And from contacting BMW NA. Also, it is a requirment that cars with synthetic factory fill must have the sticker underhood...Most dealers will at least tell you this. Despite the fact that I said dealers should generally not be used as the be all and end all of truth regarding our cars, they are at least occasionally familiar with such practices. --------------------------------------------------------- Paul Elliott '99 White M3; < 35K miles; Dinan stage II sc kit; Rotex pads;X-Brace; Stygar SS and Clutch Stop; Sound by Polk, Excelon, JLAudio ----- Original Message ----- From: "russell" <driver8m3@yahoo.com> To: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> Cc: "E36M3" <e36m3@bmw-m.net> Sent: Saturday, October 27, 2001 11:33 PM Subject: Re: Oil Question > ok...since i'm playing the part of the doubting one, how do you KNOW this > to be true? > > russell > > --- Paul Elliott <pelliott@rcn.com> wrote: > > Russel, > > > > >>are you saying that bmw switched the factory fill oil sometime in the > > middle of '99 run? i doubt thats true. << > > > > Doubt away, oh doubting Russel, but the fact is that a few of the last > > E36M3s produced during teh last months found their way onto the E46 > > lines, > > and were so factory filled with the long life stuff....Those that got it > > had > > the yellow Synethetic sticker in the engine compartment...If you dont > > have > > the sticker, you dont have the synthetic..Its that simple. > > > > >>now, if it is indeed true that some had synthetic and some had dino as > > factory fill, i'm sure the dealers would know this also<< > > > > I think if you reverse that which youre sure of and that which you > > doubt, > > you'll be better off. #3. Advice for 5-Point harness Install - from Peter Guagenti

Date: Sun, 28 Oct 2001 14:52:51 -0800 From: Peter Guagenti <peter@guagenti.com> Subject: Advice for 5-Point harness Install I'm installing a pair of Simpson Cam-Lock 5-point Harnesses in my '95, and I'm looking for advice. I got a deal on a pair of harnesses with the lap belts that latch on to eye bolts as opposed to regular mounting plates, and I'm unsure how I should hook it up. I don't want to drill a hole in the floorpan unless I have to. I tried finding M10 eye bolts so I can replace the rear seat mounting bolts, but I have been unable to find someone who has them. Any advice? Anyone with a similar set-up that can share how they did it? Thanks, -peterg

Maybe the problem is something wierd. Could the water pump be leaking grease from its bearing (does it have grease up there?) Matt, Oil on dipstick looks, smells and feels right. Amount is right too. After driving it awhile yesterday, no new grease balls to report. I thought the water pump bearing was lubed by the coolant, so I wouldn't suspect grease from that. Maybe, it is a weird occurrence, there from manufacturing and worked it way loose after four years??? Stopping by the Dealer on Wednesday anyway, I'll show them the 'greasy' paper towel. I run Castrol Syntec 5W50 and don't have to worry about changing weights every season. Is there something superior about Mobil 1 I should know about? BTW, the syntec site & info are at http://www.castrolusa.com/products/productpage1.asp?product_id=4&product _category=1 They specifically say it's ok to switch back and forth between Syntec and dino oils. When did you allow for adaptation? In your 1995 OBD-I engine, adaptive information is stored in battery backed SRAM. When you unplug the DME to swap chips all adaptive factors are set to "nominal". It will probably take at least 2-8 hours of driving time to even approach to where your ECU should be before you start to run tests like this. - Skip Robert Liu wrote: > > Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 04:57:38 -0700 (PDT) > From: Robert Liu <bob_a_liu@yahoo.com> > Subject: [E36M3] JC Intake / Euro HFM Questions > > Last night, me and a couple buddies installed a JC > intake, euro HFM, and chip into my 95 M3, 155k miles, > stock except for a flowmaster exhaust. Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 19:04:24 -0400 From: Skip Bogard <skip.bogard@alumni.duke.edu> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Leather Deep Cleaning??? I would get the 400 mL can of foam cleaner here: http://www.stainsafe.com/ssafe/product.asp?dept%5Fid=403&sku=920%2E022%2E001 I have used this Strong Foam Cleaner on my '95 light gray leather with great success. I believe from memory that I read on the can the active ingredient is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate... the same stuff in some hair shampoo. However this stuff is much stronger than hair shampoo. It will lift old aniline dye from dried out leather. Your passenger seat is probably not dried out though and should do fine (unless you never garage the car and you live in Arizona.) The foam cleaner did lift dye off the very tip of my center armrest, which gets a lot of sun & temperature extremes). To correct this, I used the "LeatherMaster SunSafe <Dye> Kit". That kit also includes a cleaner (to clean & prep before dying) but it is not near as strong. Dozens of M3's with gray leather have used these products with great success. Just be aware that I don't think the "Soft Cleaner" is going to cut it for you. (http://www.stainsafe.com/ssafe/product.asp?dept_id=402&sku=920.066.001) It's not really strong enough to lift much except soil and light grease. So, again, I'd go with the foam. If you want to shop the array of product choices, try starting here: http://www.stainsafe.com/ssafe/dept.asp?dept%5Fid=403 You cannot wait much more than 72 hours to start working on a stain before you'll have permanent or semi-permanent staining. So don't procrastinate on this. Oh, and they take forever to ship product, so I'd scream sorta loud to get it rushed. - Skip Chris Salter wrote: > > Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 11:41:50 -0700 (PDT) > From: Chris Salter <errsomeone@yahoo.com> > Subject: Leather Deep Cleaning??? > > All, > What products clean leather well?
