If they choose > to where them still, that is their decision. This is of course a long-running discussion, with some logic on both sides. Several Chapters now require a roll bar with the use of 5 or 6 point harnesses, which isn't unreasonable. However the popular Schroth 4 point harness arguably doesn't suffer from the same drawback. With respect only to the Schroth harness with ASM, I'm not willing to trade away its superior protection compared with a stock lap/diagonal in the most common accident modes (plain impact, any direction), against the undemonstrated possibility of an injury issue in an uncommon accident mode (rollover with total roof collapse). > Take a look at this : > http://www4.ncsu.edu/~ctsalter/e36_m3_yellow_damage/interior_driver_seat.jpg > > There were four impacts in all, but the seat broke in > the 2nd where I went backwards into a wall hard. > > I admit this was an odd situation that caused this > type of an accident, BUT it _can_ happen. > Apparently the seat should be able to hold the stress > of the harnesses, but don't expect the harnesses to > stay tensioned. That sure can happen, and with any seat, including a racing seat. I suspect you'd need to have a seat brace mounted to the rollcage cross bar to protect against seat back collapse in a severe rear impact. I recall a Porsche drive being killed somewhere out east (Lime Rock?) a few years ago when his seat back broke and his head hit. The conclusion was that a seat brace was needed. > Also, correct me if I'm wrong, this is kind of outside > of my knowledge, but aren't harness bars suppose to > help provide a more proper angle for the harness to go > over your shoulders, not allowing your spine to be as > compressed? I know the cross brace from my roll bar > doesn't really achieve this since by the end of a > weekend my back is really hurting. I guess that would depend on how tall you are and what seats you have. I don't find it to be a problem with my M3 "Vader" seats. Maybe a harness bar would offer at least some utility in both those situations: lifting the shoulder harness and preventing a collapsed seat back from folding down to far? Neil 96 M3

#5. Sheepskins review anyone? - from alex.fadeev@verizon.com

Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 12:39:06 -0400 From: alex.fadeev@verizon.com Subject: Sheepskins review anyone? Well folks, I'm sick and tired of sweating like a pig in BMW leather seats all summer long down here in TX. After looking around for possible solutions I've stumbled on the idea of sheep skin covers for my and my wife's E36 seats. Both BMW as well as Roundel advertisers price BMW sheep skins at or above $500 for the pair of front seat covers. Given similar pricing, I'm leaning towards BMW sheep skins if for no other reason than that they are likely to feet better than after markets. The other alternative are the $225 BMW sheep skin 'vests' - roughly 10" wide sheep skins that cover only the seat centers. Has any one tried those? Your feedback on BMW and aftermarket sheep skin quality and fit would be most appreciated. TIA, alex f

#6. Roll bars and Red Line Oil and patents - from TFRM3@aol.com
Top
Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 13:04:17 EDT From: TFRM3@aol.com Subject: Roll bars and Red Line Oil and patents From Jay Morris ok guys, real quick: I have bought roll cages for myself from Kirk Racing in Alabama, 205 608 1156 and have been very happy with them. I buy just the pre-bent bars, and weld it myself, so I cannot speak for their welding, but I hear from many non-welder types that it is very high quality. I will point out that I have all the tools and stuff needed to make rollcages within 20 feet of me, and I still order prebent tubing from Kirk. They make a bolt in rollbar for the e36 m3 that is $339, but if you tell the girl who answers the phone that you know me, she'll sell it for under $300. (erw tubing, dom is a bit more) Second, regarding Red Line Oil, and Roy the Chemist in particular. There was some inference that because Roy doesn't have any patents, that he doesn't know what hes's doing. All I can say, (and I mean all I can say) is that the oil that Roy has made for our shocks is light years ahead of every other oil we've tested in terms of resistance to heat, lubricity, etc etc etc. You think to yourself "yeah but compared to what". We have tested every oil that we can get our hands on, worldwide, including several that are not even sold to anybody, just given to top teams ( network TV type teams). Heard a rumor that Amsoil had trick new oil for MX bikes? Bought it. Silkolene has new stuff for Penskes? stole it. etc etc. Bottom line: I like Roy and Tim and I don't care where they used to work because I used to work at a gas station. Third. Patents? I have 2 and I don't think I would ever do it again. I have been ripped by some of the finest "Pacific Rim" companies in the world, and the time and money I spent on patent attornies would have been better spent playing hopscotch on a summer day. Obligatory BMW list of possessions: 4 bmw motors, 2 bmws 3 chevy motors, 2 chevies 2 boat motors (SBC 400) , 1 boat 2 mazda motors, 1 mazda 2 buick motors, 2 buicks (thats more like it) 1 minivan motor, 1 minivan 1 pontiac GTO motor, no pontiac

