On the low end there is the Aiwa, which was one of the first but only plays mode-1 discs without long file names. It costs around $180 these days. On the higher end there's the Clarion AutoPC, which also does voice control and GPS. It goes for $1k new or $600 on E-Bay. Kenwood has several MP3/CD head units that seem to be a decent value right now. I don't believe that any of the units have backlighting that matches or looks decent in the M3. I don't think that anyone makes an MP3-CD changer yet, which is too bad becuase that would be awesome. I might be working on this later this year or early next year but no promises :-). Hard disks aren't designed for the car's temperature range. If you are lucky it won't work at all below freezing. If you're not lucky then the drive may destroy itself. I think that most 2.5" NB computer drives have a temp sensor so they won't die. I think that we will see OEM in-dash DVD readers before we get a lot of HDD's installed in the car. The major company that was doing in-dash HDD players, EMPEG, was bought by Sonic Blue (Rio) and then taken out back and shot. A popular solution is to use a Crative or Archos Jukebox with a tape adapter or plugged directly into the amp. This way you can take it with you and keep it out of the cold. Anyway, check out MMXpress.com and other web sites for more MP3-CD drives. -Matt Regards, Matt --- Mel Silva <melsilva@mindspring.com> wrote: > Date: Wed, 17 Oct 2001 14:30:38 -0500 > From: "Mel Silva" <melsilva@mindspring.com> > Subject: Head Unit replacement? > > Has anyone replaced their HK Head unit with a CD/R > capable MP3 player. I want to let you know I did it and my problem seems to solve. only detail, I had to pay $39 for the switch and not $10 as expected... :( But the annoying message is gone, thanks everyone for your help. For Mel, I replaced my head unit (obasic BMW casette deck) with an AIWA CDC MP3 player, really nice to have so many songs, but you really need a better amplifier. Aside of that, there is no skipping memory in most mp3 player as in my aiwa, and considering the M3 suspension is a kind of tight it skips from time to time but It doesn't bother me so far. This unit was really super easy to install. Philippe

Date: Wed, 17 Oct 2001 14:42:09 -0700 From: "Wen Liew" <wwliew@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: Selling My Car - In Need of Some Input There are various factors that affect used car prices, including condition of the car, cult car status, economic climate, war(duh), supply/demand etc. However, if you assume a 11% depreciation after 1 year, 10% the next year, 9% and so forth , eventually tapering off at 25% after 15 years, a 4.5 year old car is worth about 58.5% of its original value. 1997 build date M3 @$45k => $26.5 in Q4 01. I have tried this algorithm on 88M5 (about $14k Q4 01), 91M5 ($21k Q4 01), 94 build M3 ($17k Q4 01), 99 M Coupe ($29-$33k), MBZ and 911's and came pretty close. The depreciation rate would be worse for non-M cars. So, 99 built M5 should be under $60K EOY 01??? Of course dealers will say "but it is a 00 model and it was a $80k car". ;-) We'll see. FWIW. #8. Selling My Car - In Need of Some Input - from Dorffer, Rich

Date: Wed, 17 Oct 2001 17:48:41 -0400 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: Selling My Car - In Need of Some Input Rob asks about a fair selling price for his 1997 M3 Sedan. Just within the last two weeks, a friend (Scott) of mine bought a 1997 M3 Sedan in green/gray interior. It did not have cruise or the luxury package unlike Rob's. It had 42,000 miles and did not have the extended warranty. It had no written records to speak of other than the service marks in the owner's manual and the print out from BMW NA (courtesy of my local tech). No accident damage appeared to ever be present as all the panels were original and no repainting was evident. The car passed a prepurchase inspection by Brett Anderson including a compression and leak down test with flying colors. Scott paid $23,100 for it which we, including Brett, considered a real bargain. We all felt the car was worth $26,000 - $27,000. I would say that your car sounds like it would be worth the high end of this range and I would probably pay up to $28,000 if the car was what I was looking for. I have seen this car sold for more though (another buddy bought a very similar 1998 M3 sedan in silver/black interior for $32,500 last year with only 18,000 miles) although prices appear to have dropped some from last year. Best regards, Rich 95 M3/2 89 325is - will be replaced with an M3 sedan some day (two years or so).

From: "Mel Silva" <melsilva@mindspring.com> Subject: Head Unit replacement? Has anyone replaced their HK Head unit with a CD/R capable MP3 player. Just wondering if it has been done yet. I know about your setup Zander, but if I recall the M-Coupe requires the head unit to be on the bench for MP3 download to an internal drive. Tell me if I'm wrong. I believe (and don't hold me to this) that the part number is: 65 12 9 415 433. Of course, I can't say that any BMW sound system I've listened to was worth a damn, but I have been known to be wrong.
