#4. [E36M3] 'grease' balls in coolant? more info - from Mdriver13@aol.com

This stuff sure doesn't look like oil. These are small pea size grease balls (really thick stuff). Really sticky, they readily adhered to my screwdriver. I pulled out about four of these balls, a few smaller ones are still floating around. Only thing I ever add to this system is DI water, BMW coolant, and water wetter. System flushed at the Dealer about two years ago, even gave them the DI water to use. Just pulled out some coolant, it looks clean, except the tube had some grease on it. It appears that even the baffle inside the reservoir has some grease coating it. Car runs strong as ever and temp gauge looks normal. This is when I wish BMW would have installed a real oil temp gauge :-( Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion 1997 & 2000 BSP Champion 2001

I haven't really put my M3 on a track much, but there *was* an autocross school that a friend invited me to once where you got lots of runs throughout the day. You got far more than the normal three times runs plus a few fun runs. I must've gone on the course a dozen times! When I arrived that day, I was wearing four MXX3s with a good amount of tread left. After a full day of ear-to-ear grins, imagine my surprise when I went to see if the tires were hot, and found them practically down to the wear bars! I thought the school was a bargain until I realized I blew through several hundred dollars in tire tread. :) Another interesting anecdote: two of the best instructors there were a husband/wife pair, who brought their own trailered race-prepped Porsche 911, which they ran through the course now and again. The wife took me out in my car to show me how to drive the track. In the process, she set the raw FTD which no one was able to break. I overheard her later talking to another instructor saying, "That car is amazing - I'd go into a corner hot, and the damn car would just *turn*!" My car made me happy, even though I sucked. :) - Chris

This year I went with very worn Pirellis and I went home with mostly treadless pieces of rubber that weren't fit for driving _at all_. It wasn't just the wearing down of the rubber, but the ripped-out tread blocks that rendered the tires useless. - peterg (bought my first set of R-compounds _specifically_ to not kill my street rubber)

#7. Oil Question - from Paul Elliott

Clearly, you cant rely on the dealer for solid information..Only those who believe in pie in the sky would truely believe that the dealer is the best source of truthful information. I know of a dealer who recently told an E46 shopper that if he waits til the '02 M3s, he'll find they have 370 HP. The rotary jobs are best at removing moderate to serious paint flaws, as they produce enough heat and cutting action to wear through the surface defect. It works well, but you hve to be very careful to not burn through the paint. I've actually had good luck at removing, not simply camoflaging, light clear coat scratching, but hand rubbing a product called 3M Moderate Strength Cleaner wax...Its the moderate strength labeled stuff you have to use....If you take a rubber sanders block, and stretch a lengh of cotton toweling across, and then apply some of the product, and rub back and forth just over the scratch, applying weight, you will find that in a few strokes, the scratch is gone....And I dont mean covered up...Its plain gone....Try it...Its alot better than having them reappear after a few washes, isnt it?! --------------------------------------------------------- Paul Elliott '99 White M3; < 35K miles; Dinan stage II sc kit; Rotex pads;X-Brace; Stygar SS and Clutch Stop; Sound by Polk, Excelon, JLAudio

I purchased these for use with my Motorsport brace and K-Mac camber plates, but they will not fit the camber plates. Had to kludge another option. They were purchased from Bekkers. They came to me rusted, supposedly an issue with all of the factory cap nuts, so I zinc-plated them and painted them black. Paid $80 for the set of 6, asking $45 (includes shipping).