#7. [Fwd: Status of TC Kline Rollbars] - from Vern Anderson

What he says about the rollbars/cages matches up with what Bob Tunnell told me ealier this week. I've also heard this about the DA Koni's, so I'm going to start saving my pennies now for a set of those. My SA's need to be upgraded... #8. SSR Integrals -- Gluing the Hubcentric Rings with Hi-Temp Adhesive? - from Andrew E. Kalman

Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 11:19:07 -0700 From: "Andrew E. Kalman" <aek@pumpkininc.com> Subject: SSR Integrals -- Gluing the Hubcentric Rings with Hi-Temp Adhesive? Hi All. Has anyone with the older SSR Inegrals (the ones with a green ring for hubcentric mounting and a circlip to hold it in) got tired of dealing with the circlip and simply glued the rings in place? I figure one would need a pretty good high-temp adhesive, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend one ... Thanks, -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. #10. Hooisers on the track for first time - WOW!! (long) - from Vern Anderson
Top
Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 14:52:31 -0400 From: Vern Anderson <vanderson@cerebellumsoft.com> Subject: Hooisers on the track for first time - WOW!! (long) Hello all, I spent the day at Nelson Ledges yesterday and ran Hoosiers for the first time on the track. I usually run Yokohama AO32R's on the track (235/40/17's) and Hoosier A3SO3's for autocross (245/40/17's). I'm done autocrossing my car for the year, so I took both sets of tires out to Nelson to give them a back-to-back test. I was told by several reliable sources that you can safely run the autocross compound Hoosiers on the track if the ambient temps are below 65-70 degrees or so. Yesterday was about 55 degrees tops and I experienced no problems whatsoever with the tires (no abnormal wear, no blistering, etc.), so that appears to be accurate. All I can say about the Hoosiers is - WOW! I always knew that the Yoko's really weren't very sticky, but I never knew the difference would be so great. I am very familiar with the Yoko's at Nelson and can run them pretty consistently at 8-9/10's. I ran two sessions with the Yoko's then threw the Hoosiers on the car. Running the same line and having no first-hand starting point for tire pressures, I was immediately 1.5-2 seconds faster per lap, just running 7-8/10ths. After getting comfortable with them and fiddling with pressures, I was able to get down to a full three seconds faster than the Yoko's. I need to alter my line quite a bit to adjust to the greater grip (earlier turn-ins, earlier throttle and different shifting strategies), but I haven't run them enough to have that finalized yet. The Yoko's have stiffer sidewalls, so the Hoosiers actually felt slightly softer on turn-in, but it was not really a detriment. The Hoosier's were very forgiving, made much less noise at the limit than the Yoko's and seemed to like the tight turns with high-slip angles (13 at Nelson for example). Threshold braking was the biggest seat-of-the-pants difference - the Hoosiers, when hot, provide a radical increase in braking grip over the Hoosiers. Overall, I'm very pleased. Now I'm hooked on Hoosiers, which at the prices and wear rates, is like a bad drug addiction. Looks like I'll have to explain to my wife why I need a multi-thousand $$ tire budget next year :) I have a new set of Hoosier R's that I'm going to run at Mid-Ohio next weekend at the Buckeye BMW school, and I'm also taking the Yoko's there, so I'll be able to compare them at another venue. Just a small comparison report in case anyone is interested. Vern Anderson - independent amateur tire tester 98 M3/2 Hoosier Daddy?
