I think your service manager may be correct as dino oil was the factory fill. Although I thought I recall BMW switching to synthetic in '99 or '00. I promptly drained it out but can't imagine it would cause any problems. Once you switch to synthetic, be sure you change your oil in more frequent interval until you feel most of the regular oil has dissapeared from the oil pan. There are numerous brands of synthetic/dyno oils on the market. If the two were incompatible such products would not have existed. Exactly would problems are you expecting when mixing synthetic and dyno oils? alex f (with originally dyno and at one time or another synthetic oil in all three of my bimmers. Now back to dyno juice for the daily commuter).
