#2. Re: Brake pads for driving schools... - from Vern Anderson

Date: Wed, 17 Oct 2001 14:56:58 -0400 From: Vern Anderson <vanderson@cerebellumsoft.com> Subject: Re: Brake pads for driving schools... Bob, My mechanic gave me a set of EBC Reds to test for him in May. I ran them on the street (about 7,000 miles), did about 20 autocrosses on them and took them to Nelson Ledges three days (I usually run PF90's on the track, but Nelson is pretty easy on brakes as far as tracks go). I actually liked the Red's quite a bit. At Nelson I did a simulated 60 minute enduro (43 laps total) in prep for a club race and that finally killed them. On a 70 degree day with front brake ducts (the Bimmerworld setup), SuperBlue and EOM rotors, they felt fairly consistent and didn't fade too badly. One word of warning about them, and this is something that my mechanic wanted me to verify - they don't wear well near the end of the pad. They are Kevlar and we've been told that they like lots of material; that the wear isn't linear after 1/3 of the pad is left. My 43-lap session proved this as I started with well over 1/3 of the pad and finished the session on the backing plates. I recommend them for the street and autocross, but I will never run them on the track again below 1/2 again. For the beginning of their life, I ran them twice at Nelson and it seemed like they were going to last forever. I have no idea if there is any scientific basis for this, but it's what I experienced. YMMV, no warranties will be honored with the above info, all rights reserved, etc, etc. Vern Anderson 98 M3/2 PF90's back on and ready to go for Nelson tomorrow :) -------------------- 7 -------------------- Date: Wed, 17 Oct 2001 09:49:12 -0700 (PDT) From: Robert Liu <bob_a_liu@yahoo.com> Subject: Brake pads for driving schools... I'm going to be doing my first driving school in a couple weeks. I currently have EBC reds, and rotors with 154,000 miles. The school is at CMP in Kershaw, SC, which is supposedly hard on brakes. I'm leaning towards getting the Carbotech Panther Plus and a set of brembos. Any good/bad experiences with these pads? How 'bout EBC reds? Anyone with experience running at the CMP track? Thanks, Bob

Just wondering if it has been done yet. I know about your setup Zander, but if I recall the M-Coupe requires the head unit to be on the bench for MP3 download to an internal drive. Tell me if I'm wrong. Mel

The car is in near perfect condition and I am currently in talks with the gentlemen to whom I sold my previous car, a 1993 325i. My prosepective buyer is very interested and, after sending him copies of all of my service records and a few articles which tout the M3 Sedan as the "best all-around car that BMW has ever built", he's pretty much sold and wishes to discuss price. Bear in mind that since we have done business in the past, I intend to offer the car to him at a very attractive price...I'm just not sure what that price should be. the following is my ad which will appear in the December Roundel: 1997 M3 Sedan VIN WBSCD932XVEE06179 Cosmos black/perfect black leather, 39k miles, 5-speed, luxury package, sunroof, cruise, HK speakers, OBC, 17" M Contour wheels, garaged, 3rd car, no accidents, no snow, all records, Mobil 1, original owner, aftermarket warranty to April '08 or 100k, $31,000. Of course, this is a "Roundel" price which tends be a bit high. So, my question...if you were in the market for a car of this caliber, what would you consider to be a fair but attractive price? Your input is greatly appreciated. Rob _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

I always thought the same about cars advertised in the Roundel... they are priced somewhat high. Would be interesting to know how much these cars eventually sold for. Where is the car? The prices seem to vary quite a bit depending on your location. I did a quick nadaguides.com estimate for your car and came up with $29,500 for avg retail value. FWIW, I bought a 97 coupe, lux edition, Estoril Blue, 31K miles, every other option your car has for $30,900 in April of this year. Everything else being equal, is one color E36M3 worth more than another? FWIW, this same subject comes up all the time on the BMW message boards at roadfly.com (Does anyone read them? They can be entertaining at times.) The general consensus there is that the bottom has dropped out of the E36M3 market in the recent past. Good luck selling the car. (I'm keeping mine.) David, How about a Roundel advertising BMW dealer offering discounts to BMW CCA members? In my experience, their discounted prices are frequently up to 1/2 the price at a local dealer. Please note that if the 'drivin light cover' you are looking for are the stock plastic headlight covers, they may not be available separate from the entire cluster. alex f

How 'bout EBC reds? Anyone with experience >running at the CMP track? Bob, I have driven CMP many times. First three times I warped rotors. Since then I have added the Bimmerworld brake ducting and no more problems. The track is hard on brakes, but only as hard as you make it. Since you are a novice I would not worry too much about it. Bring your car to a mechanic and have him/her measure your rotor thickness. If within spec, then just bring those Brembo's as spares and have somebody help you swap them out if you warp the ones you have on now. If you are in the Charlotte/Rock Hill area and need a recommendation for somebody to inspect the car, let me know. I have no experience with any of the pads you list (I have run Porterfield R4's and PF90's), but have heard good things about the Carbotech's. As far as experience at CMP, if you are running with Sandlapper, you are in good hands. Ask your instructor lots of questions, and if you feel you are overworking the brakes, then ask him to help you with your technique. You will primarily be working on learning the line and getting used to higher cornering and braking forces during your first school, and will not really be finding the limits of the car. Always take a nice, slow cool down lap and stay off the brakes once the checkered flag is thrown. Take a couple laps around the paddock after your session if you smell the brakes, and this will cool them down. Good luck and have fun. I think that many '99s are going in the 28-29K range and many '95s are in the 18-19K range. I think that your '97 may be worth 25-26K. Maybe 27K if you are lucky. I know that sounds low but that's just what these cars are going for in many areas these days.
