSC, none with ASC... - reid <Snip> My contact at Continental-Teves (makers of the E36 brake and traction system) suggests that the ASC+T brake torques and retards timing/throttle until 40 mi/h. After that it only retards timing/throttle. This is to prevent excessive brake wear that would be associated with the higher speeds. Also, in a related note the ASC+T switch does not change the function of the ABS system. Jeremy Conners 97 M3

Didn't anyone listen to Bob Varsha sulk about the demise of the network at the end of the Suzuka F1 broadcast? If you heard it, it was clearly evident that the NFKASVN (Network Formerly Known As SpeedVisioN <- Sorry, but you guys all love acronyms) wasn't going to be the same in the near future. Excuse me, but I need another tissue to wipe away the tears... I guess I'll just have to get a job with an F1 team. If I can't watch the races, I guess I'll just have to be there first hand... I love the idea of being able to get the Motorsport brace and/or at least having the switch work in the opposite manner it does now (as Chester mentioned that Hunter Johnson has done?) Hell, I can never remember if I turned mine off or not because the stupid light rarely works anyway. If one were to actually remove the ASC throttle body, would you have to replace it with a big bore TB, or would you just get one from a '95? If anyone has a link or copy of Hunter's instructions for rewiring the switch, that's be appreciated Jonathan L. >From: "Robert Exconde" <99e36M3@exconde.com > >The way I see it, I have two options: >1.
