I am was running 245/45 Kumho's V700's, and they are probably a lot wider than a 245/40 street tire. I have both 5mm and 10mm spacers. With the 5mm, the tire clears the strut by a smidge, so it would rub for autocross, so I use the 10mm spacers if I run the stock 8.5" wheels in front. Also, some aftermarket wheels have less backspacing than stock, so they would have more room than a stock wheel. It seems you don't need a flood to start rusting the interior metal these days. The tubing and metal supporting the dash on my car were already actively rusting when the car was brand new. My dealer asked BMW about this and was told this was normal. I think a flood would merely add some sediment to the rust. :( On that topic, does the 6-year rust warranty cover all the painted surfaces of the car? One of my shock towers is rusting because of a poorly routed cable. -John '96 318is -- john.firestone@nord-com.net

I can tell you this is because the material used on the Steering Hanger Beam (Honda's term) is not galvaneal so it basically has no rust protection other than processing oils that may have been used during the stamping of the individual plain steel components before they were welded together. So yes, that is normal. The Steering Hanger Beam is not exposed enough for the rust to grow beyond just surface rust and since it's not normally visible, until you start taking trim pieces off, using galvaneal would be wasted money. In the case of the Z8, most of the car is aluminum, perhaps even the hanger beam. Scott, I'd previously posted about the Kumhos I put on my car a couple of months ago. To recap, they're comfortable and quiet, very noticeably more so on both counts than the Bridgestone S-02 tires they replaced. However I also think the B'stones became noisier as they wore down, so maybe these will too. The Kumho's dry grip is very good and they don't squeal. Turn-in is a bit less sharp than the B'stones, but is still good. Since then I've also had the chance to evaluate wet handling, including a trip back from Grattan Raceway a couple of weeks ago that included gully-washing rainstorms on the Interstate. The Kumhos performed very well indeed, with no hairy moments, even going through standing water at speeds I'd better not discuss. However remember we're talking brand new full tread tires vs. my recollection of fairly worn B'stones. Going back to dry grip, in general I think it's very difficult to compare tires without doing some kind of systematic back-to-back testing (which is why I also pay attention to the Tire Rack tests). Maybe if there's one particular on-ramp you take every day then you can build up a feel for the differences between tires, but even then only if those differences aren't too subtle. I don't think that we can detect say a 5% change without timing. That said, I think the Kumhos fall well within my 5% can't-tell-the-difference window. Sounds as if they'd be perfect for your needs, with the added benefit of being the cheapest of those you list. I paid $527 including 5% sales tax for the set of 4 at my local Discount Tire, mounted and balanced. Neil 96 M3

#7. Boston Area Body Shop - from Dahlstrand, Kurt

A cab backed into the right-front of my car last weekend and it looks like I'm going to need some paint work on the fender and possibly a new front spoiler. The car was originally purchased from Foreign Motors West in Natick, MA. I have only had the car for about 4 months so I have had very little experience dealing with them, but I've heard they have an excellent service department so I figured they would probably be a good bet. Anyone have any experience with them or other any other body shop in the area? Thanks! Kurt Dahlstrand '97 M3/4

Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 10:29:13 -0500 From: Colin_S_Whelan@rrfc.raytheon.com Subject: [E36M3] Recommended Oils Hi everyone, I've noticed a bit of oil consumption (3/4 qt in 2500 miles) using Mobil 1 10W-30 synthetic over the past 4 months. The car has only 37K miles and has been to 4 autocrosses, with temperatures averaging about 70-80F during the past 2500 miles. I'd imagine I could reduce this a bit by using Mobil 1 15W-40 but it seems impossible to find. Most of the retail stores carry Mobil 1 15W-50, but I don't know if this is too thick, especially since we'll be approaching winter soon in Boston. How about Mobil Delvac, which I think can be found in 15W-40, but is this synthetic? I was wondering if you guys had any recommendations. Thanks, Colin '98 M3 (JC intake+software, X-brace, Euro rotors..)
