I'm sure you'll enjoy your car, either as a daily driver or for autocross. No flames from me about the C-Stock MR2, they're great cars. I think C-Stock (almost all MR2's and a few Miata's) at Nationals was one of the most, if the not the most competitive classes this year. An MR2 C-Stock regular, Lee Piccione, co-drove my BSP M3 at the Peru ProSolo and he is now looking for a 1995 M3 to daily drive and autocross (I should get a commission). The M3 should be very competitive next year in B-Stock. They'll be classed against the MR2 Turbos and base Boxsters. I think they'll be a little of an underdog against those two, but not by much. BTW, there is a guy in Boston who autocrosses a bright yellow 4-door M3 that you should watch out for. Don't listen to a thing he says, he can't trusted and is crazy - he doesn't even keep both front wheels on the ground what he autocrosses (hi Steve!!!). Here goes.. My name is Hank and I live in the western suburbs of Boston, MA. I purchased a silver '99 M3 Coupe about 2 months ago as a replacement for my E46 328i when the lease ended. My wife also drives a E46 328i. I will be using the M3 as my daily driver and possible autox/track car. I am addicted to autox! I am technically a Novice in my first year, but I have attended a lot of events this year. The car is completely stock right now. I have to decide which SCCA class I want to autox in next year before I start doing any mods. It depends on what other cars end up in the class with it after the reorganization. I will be autoxing it in the BMWCCA Boston Chapter and White Mountain Chapter events regardless. I also own a '93 MR2 (not a turbo) which is my current autox car. It is not fast, but it turns great and is more fun than the M3 right now. That will probably change after I get race tires for the M3. Before anyone flames me - the MR2 is prepared to the limits of the stock classes and my M3 is bone stock right now. All for now. Hank (weekend racer who does other stuff to pay the bills)

Date: Thu, 18 Oct 2001 07:11:53 -0400 From: "Carey Probst" <hcprobst@alum.mit.edu> Subject: Mileage Revisited I just returned from a 2500+ mile vacation, driving from Upstate NY to Atlanta through PA. Overall mileage for the trip: 26.5 With real gas (non-oxygenated, reformulated, big city crap) 27.7 With Georgia oxygenated, reformulated crap 25.2 As for those getting 30+ I have to assume that you all must drive downhill both ways too and from work. the best I could do was about 45 by switching to consum1 on a steep downgrade and hitting reset, but that droppedas soon as the hill leveled and plumetted going up. Average highway speeds during this time 75 to 75+ but never over 3 digits, even with the crazies in Georgia. Did get close a few times. Date: Thu, 18 Oct 2001 08:30:59 -0400 From: shane.a.kleinpeter@accenture.com Subject: Re: Head Unit Replacement I think that the stock changers are Alpine. The earlier ones are M-Bus and the later ones AI-net (not so sure about the later ones). I don't know if the connector is compatible but I think that the signals should be. Does anyone know what connector the Apline units use? Other than getting a new Alpine head unit the other option is to find or build an adapter. I'm pretty sure that some companies make an adapter to allow a new changer with the stock head unit. Not we just need one that goes the other way around. -Matt Not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but they may have an application. Try here: http://www.blitzsafe.com/blitz_catalog/blitz_catalog.html I got an adapter from them to use an Alpine changer in my Land Rover. You can't buy directly from them, but they can tell you where their dealers are in your area. The adapter I bought was $75. Couple that with $250 for an Alpine changer, and I saved over $600 over what Land Rover wants for a CD player at the dealership. Given the input that I had received along with other due diligence that I have done, I have offered the car to my prospective buyer for $27.5k which I hope he will consider to be a great deal, considering NY-area prices and the near-perfect condition of the car. Assuming the sale goes as planned, I may have the following for sale in a few weeks: JTD front strut brace JimC Intake Kit 4 Borbet Type E 17" wheels and possibly some other odds and ends. I will keep you updated. Thanks again...you guys (and girls) are great. Although I may miss the car terribly, I am hoping that the new M3 will fill that void. #8. Broken Thermostat? - from morris.michael@adlittle.com

Date: Thu, 18 Oct 2001 10:00:54 -0400 From: morris.michael@adlittle.com Subject: Broken Thermostat? Hello List: My temperature gauge is acting a bit funny and wanted to get some input from you all. Here is the situation: Walked outside this morning and started the car, went back in and brushed my teeth, came out, inside of car was warm (heater was on) and I started to drive. (Needle on Blue) During my 2 mile commute to work, the needle was on the "blue" for almost the whole time, despite the fact that the heater was pumping out some heat. I look up for a couple of seconds, look back at the gauge, and it had shot right up to the middle marker, where it usually sits. Could this delay to register the temperature be caused by a broken thermostat? Does the thermostat send the signal to the temp. gauge or does the temp. gauge work off of its own sensor. Other info: '95. 85K miles. Coolant level check. Original plastic waterpump. : ( The ultimate question is: Can I make my 6 hour drive tommorrow morning to PA (from Boston) without fearing overheating the whole time? I have a new thermostat and housing sitting in my room, is it a simple swap if need be? I just got a set of these puppies, and was surprised to see that they go _on_each_side_ of the bushings. I thought they would go _inside_ them and fill in the void where there isn't any rubber... Did I get the right part? And (they came without instructions) does the concave side of each part face inward (i.e. towards the center of the bushing) when installed? They're nicely made, out of Delrin. Thanks, -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com
