I live in Pennsylvania, where the temperature will be going below freezing and my 95 M3 will get driven in the snow. I saw some references of people driving thinner-weight oils than I would have guessed, and the BMW manual specifies some pretty thick oil weights. What oils do you guys run in sub-freezing temperatures, when you're running *synthetic*? I'm assuming that the fact that I use synthetic will give me a greater freedom in oil weight selection due to the fact that its viscosity varies less with temperature, no? I run Mobil 1 5W30 in my other car and it loves it. I'd love to run this in the M3, but it seems too thin compared to what the manual recommends... - Chris

Chris, I use Mobil 1 in the winter (10W30), from November to March, and then Mobil 1 (15W50) during autox season (Apr - Oct). Car just cranks over easier on cold PA mornings with the lighter weight stuff. Which means that oil should be getting to your engines 'vital organs' faster...that's the critical factor in my opinion. Had a coworker who worked for Cummings in engine R&D, who said almost all motor wear occurs during the first few seconds after startup. Always keep that in mind. He also said their Mobil 1 wear testing gave incredible results. So, use the right viscosity oil for the temperature/driving conditions AND never rev your engine immediately upon startup. Ouch...that hurts just thinking about it. Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion 1997 & 2000 BSP Champion 2001

I am buying a harness bar for my M3 and want to install a Simpson 5-pt harness I had on my race car (now sold). Are there some brackets that can be used to mount the two lap belts to the factory locations? I don't think I will initally install the submarine belt but at some point in the future I will. Thanks! Date: Sun, 28 Oct 2001 13:43:48 EST From: SWKAUF@aol.com Subject: 17 X 8.5 all around on 98 M3 I know this has been discussed before, but I have an extra set of stock 10 spoke staggered wheels and am considering using the 8.5 wheels all around for summer tires and using 7.5 all around for winter tires. Will I run into any clearance problem in front with this? No mods have been done to this car. My other option is to sell the extra set of wheels. Thanks Steve
