#1. HVAC lights - from Chip Mitchell

Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 19:57:47 -0500 From: "Chip Mitchell" <chipm@arches.uga.edu> Subject: HVAC lights The controls are lit by two bulbs with glass optics connecting them to the switches. Pull off all of the knobs, remove the two screws (I think its two - they're pretty obvious) and just pull the cover off. The bulbs pull right out, and I remember paying about $1.50 or so at the dealer. #2. Laguna Seca noise limits update - from Marc.S.Edwards@QuestDiagnostics.com

Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 17:25:26 -0800 From: Marc.S.Edwards@QuestDiagnostics.com Subject: Laguna Seca noise limits update I wanted to follow up on a question that I posed to the list back about 6 months ago about the noise limits at Laguna Seca and my car modifications. I attended a great event hosted by the GGC BMW CCA at LS. I was in the Saturday and Sunday group (a different set of students did a Friday only day). Partly cloudy and in the upper 60s the whole weekend. Great track, great group of drivers and very fast too. There were at least 6-7 E46M3s there, several amongst the instructors and the rest amongst students in all 4 run groups. The usual swarm of E36M3s, E30M3s, a contingent of E39M5s and lots of other nice machinery. The noise limit for the weekend was 92 dB. The noise booth is a small tan booth at the exit of turn 5, drivers' right, approximately 50-75 feet away from the edge of the track. My car's configuration received no warnings at any time (cool temps and other atmospheric conditions can change the sound pressure level dB). I was able to press the accelerator flat to the floor in 3d gear on the right edge of the track as I went uphill to turn 6 the whole day. Configuration: Hood without insulation (stock M3 LTW hood). Jim C cold air intake system with Euro HFM. Supersprint cat-back exhaust with straight tips. Met a few list members there which is always nice to put faces and people to names I have seen for years on this list. Hope you all had a safe trip home. Thanks, Marc Edwards 1995 M3 CSL

#4. [E36M3] OBC Temperature Display Malfunction - from Colin_S_Whelan@rrfc.raytheon.com

Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 20:52:11 -0500 From: Colin_S_Whelan@rrfc.raytheon.com Subject: [E36M3] OBC Temperature Display Malfunction My OBC outside temperature display seems to be stuck at 49F for days now, regardless of the outside temperature. I disconnected the sensor (part # 1 383 204) from the driver's side brake duct and the temperature reading quickly fell to -35F. Upon reconnecting it, it slowly returned to about 45F after a couple of hours. The wires and plug seem to be in perfect condition. I measured the resistance at ~65F and it read 4.0k Ohms and at ~100F it read ~3.6k Ohms and responded quite quickly. This response seems to be about right, but does anyone know what the resistances should be? I wondering if I should go ahead and replace it (cost?), or else I'll be heading to the dealer after waiting for an appointment for a while... Thanks for the help! Colin '98 M3

#6. RE: [E36M3] Laguna Seca noise limits update - from Mel Silva

Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 20:12:31 -0600 From: "Mel Silva" <melsilva@mindspring.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Laguna Seca noise limits update Yes, I live in Texas, but I still consider Laguna to be my "home" track. It IS where I learned to drive. One of the key components for your 92dB limit, is the coastal fog. The fog seems to concentrate the pressure waves of the sound near the ground and it makes a squeaky wheeled tricycle "seem" to put out 92dB. Some times it is just ridiculous. I have run there on weekends where the test booth was running trackside and everyone was less than 92dB and the residents in the next county were calling the dept of public works complaining about the noise from the track. Of course we did have a 4 cam Ferrari out on track that admitted to only going part throttle out of turn 5... Ah, those were the days... #7. [E36M3] 'grease' balls in coolant? final story - from Mdriver13@aol.com
Top
Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 21:17:38 EST From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: [E36M3] 'grease' balls in coolant? final story To all, If you use Redline Water Wetter you will see small grease balls floating in the coolant overflow tank and maybe even some grease sludge on the sides of the plastic tank. This happens because of some reaction with the BMW coolant (maybe all coolants) at high temperature over time. The exact reaction I do not know. I might contact Redline and ask them. The Dealer did not think this would cause a cooling problem. But I do wonder if the grease that precipitated out would cause the coolant to lose some of its lubricating properties...which would be bad for the water pump bearing? Hope this helps other users of Water Wetter. Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion 1997 & 2000 BSP Champion 2001

Are they compatable to E36 with cruise control? The bar is completely compatible with the traction control unit found on MY '96 - '99. If you have the x-brace underneath and the JTD brace on top you just can't get any stiffer. Jim's site use to show the brace when he made them about two years ago. I'm sure someone wouldn't mind pointing to a URL that shows it off. I ordered a new set of trailing arm bushings from them, which should arrive tomorrow. They have gotten good reviews, and use a 'purple' compound, which is supposed to have a stiffness b/t the more common 'red' poly bushings and OEM rubber, w/o the tendency to dry out and squeak like the red bushings. The foregoing is based on reputation, not personal experience. However, my t/a bushings should be installed later this week or next at the latest. #10. wanted: track tires - from Mike Frank

Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 21:30:14 -0500 From: "Mike Frank" <mfrank28@home.com> Subject: wanted: track tires I know this is a long shot, but if anyone in or near Indianapolis has any used R compound tires that they are looking to get rid of/sell, I'm interested. R1s, G-Force R1s, Hoosiers, Yokos, Kumhos - just about anything, in any size that will fit an E36 M3 (8"rim), with some rubber left, even if it's only one. A last minute decision to instruct at IRP this weekend has got me scrambling for parts. Not interested in buying a whole new set for the last weekend of the year. Thanks, Mike Frank 97 M3
