CTC Analytical Services is right near where I work and live. I will have to try them. I had planned on doing this similar to you, once a year or so to spot trends. Is this the only service you have used and why did you happen to go with them since you are in Boston obviously? I see it looks like you used a subcontractor but I just called CTC and they deal with the public directly and charge $18.40 per test or sell prepackaged ten packs for $150 ($15 each). It'll tell I highly recommend these. When I had a head gasket go on my old car (E34 535i), I sampled the oil and sent it off for analysis. Luckily, the damage was one way (oil into coolant only). But, seeing all the stuff they check for is pretty neat. Here's what one report looks like, from AV Lubricants in Ohio: http://www.boston-bmwcca.org/bimmer/2001/07/images/head-anal-800.jpg I did this in the spring when I got my current car, and plan to do them once per year, to try to spot any trends before they might become problems. I've wasted a lot more than $20 on much less useful things! Until next time... Todd tmerrill@mathworks.com 1998 BMW M3 coupe BMW CCA member, Boston Chapter ---

Water Wetter is really designed to be used sans coolant... in other words, it's best to use it (from a cooling standpoint) with JUST water. Coolant/antifreeze is really just designed to keep your radiator fluid from freezing. -kit, who needs to change his coolant... -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ .

#5. [E36M3] Underbody Shroud Reinforcement - from RogRacer@aol.com

Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 15:26:52 EST From: RogRacer@aol.com Subject: [E36M3] Underbody Shroud Reinforcement As a small (maybe insignificant) tip as partial payback for those who have answered my questions in the past, I offer the following tip. When replacing my thermostat recently I notice that my underbody shroud was about to tear off...like has happened to so many M3s. Three of the 4 attachment areas had broken free. Instead of replacing the shroud, though, I simply reinforced the mounting tab areas with several plys of fiberglass fabric and polyester resin and re-drilled the mounting holes. Should be as strong or stronger than the original. Anyway, if you happen to have your shroud off, you might consider reinforcing it in this manner before in tears off. Pretty simple and cheap. I've been running this configuration for over 2 years and 3 different tires (Pilot Sports, AVS Sports, SO-3). The most you'll get is a bit of "polishing" on the strut tube from the rim protector of the tire (some bulge out more than others). You can check this yourself by rotating the current staggered set F<->R and going for a short drive (and I mean short, you will have *goobs* of oversteer, so BE CAREFUL). I performed this exact test prior to purchasing 8.5's for the front. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - retired from track as of yesterday very-soon-to-be 1993 325is #44 KP

Rule of thumb with flood cars, turn and run as fast as you can. I would guess that they bought it at an auction for about 30-50k tops. Maybe more if it was running at the auction. The value of it would be what is the motor worth and sheet metal to fix another one. In a modern car, most of the electronics will be affected and alot of the interior sheet metal used for dash support, seat frames, etc will have already started rusting. In a Z8, I have no idea how much of it is aluminum on those types of parts, since the body is. When New Orleans flooded back in 95 or 96?, I went to the insurance auction and they were not taking bids on the cars, They were just half of what the window sticker had on it. There must have been atleast 50-70 new BMWs out there. There were 4 of the 540i sports that I wanted so bad. We get there and walk in, each car had the seats and some had the carpets out of them sitting on the ground next to the car drying out. When I looked inside the cars, you could actually see surface rust on the dash supports. Scary. Everyone was bought that day and loaded on transport being sent out west. Think one company bought all of them. And I am sure they were sold without any mention of the flooding they were in. Kit, Yes in deed! Matter of fact, just added more Water Wetter on Saturday when I noticed the grease balls in the coolant (only use BMW coolant). Great, guess I'll be changing the coolant soon, though a little grease in there shouldn't hurt anything, right???? Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion 1997 & 2000 BSP Champion 2001

I've gotten in all of my cars from mild to wild that I've used water wetter in and never had a problem. It only appears in the overflow tank and not in the radiator or other places, evidenced during various r & r of parts... ;) (used in 91 nx2000, 99 miata, 97 eclipse gsx, 2000 S2000...) -kit -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ .
