The temp gauge barely moved up off the blue, so I figured that the thermostat was stuck open. I replaced the thermostat and tada.....still had the problem! Turns out it was a faulty temp sensor connection. The temp gauge has it's own temperature sensor located in the cylinder head. It is located under the intake manifold towards the front of the head. There are actually 2 sensors mounted there, one for the DME and one for the gauge. The rearmost sensor is for the gauge. Try unplugging it and plugging it back on to see if that helps any. It worked for me. Nick > My temperature gauge is acting a bit funny and wanted to get some input > from you all. Date: Thu, 18 Oct 2001 13:11:28 EDT From: RogRacer@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] Broken Thermostat Hey Mike, It is hard to say with only a 2 mile run if the engine should be up to "temp" (at least per the OEM gauge) in that time. My experience is "yes", most likely. I just replaced my thermostat after I noticed that my engine was taking too long to come up to temp..turns out one of the support legs of the thermostat spring had (apparently) corroded and left the thermostat stuck open. A new thermostat fixed everything just fine. With regard to replacement, it isn't too hard if you have the right tools..you need a thin 32mm wrench and a pulley-holding tool (some people indicate you may not need this last item, but I'm sure glad I had one). I got my tools from Chester on this list. I would be more worried about your water pump. Given your symptoms, I'd replace the pump and theromstat immediately before driving any real distance. In fact, given your cars mileage, I'd do it NOW! Roger W. A car is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it. That value can be estimated through statistical analysis, but I seriously doubt any mathematical theory can properly explain it. Margaret, I would not be able to stand driving M3 at 15-20mph either, regardless of tire noise! '-) > Those tires still have plenty of tread left, unfortunately. > I will say that they were quiet when new. I've had RE730s since last fall and they were remarkably quiet when new. Much quieter than MXX3s, new or old, or new Toyo RA1s. Off the scale quieter than Yoko 032Rs. An order of magnitude better than MXX3s in the rain as well, though a bit mushier on dry. Now keep in mind that RE730s, S02/3s (others?) come with dual layer Bridgestone rubber. The upper layer is harder and in my experience quieter than the softer inner layer. As the inner layer becomes exposed, RE730s got louder but their dry traction improves! Mine have started humming at around 4/32nds but got quieter now that they are at the wear bars. alex f '95 M3 with bold RE730s for autoX and RA1s for the steet (don't ask).

Very simple, it is MY algorithm based on: 1. Most cars don't depreciate at a constant rate, year 1 being worse than year 2, etc. 2. In general, most car values decay but eventually are still worth something when sold as scrap metal. >A car is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it. True and I don't disagree. It's called an outlier ;) There is also a sucker born every minute and there is always someone out there who believes his car is worth more than someone else's because of all the "upgrades", etc. >That value can be estimated through statistical analysis, but I seriously >doubt any mathematical theory can properly explain it. It's called modeling and in this case it is an overly simplistic model. Just test it with some real data and see if you can get a good fit. There is no real magical mathematical model here, just putting certain known facts, observations and common sense into good use. Take it for what it is worth and nothing more.
