I recently removed the inspection plug in my Sanborn (now Coleman Powermate) 5hp, 60 gallon air compressor when I was re-plumbing my garage. I was surprised at how little rust there was on the inside. It looked like a mild case of acne - mostly bare metal with a few spots of surface rust here and there. I've owned the compressor for 16 years now and use it moderately. At this rate I figure the tank will rust out in about 300 years. ===== David Kroth david_kroth@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The earlier ones are M-Bus and the later ones AI-net (not so sure about the later ones). I don't know if the connector is compatible but I think that the signals should be. Does anyone know what connector the Apline units use? Other than getting a new Alpine head unit the other option is to find or build an adapter. I'm pretty sure that some companies make an adapter to allow a new changer with the stock head unit. Not we just need one that goes the other way around. -Matt --- russell <driver8m3@yahoo.com> wrote: > Date: Wed, 17 Oct 2001 15:09:17 -0700 (PDT) > From: russell <driver8m3@yahoo.com> > Subject: Re: Head Unit Replacement > > i've been wondering about a similar change (i also > have the hk > system-cassette in front, changer in trunk); getting > rid of the in-dash > cassette in favor of a cd player which is compatible > with the stock > changer. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? #3. new member (kinda) - from Hank Wallace

My name is Hank and I live in the western suburbs of Boston, MA. I purchased a silver '99 M3 Coupe about 2 months ago as a replacement for my E46 328i when the lease ended. My wife also drives a E46 328i. I will be using the M3 as my daily driver and possible autox/track car. I am addicted to autox! I am technically a Novice in my first year, but I have attended a lot of events this year. The car is completely stock right now. I have to decide which SCCA class I want to autox in next year before I start doing any mods. It depends on what other cars end up in the class with it after the reorganization. I will be autoxing it in the BMWCCA Boston Chapter and White Mountain Chapter events regardless. I also own a '93 MR2 (not a turbo) which is my current autox car. It is not fast, but it turns great and is more fun than the M3 right now. That will probably change after I get race tires for the M3. Before anyone flames me - the MR2 is prepared to the limits of the stock classes and my M3 is bone stock right now. All for now. Hank (weekend racer who does other stuff to pay the bills)

#4. Aftermarket Spring ride heights - from David Hogg

Date: Wed, 17 Oct 2001 21:06:58 -0700 From: "David Hogg" <springwood@blazenet.net> Subject: Aftermarket Spring ride heights I'm looking to find out what the ride height is on real live M3's with the following aftermarket springs: Eibach Pro Kit, Eibach Sportline, Eibach Road Race, H&R Sport, H&R Race. Would you mind measuring from the hub center straight up to the underside edge of your fender for me, please and email me the measurements front and back on the driver's side? If I get enough to make a good sample, I'll post the results on the list. Any other general comments would be appreciated, too. I'm looking to replace the limper-than-they-used-to-be LTW springs on my 95 for I-Stock CCA Club Racing duty next season. I'm concerned about tire clearance, and I don't want it buckboard stiff, as it's driven to and from the track. Any other brand that I should be considering, as well? TIA! Dave Hogg

Yoko AVS Sports and > Bridgestone RE730s come to mind. > Kinda...I'd say and well before the end of their tread life! My previous set of street tires was thrown out because they were so loud. They were Pirelli P7000s (with a similar tread pattern) and likely had another 7 to 8K miles left on them but I couldn't stand the noise any longer. I now have RE730s which were quiet as a mouse when new. They now are starting to get significantly louder with only about 4-5K miles on the tires. The wet performance of both of these tires is outstanding but I'm pretty sure I'll look for a more traditional tread pattern next time. In the mean time I may try to have mine shaved a bit to see if it restores the tires to original noise(less) levels. BTW, a hard track weekend on the noisy Pirellis would temporarily quiet them down some. I assume that the aggressive driving on track had the effect of shaving a different wear pattern into the tread. A few weeks of street driving would restore the noise. Tom Tice '98 M3/4 '99 540/6

My experience with Yok AVS sports is that they are much quieter than RE730s over their lifetime... Right now I have the AVS sports on and there is some noise from feathering in the front tires, but nothing that I really notice. The other M3 has RE 730s, and I can't even stand being in the car at 15-20 mph because the droning is so annoying. Those tires still have plenty of tread left, unfortunately. I will say that they were quiet when new. This is my 2nd set of AVS sports, and they were quiet enough for me. Another viewpoint. Margaret white M3/4 with new AVS sports on order for the rears...

Am I the only one that drives like this??? Yes, but it's intake growl on top of the exhaust, and electronica coming out of the speakers. In fact, the only time I hear my tires is on the track... and then they're usually squealing. ;-) - peterg (could care less about rattles/squeaks/tire-hum)

#10. head unit - from Mark Greene

Date: Thu, 18 Oct 2001 05:38:17 -0400 From: Mark Greene <gsa@arpinintl.com> Subject: head unit I replaced my head unit with a kenwood mp3 player (no cd changer) I believe it was an 8017, and I paid about 260 installed (unit ordered online). The whole system sounds better, and I have changed the cd twice since i bought it about 6 months ago; the cd's i make at home and they fit about 120 to 160 songs on one. this player also allows up to 6 folders, i.e., the first disk i made was 160 songs in a row which was a bit daunting, the second disk is 8 folders with x amount of music in each by category. The fit is excellent and you can switch between 2 lighting schemes....not exact but I have gotten used to it. If anything, there were a couple of buttons which seemed very bright at first......I can take a picture if anyone is interested. Mark Greene
