I don't know why it doesn't show on tireracks web page but I can promise you that I have them in hand and will be trying to get them put on this weekend. Call them > up they might have a few sets left. It's listed on Tire Rack's page, at least it was earlier today (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/kumho/ku_ecsta_v700.jsp) There's a limited number of sizes available, but they all seem to be in stock. I hope these new ones balance a lot better than the Victoracers. The place I had mine mounted says that inability to balance is sorta common. I've got two new ones that are BAD, and were recommended to be put on the rear only. If there had been more time (I needed them for this weekend), they would have been sent back and replaced. (FWIW, the shop is Conversion Techniques in Oakland. They cater to racers and have the latest Hunter equipment. If John says he can't balance 'em, they can't be balanced.) Cheers, Jim Bassett - off to Laguna in another couple of hours! 1998 M3/4

#4. Track Tire/Wheel Selection - from Riley, Scott
Top
Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 17:08:09 -0500 From: "Riley, Scott" <SRiley@CardinalCapital.com> Subject: Track Tire/Wheel Selection Fellow enthusiasts and racers, I am in the process of building a '95 M3 (I-Stock) for the 2002 rookie season and wanted to get some opinions/feedback from "those who know." A fellow Club Racer (J-Prepared) is planning to upgrade his 17" wheels to 18" wheels in order to have a much bigger selection of wheels that will clear his E30 M3's Porsche brakes. He currently runs 245/40-17s and will be upgrading to 245/35-18s. After doing some research on these two sizes, I noticed that they are very similar in overall dimensions (see below): Current (245/40-17) Upgrade (245/35-18) Sidewall: 3.9 in. 3.4 in. Radius: 12.4 in. 12.4 in. Diameter: 24.7 in. 24.8 in. Circumference: 77.6 in. 77.8 in. Revs/mile: 816.0 815.0 Virtually identical except for the 1/2" sidewall difference (top and bottom, of course) to compensate for the 1" larger wheel. At this point, my mind has been racing (maybe a little pun intended) about doing the same thing to my '95 M3. To this point, I have come up with the following pros and cons (see below): Pros: Greater wheel selection (BBS RC/RK and maybe more) Greater rotor clearance for future I-Prepared brake upgrade Shorter sidewall for marginally less flex Increased wheel vs. tire ratio for marginally better brake cooling (at least in theory...) Looks good--->Feels good--->Drives Good (sorry for the grammar) Cons: Tires slightly more expensive (Hoosiers $231 vs. $200) Wheels slightly more expensive Slightly increased unsprung weight (1-2# if any) Possible less forgiveness with the shorter sidewall Here is a summary of the wheel and tire specifications: 17"x8.5" Cost 18"x8.5" Cost Fikse (ET 37.7) 18 lbs. $599 21 lbs. $799 SSR Comps (ET 46) 17 lbs. $389 ?? lbs. $??? BBS RC (ET 38) N/A 18 lbs. $439 BBS RK (ET 38) N/A 19 lbs. $329 245/40-17 Cost 245/35-18 Cost Hoosier (R3S03) 18 lbs. $200 17 lbs. $231 Honestly, after reviewing the information above, I am undecided in my dilemma. My first priority is to choose the combination that will perform the best without being overly (ok, maybe a little) concerned about price. Unless, there is an overwhelming reason to go with the Fikses, it appears that any combination of the other wheels will be "affordable". Another wheel that has piqued my interest after seeing multiple racers (Stickley, McMillin, Dominic, et al) use them are the Forgeline wheels. But, my initial understanding is that the 17x9 Forgelines do NOT fit an E36 M3 all around with 245/40s in Stock class due to non-C/O and limited negative camber, not to mention whether they are legal. I think the majority would agree that the 17x9 setup would be optimal (as Pontiac says: wider is better), but then again, most of the CRs I know use the 17x8.5 setup with SSR Comps...there must be a reason. Excluding the Fikses and Forgelines, the obvious choice for a 17" and 18" setup would be the SSR Comps and BBS RCs, respectively. This would result in identical tire and wheel combined weights, 35 lbs. each. Or I could go with the 18" RKs and add a 1 lb., but save $110 per wheel (that's a lotta cheeseburgers)! I would like to hear everyone's opinion as to the direction I am heading with my research, good or bad. The last thing I want is to regret a multi-thousand dollar tire/wheel purchase halfway through the season. Thanks everyone, Scott Riley '99 M3 Garage Queen '95 M3 Track King

#9. Help!!! '95 M3 tranny and clutch - from NickG
Top
Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 23:13:41 -0400 From: "NickG" <nikog@MediaOne.net> Subject: Help!!! '95 M3 tranny and clutch I want to apologize in advance for all the cross posts, but I'm really in a bind and wanted to cover as many bases as possible....... The car in question is a 1995 M3 with a 5-speed. I started taking down the tranny tonight in order to replace the clutch this weekend. I removed all of the bolts attaching the tranny to the block, and the damn thing won't come off. Yes, I got all the bolts from the top removed (the starter has been pulled forward). I can separate the top of the tranny about 1/4" away from the block, and the bottom will come back 1/2" from the block. But the darn thing just won't come off!! I'm afraid that either the input shaft is frozen onto the either the pilot bearing or the clutch disc. With the tranny clear of both dowel pins, it won't even rotate on the input shaft. Does anybody have any experience with this sort of problem? Any advice to give? Second problem....I'm installing a Sachs HD 'Sport' pressure plate. In comparing it with an old stock M3 pressure plate, the fingers/springs on the new pressure plate are lower, ie, a longer throwout bearing is required to keep the stock release point. Does anybody have a part number for such a bearing? Thanks, Nick (tired and pissed off)
